2013 NCAA Football Thread

alabama-auburn was probably the best game i've ever seen

Well if I had to stay within the vicinity of Scott Stadium. Of course it is the best football game I would see all year too .

It was crap kicking. Other than that, Alabama played their usual game and just got beat.

the way it worked out as the achilles heel of an otherwise invincible football playing machine made it more dramatic
This just kills me. I mean, c'mon, the kicker dropped all those passes? Busted coverages? Jumped offsides? Went 5-15 on 3rd & 4th? Neither of them were even on the field for most of that . . .

Anyway, on to the countdown. Since we're nearing the end of the regular season with mostly just conference title games to play, I'm making the list a little less impressionistic than usual and closer to an actual ranking. I still have one more chance to actually get it right next week.

Is this week's list colored by grief and bitterness? I don't know, maybe. I mean, we're all human. None of us is perfect, right :mischief:

1. FSU -- Sigh. I'd like to see a more tested team atop the rankings at the close of the season, but the more a team gets tested the more likely it is to lose. And FSU has played consistently impressive football all year, with the possible exception of that game at Boston College. . .
2. Ohio State -- A lot of these games have been real squeakers, but twenty-four wins is twenty-four wins . . .
3. Auburn -- Would Ohio State be undefeated if they played Auburn's schedule? Probably not. But with the system we use, there's no way to exclude an undefeated AQ team in favor of a one-loss team. It just wouldn't make any sense . . .
4. Alabama -- I still think we're better than they are, but they won the game :gripe:
5. Missouri -- I still don't really believe in them. Now watch them go out and just crush Auburn :(
6. Okie State -- Off week before Bedlam. Would they be ahead of Ohio State if they hadn't lost at WVU . . ?
7. Baylor -- Wow. Drop one game and suddenly all the polish is off. Really struggled vs. TCU today, but if they beat Texas they can still back-door their way into a BCS bowl . . .
8. Oklahoma -- Are they the best two-loss team? Probably not. But it's not their fault they play their biggest rival in mid-October while everyone else waits until the end of the season to stink it up . . .
9.Michigan State -- I want to put them higher, but I'm suspicious of their ability to put up points against a quality defense . . .
10. Arizona State -- Okay, I'm calling this one early because the Arizona game isn't really over yet, but I'm putting ASU here because they should really just have the one loss anyway . . .
11. Stanford -- Probably better than Arizona State, but it took until today vs. fellow one-conference-win Colorado for Utah to get a non-Stanford Pac-12 win. In other words, Stanford has a bad loss . . .
12. Oregon -- Below Stanford because they lost to Stanford . . .
13. SCAR -- I don't think they're this good, it's more that everyone else is just worse . . .
14. Clemson -- Not as good as we thought they were? Or just not good vs. Spurrier . . ?
15. NIU -- All they've got to do is beat Bowling Green and they're pretty much guaranteed a return trip to the BCS . . .
16. UCF -- Really much less impressed with these guys than I was midseason . . .
17. Louisville -- Off. Cincinnati Thursday . . .
18. Cincinnati -- Wouldn't shock me if they beat Louisville . . .
19. Duke -- Would shock me if they score twenty on FSU . . .
20. Fresno State -- Finally dropped out of the ranks of the undefeated. What losers. Oh, wait . . .
21. Ball State -- Somebody has to be down here . . .

Games of the week for week 15:

It's week 15. They're pretty much all games of the week, right? Anyway . . .

Louisville/Cincinnati on Thursday: Cincinnati still has a chance to win the AAC. Theoretically . . .
BG/NIU on Friday: MAC title. NIU's big chance to blow their BCS bowl bid . . .
Okie/Okie State: This and Texas/Baylor will decide the Big XII . . .
UCF/SMU: With the way UCF is playing, may as well tune in . . .
Missouri/Auburn: Missouri/Auburn. Missouri/Alabama. Missouri/Auburn. Missouri/Alabama. Doesn't Missouri/Alabama just sound so much better . . ?
Duke/FSU: Well, no . . .
Ohio State/Michigan State: Should be fun . . .

I so don't want to do resumes right now. Sigh . . :

A lot of Ohio State's wins have been squeakers?? Ohio State has won every single game this season by double digits except Wisconsin (where they led by 2 scores for most of the game and let Wisconsin get a back door cover) and Michigan. I think they have trailed for a grand total of less than five combined minutes in the forth quarter over the entire season. Their average margin of victory this year is over 27 points.

Yeldon was running great all game. The defense had stretches of great play. Cooper caught a 99 yard pass that should have completely broken Auburn. Alabama had a 21 point 2nd quarter.

These are the kind of things that normally wins the game. It's not like McCarron had to throw for 400 yards in some kind of crazy shootout. They blew it on three deep trips into Auburn territory in the 4th quarter, Yeldon was stuffed on a short 4th conversion, and Saban for all his greatness made a Popovich-esque mistake at the end. Alabama played the typical game they like to play and lost.

Much as it pains me to say, isn't Ohio's schedule a wee bit more impressive than FSU's?

And yeah, you can't really just pull out the "bad football game!" card every time your team of choice loses.

Wait, you can return a non-blocked FG for a touchdown? I thought a missed FG was dead.
Yes. This works in the NFL too unless they've changed it . . .
A lot of Ohio State's wins have been squeakers??
I was talking about the impressiveness of the entire streak. Note how I said 24 games is 24 games, not 12 games is 12 games. It was actually a compliment . . .
Alabama played the typical game they like to play and lost.
I'm gonna say I'm marginally more familiar with the way we play than you are. We played like crap. Now if you're pointing out that we've played like crap in other games this year, you are correct. But VaTech and Miss State and UT-Chattanooga didn't have what it took to take advantage while Auburn did. It doesn't change the fact that we played like crap . . .
Much as it pains me to say, isn't Ohio's schedule a wee bit more impressive than FSU's?
It's debatable, but either way FSU has played more impressively . . .
And yeah, you can't really just pull out the "bad football game!" card every time your team of choice loses.
Why not? I pull it out all the time when we win. The only really good games we played this year were Arkansas and LSU.

But don't get me wrong. Everyone else plays like crap far more frequently than we do. If we had won and I was an Auburn fan, I'd be pointing out that the reason Auburn lost was because Marshall couldn't take advantage of wide open receivers and Malzahn made a boneheaded call going for it on 4th from his own 35 down by seven with almost ten minutes still to play. I just have high standards :dunno:

In the most extraordinarily unusual way. I love the reaction videos that ESPN was playing afterwards.

Here's one of the ones they showed and others they didn't.

Many of the Bama reactions cannot be posted for obvious reasons...

Here's one strength of schedule ranking that has FSU at 42 and OSU at 52.

Here's another that has FSU at 65 and OSU at 68.

Either one should make them ineligible for a national championship title.

Well, even FSU had the BC game. I don't know that anyone ever plays well every week. It's almost like you need the poor performances to give you some motivation and coachable moments . . .

Okay, conference races are pretty much done:

AAC

UCF -- Three ways to win! Beat SMU or Cincinnati loses to Louisville OR lose to SMU, Cincinnati beats Louisville and still finishes lower in the final BCS . . .
Cincinnati -- Beat Louisville, hope UCF loses to SMU and drops below you in final BCS . . .

ACC

Florida State/Duke

Big XII

Oklahoma State -- Beat Oklahoma
Texas and Baylor -- Win and hope Okie State loses. Bedlam kicks off three and a half hours before Baylor/Texas, so they should know if they have a chance by kickoff . . .

Big Ten

Michigan State/Ohio State

CUSA

Marshall/Rice -- game site to be determined by BCS standings . . .

MAC

BG/NIU

MWC

Utah State/Fresno State

Pac-12

Stanford/ASU

SEC

Missouri/Auburn

Sunbelt

La-Lafayette . . .

FWIW, Sagarin has OSU's strength of schedule at 61 and FSU at 66.

No matter what though, if OSU beats Michigan State, every single mathematical evaluation of schedule strength will have Ohio State's higher than Florida State.

Wow, that was beautiful. Almost teared up a few times :salute:

I'm pretty sure the Alabama players thought the same.
It's live in the NFL and NCAA. Missed FGs are only dead in high school games.
I would have liked to see Cam Newton's reaction to that play.
His first comment in the presser after today's Panthers game was "I wanna start out by saying War Eagle." And then he kept making references to it during later questions.

I think we can safely say that was the best football Saturday in years. The Game would have been tops everywhere if it hadn't for that wild finish to Alabama-Auburn.

If both teams win their conference championship games, their SOS rankings in the relevant BCS computers will both be in the 50s, which actually makes them above average schedules compared to all of college football. Hypothetically speaking, where would your schedule cutoff be? Teams must play a schedule in the top 25% of the sport in order to be considered for a title? 15%? 30%? Curious to where the line us.

How about this? Let's make an exception and give the Heisman to Gus Malzahn instead of a football player.

JK

Who is your Heisman favorite?
