CRIMINALS FAIL TO LAUGH AT NEW COMEDIAN. Boston, Republic of New England. A man dressed in what appeared to be a yellow jumpsuit was reported for stopping a chain of daylight robberies in the city of Boston this year. Six robberies total were attributed to a particularly violent gang, who left several people mutilated or killed in their wake with each theft. The Comedian, as his name has been reported to the press, has been rewarded with funds from the city treasury for his successful apprehension of the criminals.

LOUISIANA CENSUS RECORDS LARGER POPULATION. New Orleans, Empire of Louisiana. The Louisianan government has taken full measure of the changes as a result of the massive negro migrations from the genocides in Tennessee. The government has registered thousands of new taxpaying citizens and the population in whole has been believed to have increased by fifty percent from the new black residents. These new citizens are fully applicable for service in the Louisianan military, provided that they learn to speak French over their English. (+7 manpower per turn for Louisiana)

UNSA PROTESTS VIRGINIAN SLAVERY. Toronto, Canada. A collection of politicians in Canada have sparked a rising debate across the United Nation States of America. They have lobbied for sanctions and embargo of the Virginian Empire until slavery is brought to a complete end in their colonies. The events surrounding the establishment of Ovambia have brought the slavery issue into focus for much of the UNSA, who were barely aware of the existence of the institution in the outlying regions of Virginian colonial empire. The call was taken up by more politicians within New England, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Louisiana, stating that what made the free and democratic states of America better than the rest was the existence of social mobility and freedom for the masses.

ALGONQUIN ELECTIONS. Fox Falls, Algonquin Nation. The Liberal Party of the Algonquin Nation has once more secured its control this year following elections. The Conservative Party quite clearly was incapable of achieving victory as the Liberals continue to promise improved military standing and international relationships. The liberals have vowed to continue improving the nation’s prowess internationally to discourage future attempts to influence the nation’s internal affairs. (+2 Stability)

VIRGINIA ELECTIONS. Richmond, Virginian Empire. The Virginian government’s elections this year were hotly disputed, as the Liberal Party’s methods for dealing with the unions’ strike the past year came under criticism. The leftist press denounced the government for the violent offensives against unions this year and last year, deploying the military to force people to return to work. Despite the cries from the far left, the Liberal Party has waltzed back into power, as most Virginians remain very solidly against the unions. The government has pledged to upkeep the Virginian economy and to build up the nation’s military, technologically and in numbers. (+2 Stability)

RIOTS IN FLORIDA. Saint Augustine, Florida. A large demonstration in the Floridian capital city of Saint Augustine turned violent this year as military forces were deployed to contain the protestors. The protest was held against Graham’s reign in Florida, which has lasted long past the time he was slated to hold the position. The military fired upon the protestors, leaving hundred wounded or dead. The government ordered martial law in the city and a large number of protesters were arrested for crimes against the government.

DEATH OF WRIGHT IN GEORGIA. Savannah, Georgia. The Georgian government grieved this year with the death of octogenarian Philip Wright who has ruled the nation for almost twenty years. The aging governor’s last act was to officially welcome James Dahl, a respected military leader as the nation’s new leader. Dahl is a noted Klannist and has clearer and more obvious support for the Ku Klux Klan than Philip Wright. Leaders of the Liberal Party have protested against the move, saying that it sidesteps the democratic process. They claim that the Ku Klux Klan is pushing the nation closer and closer to the oblivion of dictatorship. Riots were also spotted by black Georgian residents against the increased Klannist power, and many believe that the time for revolution may soon be at hand.

EACU STRIKES SUBSIDE. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The governments within the East Atlantic Customs Union failed to launched a coordinated effort to address the woes of the unions within the Union. The nations of Texas, Canada, Pennsylvania, and New England have all passed the Union Laws Act which has offered the first minimum wage for most of the countries. This was supplemented by assurances of maximum working hours and safety regulations for dangerous industries in lumber and mining. In Virginia, the strikers of the northwest have continued to be violently suppressed by the military, and the government has refused to recognize any unionist demands.

Central/South American News Report

HURRICANES DEVASTATE CARIBBEAN. Havana, Cuba. Over half a dozen major and destructive hurricanes took place this year in the Caribbean, causing untold numbers of deaths among local populations. A lack of any preparedness or warning is one of the leading causes of the catastrophe and a large part of the Haitian merchant fleet was destroyed as a result. The hurricanes followed quickly after each other across various paths in the Caribbean. The hardest hit regions were Florida and Haiti, but other hurricanes devastated coastlines as far away as Mexico and Texas. Several warships in the Caribbean were capsized by the storms’ record surges, and one of the great images taken by photographers was that of a New Englander cruiser flipped over at sea off of the coast of Jamaica in one of the earlier hurricanes. Below is a listing of damages caused to regional countries, economic details are provided in the topping section of this update.
Haiti: 2 Destroyers, 4 Submarines, 1 Zeppelin Bomber Squadron, 5 Manpower
Cuba: 1 Destroyer, 1 Manpower
Florida: 6 Manpower
New England: 1 Destroyer, 1 Light Cruiser
Texas: 1 Manpower

GUATEMALA ELECTIONS. Guatemala City, Guatemala. The elections this year were highly divisive, tearing apart standing party lines and throwing the process into chaos. Carlos Hernandez, a popular general vital to the victory in El Salvador, managed to rally the masses behind him as a political outsider. Removed from scandal and debate, the new president has secured supreme executive power, promising to “purge corruption and decadence from within Congress and the Guatemalan government.” (+4 Stability)

UNSA INTERVENTION INTERUPTS JAMAICAN ELECTIONS. Kingston, Empire of Haiti. The Jamaican government was declared dissolved by a coalition of forces deployed by the United Nation States of America this year. Texan, Cuba, New Englander, and Haitian naval and ground forces were deployed to restore order in the deteriorating state. Massive riots met the coalition force, as the military was contained by Haitian ground forces. The Rehtu government has stepped down from power and the general has retired in exile to the Swedish Bahamas. The Jamaican military has been brought under Haitian control, and efforts are underway to stabilize the countryside against a growing leftist rebellion. (-1 Stability for Haiti)

WAR IN CENTRAL AMERICA CONCLUDES. San Salvador, El Salvador. The six year long war between El Salvador and the nations of Honduras and Guatemala came to a close this year as allied forces breeched the final defenses around San Salvador. The invaders created a coalition government in order to arrange new elections around the constitution schedule in 1928. The former dictator has been deposed and was executed for murder in the nation of Honduras. The El Salvadorian government has been sworn to remain under Honduran occupation for at least 5 years to ensure national and regional stability.
Casualty List
Honduras: 4 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
Guatemala: 5 Infantry Brigades
El Salvador: 6 Infantry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades

MUTINY IN UCNA. Mexico City, United Collectives of North America. Failures at sea and increasing death rates among the convoys have fueled the spark for a major rebellion and revolt within the ranks of the United Collectives of North America. This came on top of continuous neglect of the population’s needs, leading to neverending lines for food and other basic necessities of life. Several major population centers, spurred on by religious leaders, as well as reactionary members of the military, have launched an assault upon the Kaplaz government. The result was an extremely bloody war across the Mexican countryside. The rebels attempted numerous times to seize control of Mexico City, only to meet with miserable failure. The bloodshed has been enormous as fighting erupted in almost every major urban center from the onset of the coup attempt. To date, though the fighting has stopped, no one is sure of the rebels’ remaining influence within the government and military. (-55 Manpower, -2 Manpower per turn, -61 Infantry Brigades, -23 Artillery Brigades, -5 Tank Brigades, -3 Destroyers, -2 Light Cruisers)

SOCIALISTS LAUNCH MAJOR RALLY. Urquizaville, Argentine Collectives Federation. Even though it seems to many that communism and socialism is on the decline with recent reverses in the United Collectives and China, the governments involved in the International Socialist Cooperative Group had a major celebration in Urquizaville this year. Hundred of Party delegates met in Urquizaville to view a performance of Union in Death as well as to witness a demonstration game by the local collective football club. Delegates from as far away as China made it to the celebration of the virtues and success of socialist ideals.

PARAGUAY RECOGNIZES UNIONS. Asunción, Paraguay. The Conservative Party government, under heavy pressure from the nation’s liberals and socialists, passed a bill this year recognizing labor unions as legitimate political and social institutions. The Paraguayan Workers’ Union proclaimed this to be a major advancement in the progression of the nation to a workers’ paradise much like the Socialist Union of South America. The Paraguayan leadership has remained outspoken, calling the process of passing the bill political blackmail by the unions and socialists.

CRISIS IN THE CARIBBEAN. Kingston, Empire of Haiti. Several ships from the Socialist Union of South America were stopped this year by a large New Englander task force. Though escorted by a battleship, the South American convoy was turned back after the appearance of one of the new Imperial-class battleships. Unwilling to commit his fleet to a destructive engagement, the socialist admiral ordered a hasty retreat south. Other smugglers were caught from the United Collectives, and have been detained or arrested by the Haitian government.

PHANTOM STRIKES AGAIN. Moscow, Russian Federation. The well-known Phantom was spotted out of his usual locale this year when he was tied to a major robbery in the ancient city of Moscow. The Imperial Museum was robbed of one of the oldest jewels in the possession of the tsars, the Karov Diamond. This great gem has been assuredly stolen by the Phantom and police have promised to apprehend the suspect as soon as possible. In the process of the robbery, several civilians were injured, and at least three people were killed, though local law enforcement has chosen not to release their identities to the press.

WAR ERUPTS IN BALKANS. Tirana, Greece. The tranquil Balkans have once more erupted into war this year as a territorial dispute emerged between Serbia and Greece. The conflict began in early January with several border skirmishes between the Serbs and Greeks, and soon it escalated into Serbian demands for Albanian independence. The Greek government has refused to recognize a free Albanian state, and Serbia soon after declared war. Fighting has been heavy to date, as the Serbian military soon found itself in full retreat against the more experiences and better trained Greek army and navy. The Greeks have advances into southern Serbia and have demanded immediate reparations in exchange for the damages caused during the Serbian invasion. There has yet to be a comment from Russia or the Protectorate at this time.
Casualty List
Greece: 33 Infantry Brigades, 5 Artillery Brigades
Serbia: 48 Infantry Brigades, 8 Artillery Brigades

GREECE ELECTIONS. Athens, Greece. The Greek elections this year were completely dominated by the rising crisis with the Serbian government over Albania. The issue of Albanian independence erupted with Serbia’s demands upon the Greek government. Unwilling to part with the nation’s control over the region, the government wholeheartedly rejected the Serbian demands, regardless of threats of Russian intervention. The Greek people backed their government, solidly standing behind the Liberal Party. (+1 Stability)

RUSSIAN COMPANIES UNVIEL NEW PRODUCT. Tsarityn, Russian Federation. The Russian Radio Company revealed this year a new radio design which shrinks the size of a radio dramatically as well as reducing production costs. The new Everyman Radio will be available in sizes of only 1-2 square meters. These devices have already been met with a massive spending boom within the Russian Federation and Protectorate. This has been combined with an eruption of new radio broadcasting stations, playing music over the wireless for the enjoyment of all who can hear.

ULSTER ANNEXED. Belfast, England. As it becomes apparent to the world and the Ulster government that they are unable to hold down the much larger Catholic Irish population, the Protestant government have turned to England for aid. PERSIAN ELECTIONS DISSOLVE INTO DICTATORSHIP. Tehran, Persia. The Persian government this year had a heated debate as both liberal and conservative parties began to collapse. In the wake of the chaos popular military leader Araf Hemmati ran for the presidency and secured it through his charisma and popularity among the people. As Persia’s new ruler, Hemmati has pledged to modernize the nation’s infrastructure and military as to better compete with Persia’s neighbors. (+4 Stability)

TUNISIA ELECTIONS. Tunis, Tunisia. The Tunisian government announced great success with this year’s elections as the Liberal Party turned out the nation’s largest majority in the history of the republic. The government has pledged to stay the course and maintain the nation’s prowess at sea. (+2 Stability)

BALUCHESTAN ELECTIONS. Zahedan, Baluchestan. This year’s elections in Baluchestan remained mostly tranquil as liberal elements of the nation’s politics failed to organize a cohesive response to the standing Conservative Party government. The Kurds have issued a statement of their grievances against the Ottoman government. Firstly they denounced authoritarian policies and the sultan’s regime, refusing to recognize him as the true Caliph. Secondly, the standing political party has been accused of doctoring voting in Kurdish areas to favor Turk residents over Kurdish ones. Lastly they have cited promises of autonomy by both the German and Ottoman governments which had been offered for loyalty during the Suez War. The failure to gain complete autonomy has led to this rebellion. The new Kurdish government has extended an olive branch to the Ottoman regime, calling for “freedom without bloodshed.”

REPUBLICANS ATTEMPT COUP IN GUANGXI. Ghangzhou, Guangxi. Shi Ao Nu has managed once more to defeat an attempt to remove him from power in favor of joining along side the republic against the communist threat. Nu’s regime remains in place despite a lackluster attempt to defeat him. Thanks to loyalists he was able to strike and behead the traitorous movement that sought to oust him. (-32 Manpower, -13 Infantry Brigades)

UCC MILITARY CRUMBLING. Yancheng, Union of Chinese Collectives. The communist Chinese government appears to be collapsing in the eyes of many observers. Large parts of the military have begun deserting to the republican armed forces, and it has been noted that many have been offered service along with their arms to continue the fight against the communist government. The deserters have provided valuable intelligence to the republican army as well as bolstering their ranks. (-13 Infantry Brigades from UCC to Republic of China)

HAWAIIAN PLEBISCITE SPARKS CONFUSION. Honolulu, Swedish Empire. The first plebiscite for Hawaiian independence this year was marked by confusion as no side managed to secure a majority that was required for any action. Though this by default would mean Hawaii would remain with its current status, the king immediately announced another attempt to hold the vote later in the year. Before the events could be held, explosions occurred at several major government buildings, including the Treasury and the Royal Palace. The death of the king spiraled the nation out of control and the Swedish military soon intervened. The Swedish government has outright annexed the islands as they continue to maintain order in Hawaii.

NAVAL BLOCKADE ESCALATES. Saigon, Republic of New England. With the New Englander announcement of closure of sea lanes to all communist shipping to China, a flood of ships have entered to region to stop aid from reaching the communist Chinese. Over one hundred ships from half a dozen nations are now active in the region, attacking South American and United Collective shipping everywhere from the Dutch East Indies to the China Sea. The minor defenses the communists enacted against submarine attacks have proved useless against heavy surface ships as the latest models of battleship engage convoys, leaving nothing but smoking ruin within their wake. Judging by recent counts it is believed by most analysts that over ninety-five percent of all ships bound to the Union of Chinese Collectives have failed to reach their objective.

WAR IN CHINA. Lanzhou, Republic of China. The Republican government launched an offensive this year rivaling the advances of the communists in 1925. Despite some initial successes, the communist forces proved too much for the smaller Republican offensive to handle. The attack was not only contained but the communists managed to retake some territory from the retreating republican forces. In the south over thirty communist divisions were trapped south of the Yangtze River as a major offensive managed to destroy the bridgehead established. These forces were ultimately destroyed or were forced to surrender to the republic. The republican army, capitalizing on their successes crossed north over the river and have continued a brutal drive towards the communist capital. The army of Guangxi has also continued its advances, securing a buffer zone to the north of Guangzhou, in preparation for a republican offensive.

Political Cartoon, From Winnipeg in the Metis Republic

Marécage Cloutier : Cloutier Swamp/Cloutier's Swamp
Là il est! : There it is!
L'Économie: The Economy

The cartoon depicts Parti Syndiqué Leader Serge Sauvage fishing the economy out of the mire it has been in since the massive economic collapse during the cloutier years, which halved the economic strength of the Métis. This year, we have finally exceeded our previous peak, and have reached a new level of economic power.

The odd sign over his hair is something of a Métis in-joke. It is understood to be a feather in the hair, and a Fleur de Lys. Such a sign represents those who have 'a foot in both worlds', trying to identify as both Native and European. Many Métis view this as a good thing and part of their heritage, while many others choose to identify exclusively with one ancestry, and use the plume (feather) de lys a a joking satire

We would like to make sure that our revolution for independence comes about with freedom without bloodshed. We hope that you will recognize our freedom without a military response, though we are prepared to defend ourselves. Mesopotamia has seen enough of war over the past decades and it would be to all of our advantage to allow us our sovereignty as a fellow Islamic state.

Lord Iggy’s political cartoon was accepted over that of flyingchicken’s for the reason that flyinchicken already posted his on the thread. As people have already had a greater chance to see that, it would be unfair not to display the newer one. As before, I continue to request that political cartoon submissions are sent via private message if you want them included in a update.

@flyinchicken: 1930 will be the next year that quality stats are updated, rest assured that your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

@EmperorBao: Only 1 Stability level can be raised at a time, the rest of your EP has been banked.

@bombshoo: I did not receive confirmation of such a large contribution from Sweden, please discuss with Vanguard. I have interpreted spending and deployment based on the lesser numbers.

Also EQ would it be ok to write stories about these "super heros" without playing any nation? I guess with the nation's player's consent.

Yay! It came! Thank you, Lor...oops, forgot myself. Thank you, Marx! ;) And thank you, EQ.

Deseret's open? Oh, it's so tempting to take it (I live in Utah). But I'll stick with Argentina.

@Kentharu: you're more than welcome to write about the super-heroes, but as you suggest, with the players' consent if applicable. If you have ideas on new people, feel free to suggest some via Private message.

Bonjour! Recent successes in the West Pacific have, as you know, been instrumental in the whittling down of the Union of Chinese Collectives' forces. For that, we, and indeed the entire free and capitalist world, thank you profusely.

However, our devotion to the Republic of China does not end there. While the Union is not long for the world, Guangxi still stands ready to plunge the region into unutterable, unending chaos. That is why we would like to have a discussion with your plenipotentiary on organizing offenses into these fringe regions of China and help secure the Republic to its rightful position.

Yours most truly and humble,
Leon Justin Rousseau, head of the department of foreign affairs of the National Republic of France

No, but Deseret is Mormon, and probably socially very similar to Utah (with Mormon and Anti-Mormon factions), right?

But I'll stick with Argentina.
