Greetings,

The entertaining movie from CivAnon (much better quality than the coarse copy at GameSpot) very clearly shows units consisting of four men, meaning four hitpoints. In the movie, the group on the right also has four men showing when the camera zooms out.

This again confirms in an officially released trailer (albeit on the CivAnon site) that it is possible to have larger groups.

Could well be, Mitsho. So far, in various other threads that tried to digest information from the E3 movies, I understood that there was unclarity about the upgrades possible and whether there could be more than 3 persons in a unit. I hadn't heard that upgrades to veteran were possible. At least now we know for sure that more than 3 is possible.

man, i just love the idea of promotions and specialists, rather then boring conscript, regular, veteran, elite...this way you actually see the difference

I think Soren said you could upgrade strength in general, or add special attributes instead.

That is a fake site, just for laughs. I like the third one…

“You liar you played all night”
“You know how I get with the industrial era”
“Then find an industrial type”
“I love you”

It's great! :)

It may be for laughs, it's a site created by Firaxis to humour people and get them interested about Civ4. It uses high quality screen shots from the game and there are naturally the videos that were also produced by Firaxis.

Anyway, this thread isn't about the site as such, so let's keep it at that. But I did notice that in the screenshot section (disguised as blog) they also have a number of photos showing units consisting of five people, meaning you can get units with 3-5 hitpoints at least.

So if they win many battles, the men in the unit reproduce? Freaky :D

Maybe a dude from the nearest friendly city comes running to join a victorious group?

Nah, but seeing how killed members fade out, I guess new "upgrade members" will fade in, or perhaps step out from behind an existing member.

What will be really interesting to see is how units of different types on the same tile will interact/cooperate graphically in battle. There will be some kind of "combined forces" function, as offensive units will have backup from any bombard or defence units present. A separate battle scene, as it CtP, or simply strongest unit first until too weak (or all members killed), then some bombardment, followed by next strongest unit, until battle ends?

All we've seen is single ancient units attacking each other....

Has anyone seen yet how ships / armadas / convoys are represented graphically?

Perhaps they only reproduces if they meet amazon warriors or the new
scandinavian UU, Swedish Bikini Team 5.3 - enslavement of all male units...

Oh, judging from the Promotions List over in Apolyton, your units can have anywhere between 1-5 Strength (eg hitpoints), represented in the list by 1 to 5 stars. I am guessing that this represents Conscript (1 star), Green (2 star), Regular (3 Star), Veteran (4 star) and Elite (5 Star).
Also, in this same list, it refers to units causing-and healing- a % of damage (for instance, a unit with Barrage 2 does +20% damage to gunpowder units, and a medic unit heals 10% damage per turn). This would seem to indicate that the relationship between men in a unit, and that unit's HP's, is not 1 to 1. Instead, I would suggest that each MAN has its own HP value-perhaps depending on the type of unit it is. If this is the case, then this is the best evidence yet of how Spearman vs Tank has been eliminated, namely that a regular Tank unit might have the equivalent of 30 HP's (i.e. 3 'man' unit-10 HP per 'man'), wheras an Elite Spearman might only have 10 HP's (5 'man' unit-2 HP per 'man'). You can see how even the best of the best is already at a massive disadvantage when compared to a regular tank unit-even before you account for their combat strengths. Of course, this last part is mere conjecture on my part-but it would be good if it proved true.

So they are going basically back to civ 2 with firepower and hitpoints. They never shoud have gotten rid of that concept in the first place.

In civ2 I rarely remember having low tech units defeat moder era equipment. In civ 3 happens every game!

I would like to see them somehow make it impossible for a land based unit not be able to defeat a sea based unit. unless the land unit had projectile capablity(cannon, tank, TOW) If I was on shore with a rifle and a pirate ship attacked, I would be screwed.

I guess I want all sea bombardment to be lethal.

specalist is good, but a vetrain will ealy defeat one.. for ex. a unit defeing in the forest is a vet, being atacked by a 3 hp unit with a 20% atvandtage in a forest

Actually, Vietcong, history has frequently shown that knowledge of your terrain can MORE than make up for a lack up direct combat experience. Your namesake is just one example. The Mujahadeen is another. The point is that the veteran unit might still win, but they might come out much worse for wear than on an open battlefield.
