A Tryst with Destiny

Our time is ending. The war of succession was incredible indeed. A great clash of Great People. Senapati Vijayanand was the first to leave us if I'm not mistaken, then me (Raja Abhaya), now Amatya Martand too.

If I didn't skip any chapters, there are still Amatia Nyogi and the infamous KartikeyaKing to end this era.

Congratulations Mahamatya Kartikeya, you stood while we passed away. Will revenge take place? :mischief:

I'm still alive!

I'm still alive!

I thought your character only stepped in after the succession crisis, didn't him?

If I remember correctly, Amatya Aditya (my last character) died prior to the crisis, created by CaterpillarKing KartikeyaKing when Senapati Vijayanand (DKVM) tried to avoid the crisis that the decision of the last Samrat could create. Thus started the Succession Crisis, with that stupid Samrat I forgot the name on the throne and Prince Puttalaka Mandalaka being favored by my faction (when I became Raja Abhaya).

It was Abhaya, Nyogi and Vijayanand vs Mahamatya Kartikeya. Amatya Martand was sent to Persia and there he ruled. He was the most benefitted in all of this. He was in terms with both sides, and he could control Persia for all this troubled time without much trouble. Both sides needed Persia.

Then we overthrew the Samrat, throned Puttalaka and abolished the Mahamatya role, bringing back the council. Then your character stepped in, in the post succession crisis era, the Great Reform era, if I may name it this way ;)

KartikeyaKing is still on the loose, and I don't remember reading about Nyogi (TheNoob), it may have slipped my attention (or faded from memory )

Allow me to dispel any confusions :) . This is how the sequence of events happens :

1) The war of lions : The root of the present crisis actually lies in the War of lions between India and Persia which ended in an indian victory and created the Persian protectorate. The aftermath of the war was a big rebellion in Pataliputra and the enthroning of a bastard king, Samrat Hāla.

2) New regime : This Samrat elected a new ministry, had a wife, Queen Lilavati princess of Lanka and two sons from her. The first born son died, the heir next in line was Prince Puttalaka and he was basically a jerk so he was weary of appointing him as the successor. Then Amatya Aditya was assassinated by the minions of death. Following that, Samrat Hāla was killed.

3) The genesis of the crisis of succession : On the day of the emperor's assassination, he offered to appoint Senapati Vijayanand, his closest friend and mentor after Amatya Aditya's death, and who was instrumental in getting his marriage to Queen Lilavati. Senapati Vijayanand could not refuse in his dying breath, but did not wish to accept this either because he did not want to deprive the princes from their rightful throne. Now the whole affair was brought before the ministerial council who would deliberate over the question of succession.

4) The ministerial council : There were two meetings in which the ministers decided upon succession. The ministry was split in both cases and it was revealed after the first meeting that Kartikeya and Martand were in a big conspiracy to place Puttalaka on the throne. They manipulated Senapati Vijayanand's vote to make him look like the conspirator who wanted to usurp power and succeeded in this. Then there were riots in the city and that is when the Senapati made his escape along with Amatya Niyogi. After the revolt, Amatya Bhimdev (Baseballpie) quit and took sanyas in the Himalayas.

5) Lankan intrigues : Queen Lilavati proved to be the mastermind behind the counter-conspiracy against Kartikeya and Martand. Senapati Vijayanand and Niyogi escaped to Lanka where they built up their forces to retake Pataliputra and dethrone Puttalaka. In the meanwhile, the full scale of Kartikeya's conspiracy was becoming evident as he destroyed improvements around North Western India when the Kushana were about to invade India.

6) Persian intrigues : In the meanwhile, Martand was making himself busy getting rid of the various Persian warlords trying to claim the throne of Persia against the incumbent puppet king installed after the war of lions. After getting rid of them, he killed of the puppet king as well and became the de-facto ruler of Persia, albeit as viceroy to the Empire of Magadh. This just before the Kushanas came in Kamboja province.

7) The attack : As part of the Lankan intrigues, an emissary was planted in Pataliputra by King Abhaya of Lanka. This emissary manipulated the samrat into accepting a welcoming party from the king of Lanka. Now, after reports of the revolt came to Senapati Vijayanand and others, it was decided to move before time, but the troops of Lanka were not ready, so the help of the garrison of Chola Nadu was sought. Lanka already had a much stronger navy, but not enough ground troops. Adding the spears from Kanchipuram to Senapati Vijayanand's faction made it stronger. Now an army of over 15000 (five units) landed in Pataliputra.

8) Kartikeya's escape : In his last desperate move, he had realized that he could not hold on any more. He resorted to kidnapping the queen and crown prince and held them hostage. Along that time, he killed off Puttalaka. At the most crucial time, it was the immortal scribe Mrityunjay who helped Vijayanand take Pataliputra and defeat Amatya Kartikeya's plan. But the Amatya had now escaped.

9) Council of elders : Kartikeya was on the run for years, next we hear of him was in Central Asia where the council of elders of the minions of death occurred. There a decision was made to strike at the Province of Syria, following which plan the Judaean revolt took place ( and is still going on).

10) After the end of the crisis : the old ministry was dead and gone by now, Kartikeya had already usurped all ministries and made himself the mahamatya. After the crisis, Raja Abhaya reformed the ministry and created a new council, the new king, Samrat Mandalaka was a weak king but he had a very capable advisor (Raja Abhaya). After he matured following the death of Dowager empress Lilavati, he showed signs of becoming more capable. During his reign, he married a princess from the Deccan region, Queen Gautami. She'll be mentioned in the next update.

11) Retirements : Soon after the end of the crisis and the retirement of Senapati Vijayanand, Niyogi retired first adopting buddhism and joining the Mahabodhi sangh ( or something along those lines ). At this point only Martand and Raja Abhaya remained from the crisis period. Later retirements included Pandit munindra and the other ministers who were appointed by the new regime under Raja abhaya's guidance. This is part of the compulsory retirement of ministers after 35 years (7 turns as of now) of service. This includes mrrandomplayer's character as well :p . By now Kartikeya is long dead and gone, but it is rumored that he was instrumental in killing Kujula Kadphises and bestirring his grandson Kanishka to invade India.

12) Time period : keep in mind, that though in terms of the game the crisis went on for 20 years (26 AD - 46 AD), the story did not follow this time gap. Instead we compressed the events of the crisis into 4 months. Now it is 81 AD. The Kushan invasion takes place over 20 years ending in around 66 AD. Amatya Martand's death is actually around this time. He was around 30 when he joined the ministry of Samrat Hāla and remained as an important figure well into his 90s. He dies around the ripe old age of 96, though I haven't made up my mind on this.

You know, historically, they were just different names of the same person ! but for the sake of the story I split it in two different persons :p . There is a lot of uncertainty and ambiguity in Indian history. It does kind of feel bad when one thinks over it, that the achievements of great people may just have been forgotten ... Just imagine, no one even remembers who Vijayanand was or who Hāla was. Only historians and people interested in Indology would even have heard these names ! So the general who conquered Sri Lanka and South India ( in the real world ) and the author of Gatha Sattasai .. was just forgotten.. till some englishmen found out about them :p .

btw, I found a copy of the Gatha Sattasai by Samrat Hāla in the Asiatic society a couple of days back. I read only a portion of it, it was very interesting and gives insights into the daily life of people in the Satavahan empire. Its also an erotic text, my Indologist friend said "it crossed every boundary of erotica"

We should begin the work of the ministry now. I request all ministers to go to the ministers of Magadh group and read the report as well as check the updated list of ministers.

There are two more posts to write :

1) The succession of the ministry of domestic affairs.

2) The new Senapati.

And I got the flu while in my finals period, that's what I call good timing :p

You know how it is when chasing that 3rd Indian UHV and then just when you're about to get the largest population, the plague hits ? This is exactly like that !

The Chandravanshi civil war brought the ruin of the Lunar dynasty. That dynasty which had held the mantle of Magadh for eight centuries, came to an end with the crushing strength of an elephant's foot as the renegade Ripunjay was executed before the angered masses. In its place, a new dynasty emerged from the line of Pradyota, this would be the Pradyota dynasty.

Pradyotraj inherited a realm in peril. The Chandravanshi civil war had caused much damage to the Western front and drained the wealth of the Janapadas. In the West, beyond the Sindhu, Parasik raiders still threatened the borders of the realm while at home Orthodox Brahmins threatened the stability of the throne. Through cunning and innovation, Pradyotraj subdued both these forces. A period peace and prosperity was ushered in that would last for centuries.

Pradyotraj proved himself as an administrator and marked himself with the grand building projects initiated and completed by him. A lasting legacy of King Srutunjay was the construction of ashrams for sheltering holy men and civic infrastructure. Pradyotraj expanded on these projects and rebuilt some of these structures which had fallen to disuse. Among his best projects was the gurukul at Takshashila, scholars from across the realm flocked to learn in the open gurukul at Takshashila. The gurukul was established with the ideals of reform that King Biswajit of the Chandravanshi dynasty espoused, anyone regardless of caste could become a student of the gurukul, as long as they were found worthy.

While the people of Misr, far off to the West enriched their civilization with grand constructions, Bharat seemed conspicuous by the absence of such wonders. There were no grand temples that were the envy of the world, no tomb nor palace that could inspire awe in the minds of men. It was a thought that bothered Pradyotraj and inspired him to begin the construction of the first great project, a temple dedicated to the holy triumvirate of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. Construction began in the Kuru Janapada, but it would not be completed till many centuries later.

Whilst Kuru worked on the temple of the Holy triumvirate, the resources of the Gandhara janapada were tasked to build the altar of the grand yagya. The brahmins of Takshashila who studied in its newly built library found a set of shlokas previously unread and unknown hidden within the texts of the vedas and the epic of the Mahabharat. A particular kind of magic which could be mastered only by the wisest of priests was enshrined in these shlokas, once mastered it would give them the ability to view into the future and reveal the secrets of the unknown. A grand yagya was organized in Takshashila whose fire would never die.

Pradyotraj continued the task of explorations to the West. In course of these explorations, the people of Bharata first encountered the race of white skinned sailors, these were the Yavanas who dwelled in city states. The greatest of these city-states was that of Athens, here a great temple to their Goddess Artemis was built. Another Yavan race lay to West of this city who dwelled in a great city named Roma on the land the Yavana called Latium. These races possessed knowledge of iron working and mathematics that had far surpassed that of Bharata. Pradyotraj felt anxious that Bharata would be backward before such people whose demeanor and warlike nature had perturbed the emperor. It was for this reason that he turned to mysticism, and conducting the forbidden ritual at the grand altar.

Pradyotraj ruled for half a century before passing on the crown to his son, the crown prince Visakhayup. The second Pradyota king, could not hold a candle before the first. Bharatvarsh had recovered and strengthened under the reign of Pradyotraj and the king's council inherited from King Biswajit, Vishakhayup inherited the best of his father's work. To his credit, it must be said that he oversaw the completion of many of his predecessor's projects including the barracks at Kuru and the library at Varanasi.

However, Vishakhayup was not a strong administrator. The janapadas' finances were being drained through excessive expenses, and the king had to resort to higher taxes to repay debts. Over time, the peasants grew restless and the nobles grew tired, the Pradyota dynasty was failing. The peasants took arms against the king. A king who had become so weak, the very thought of revolt killed him. A new king would now be appointed by the lords of the various janapadas and the Acharyas would give their blessings. The rebels were pacified, but the disruption led to a flight of citizens from Pataliputra.

The summers on the Oxus, it is said, brings with it the winds of hell. The strongest of men and horses perish under the relentless battering of the heat in the summers, to put your feet down on the soil is to have them burned.

After the defeat of the Kushan forces in the battle of Pariyatra Parvat, and the death of the Kushan emperor Kujula Kadphises, the force of Ashvak and Yagbu archers retreated back into the desert. Senapati Martand, had not spared them even after defeat when he timed their retreat with the oncoming of summer. Heat and fatigue made the retreating men mad, many lost their way into the desert trapped in a hellish land, thirsty and tired. A few chose to remain around the borderlands of Kambojadesa.

These few were not soldiers anymore, they were raiders pillaging Caravans and outlying villages to sustain themselves. These bands of raiders and bandits were all that remained of the grand army summoned by Kujula Kadphises. It has been 35 years since the defeat on the hills of Bactria, but the Kushan never truly forgot that humiliation. Vima Takto, the elder son of Kujula Kadphises now ruled from the throne at Afrasiyab, for all these years he sat in wait, rebuilding the strength of the Kushanas, for one final assault on the lands to the South.

Emperor Vima Takto sat on the throne of Afrasiyab, he rubbed his knuckles sitting deep in thought. His persona felt like an aged lion, far past his prime yet possessing a regal grace. He was not the warrior his father was, but he was not lacking in strength, like those before him in the Kushan dynasty, he was no less than six feet tall and bore a conical skull from ritual deformation. Today was no ordinary day, for a very important message was to come his way.

One by one, the nobles of the Kushan empire entered the throne room heralded by the court heralds, these were the horselords who commanded hordes of Ashvaks, the ashvadhyaksh. The first was the Ashvadhyaksh of Tarim, garbed in the silks from the Han empire holding a banner with two prancing stallions, the next was the Ashvadhyaksh of Tocharistan garbed in leather and rough cotton garments bearing a gilded crown holding before him the banner of Hercules, then came the two Ashvadhyaksh of the Oxus each fielding a banner of a sword, one with field of gold and another with a field of green.

Emperor Vima Kadphises was pleased to see the attendance of all four great Ashvadhyaksh. Together with the emperor's own forces the horselords command twelve legions of ashvaks. The emperor rose to address the gathering of lords before him. "Noble Ashvadhyaksh of the Kushan empire, today we gather here in the palace of Afrosiyab, united with a common goal. It has been four decades since my esteemed father, emperor Kujula Kadphises road out beyond the Himalayas to conquer the rich lands of Bharat. He died a warrior's death pursuing the dream that has driven our Tocharian race. The dream of glory ! The dream of conquest ! That one day our descendants may dine with gilded cups in a fertile land, not these wasteful sands of Tocharia but along the plains of the Indus. Though defeated, we are not broken, for the warrior's blood that runs through us, still runs strong.

It has been many years since we had a good fight, the Xiongnu have been crushed and our forces in the Tarim have been restored, our royal engineers have prepared for 400 siege weapons to destroy the walls of Herat, with our forces, not even the army of Magadh shall stand in our way. Our horsemen are baying for blood, Kushan warriors demand revenge for their fallen leader. Not a day has passed, that I had not remembered that ominous day, when I heard our emperor, my esteemed father returned dead from the field of war. I have sworn vengeance upon the foes of our empire then and now I intend to have my retribution !"

The Ashvadhyaksh and their entourage numbering a total of one hundred, looked to the emperor with gleeful excitement, for long it was thought that Vima Takto was weak and had shunned the ways of war that had driven those before him, but today they were proven wrong. The battles with the Xiongnu were fought to victory under Vima's leadership and now they prepared for the long ride South for retribution. The emperor continued, "This war is not just my revenge, it is the revenge for all those whose pride was slighted, for all those of us who have fought and lost on the hills of Pariyatra Parvat. This is our time, pledge your hordes to me and I will lead you to victory, I will lead you to the conquest of Bharat!"

The first Ashvadhyaksh to pledge his horde was the Ashvadhyaksh of Tarim, "I Sabadpizes of Tarim pledge my horde to you" the others followed, the Ashvadhyaksh of Tocharistan, the Ashvadhyaksh of South and North Oxus all pledged their hordes to the leadership of Vima Takto. Together they would gather their troops and ride to Herat.

"Are you certain ?" Gautamiputra Satakarni asked sternly as he walked down briskly through the corridors of the palace.
"As certain as there is daylight samrat. This morning Raja Chulabhaya mentioned to me very clearly, that within two weeks he would return to Lanka and take his troops back with him and that he would relinquish his ministry!" the royal scribe explained,
"Not today, not like this. Let me talk with him."

Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni was not one to lose his cool easily, but when he did it was a sight to behold. He was not tall, but he was strongly built and had a firm determined face with the dark skin of his forbears. When dressed in regal garb he was the personification of authority. Matching his determined but tempered anger Raja Chulabhaya's determination which bordered on stubbornness.

Relations had been cordial with Lanka which enjoyed the protection of the empire of Magadh. Raja Amandagamani Abhaya had been bound to the ruling dynasty through bonds of marriage, but it had been an age since Empress Lilavati died and Raja Amandagamani himself had passed away. Raja Chulabhaya never saw the battles of the crisis of succession nor the first Kushan wars. He never truly accepted Magadh's overlordship over Lanka, yet could it be that he would have such disregard for his father's legacy that he would throw it away so readily ?

'If Lanka secedes' the emperor thought, 'we may have a war on two fronts. I must not let this happen.' he came before the chamber of the minister for domestic affairs, Raja Chulabhaya was packing his scripts and accounts and other belongings in his department. "Raja Chulabhaya!" the emperor exclaimed, then walked near to the king of Lanka.
"I have been told you are leaving Magadh. That you are leaving the ministry."
Raja Chulabhaya rose up and looked dismissively at the emperor. "I am leaving this office and this ungrateful country for Anuradhapura. Yes it is true Samrat, and I am taking the army of Lanka with me."
"Raja Chulabhaya, do not forget that you serve the throne whose integrity your esteemed father fought.."
The king replied incensed, "Keep your pretenses to yourself Samrat ! Spare me this false praise you show for my father, this nation never respected him."
Mrityunjay intervened, "Raja Chulabhaya, we only had the highest regard for your esteemed father, but to relinquish the ministry and retreat with Pataliputra's only defense ?"
"Yes, perhaps then you would understand and appreciate our contribution." Raja Chulabhaya rose up and walked to the emperor.

Raja Chulabhaya looked into the Samrat's eyes and dared to speak, "Samrat, I regard your strength and the prestige of Magadh, we Lankans see ourselves as part of Bharatvarsh, but we only demand that we be given our due respect. My father raised an army of Lankans to win the throne for your father, to secure the integrity of this empire and defend Pataliputra. As an amatya he initiated reforms that have brought prosperity to the realm. Yet, not half of his decisions were ever put into force." The samrat viewed Raja Chulabhaya incredulously finding it hard to believe what he was hearing, he changed his stance when he replied, "What pray, makes you think so Raja ? When our taxes have increased, when our spending on research has increased so far ? Bharat stands atop all the great nations of the world today, and your father brought it to a silvern age of prosperity."

"If only that were true." Raja Chulabhaya said grimly, he pointed to a servant taking away his accounts. "I have gone through the accounts of the empire, there are glaring discrepancies in the finances of your provinces, all save Magadh are under-performing. Varanasi, Indraprasth, Takshashila even your own ancestral seat at Avantinagar. If you want I can show you." The samrat would not believe till he saw the truth of the raja's words with his own eyes, he looked to the servant and ordered, "Drop those sacks." he turned to Chulabhaya, "Lets see the truth of what you say. Mrityunjay, you will stand witness here."

For the next two hours they went through accounts, argued, debated. Finally, the full picture was made clear to the emperor, "This is regrettable indeed. Our empire has lot much from these discrepancies. I will see to it that the governors of these provinces are made to answer for this."
"I would indeed hope you did so samrat, but I cannot stay on." Raja Chulabhaya prepared to leave his chambers,
"Raja Chulabhaya, let us not hold such bitterness. Mistakes can be corrected, I give you my word, that your father's work will not go to vain. This does not warrant such a departure."
"You would abandon us so abruptly Raja ?" Mrityunjay spoke,
"It is not one slight, but one of many, it may be so that you can do what your father could not Samrat, but I do not feel I can do much more from here."
Gautamiputra Satakarrni again changed back to his angered avatar, "Raja Chulabhaya do not forget .."
"Raja Chulabhaya, I implore you, stay at least a while longer. You must not abandon the future of Magadh, at least do justice to your ministry. How would you answer to your father ?"

Mrityunjay's words seemed to have impacted the raja, Chulabhaya paused and contemplated over his actions. "Fine, as you say. I will make it so that a worthy amatya can take my place in this ministry." Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni was yet to be satisfied, he stood with folded arms and asked with a stern undertone, "What of the Lankan troops?"
"As was agreed with my father before me, the troops and navy of Lanka are under the sovereign command of the Raja of Lanka. I have made my sovereign decision to bring them back to my to the isle of Lanka.. or would you question my right to do so .." there was a hint of a challenge in Raja Chulabhaya's words, the Samrat was forced to calculate a decision here. Mrityunjay looked on with anxiety as the two royals stared at one another, trying to call the other's bluff.

Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni had chosen to focus his efforts on the war with the Kushan, should he irk the raja of Lanka, not only would Magadh be losing a valuable ally, but the empire itself would be under the peril of a lankan invasion. There were no other troops at Pataliputra, save those that belonged to Lanka. It was almost as if Raja Amandagamani had calculated his moves for this day. The emperor smiled, "And why would you think that Raja Abhaya ? We will not question the valued sovereign right of the Raja of Lanka." he held the raja's hand and expressed his gratitude, "May there be peace and prosperity between our two nations."

Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni ensured that the departure of the Lankan army would not disturb his plans. Before he would embark on the hard journey to the distant land of the Kushans, he would need to secure the defenses of the major cities of the empire. His first concern was the defense of each of the metropolises of Takshashila, Indraprrasth, Varanasi and Pataliputra. With the departure of the Lankan army Pataliputra was undefended, so to ensure that each city had a garrison the samrat who had taken upon the command of the military, reorganized the defenses of each of the cities.

The garrison of Varanasi was thus reassigned to Pataliputra, the garrison of Indraprasth was transferred to Varanasi and an additional division of archers defending Takshashila were transferred to Indraprasth. With these measures to reorganize the army, the defense of each city was ensured and a smoother transfer of Lankan troops could be effected.

While on the economic front, Raja Chulabhaya focused on enacting such measures as would see the fulfillment of his father's vision for economic reforms. When the truth of the omissions on Raja Amandagamani's reforms were brought to the Samrat, one of this first acts was to seek out who the corrupt governors and their subordinate administrators who interfered with the proper implementation of his reforms. Each of them were sought out and were punished either with exile or imprisonment. Raja Chulabhaya personally saw to the appointments of the new governors for each of the empire's cities.

The first city to undergo a change in policy was at Varanasi. Here a sect of monks had bribed the governor to supply their matha with workers and gems. This math was closed down and the worker guilds working under their service was made to mine the gems to the jungles in the South.

After Varanasi, the Samrat and Raja Chulabhaya turned their attention to the western city of Takshashila. What was found here was not an example of corruption as much of ignorance and incompetence. Since the last of the insurgents and bandits let loose by the infamous Amatya Kartikeya, the quarries were left unexploited. Not simply that, the farmers of Gandhar were devoid of the benefits of farming the floodplains that lay beside the quarries. The governor it seemed still felt that the threat of long dead bandits was still alive, the Samrat befittingly punished him by exile to the Parasik lands. The farming community from the Sutlej were resettled along the floodplains, these villagers provided the manpower to work the marble quarries.

With Varanasi and Takshashila improved, there was only Indraprasth that was yet to be brought under the ambit of the new reforms. Here, the yavana governor seemed to have performed better than the other provinces, his error being an error an error in understanding the directive of mining the hills of Kumaon. The governor had administered Indraprasth and from there the province of Kuru since the 50th year of the Vikram Samvat. His old age and feebleness had left him in no position to continue his work, the samrat allowed his due retirement. The new governor, this time a dravida, promptly corrected the error of his predecessor and allocated workmen to mine the hills of Kumaon.

The reforms had now been implemented, the results showed almost immediately. The month after Raja Abhaya's reforms were implemented in full, the empire raised more taxes that one month than the two months preceding it ! Avantinagar however, remained small and under-developed. Regardless, Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni felt the stage was now set to begin the war on the Kushans.

The emperor travelled to Takshashila in the province of Gandhar, here the army of Magadh was situated in a mining town on the Pariyatra Parvat. West of this province, at the fort town of Herat, the garrison of Herat remained alert. They possessed a division of spearmen and a legion of veteran scouts. The emperor met with the Saka king Pacoras at Takshashila and sat to drew their war plans at the royal manor of Takshashila.

"Pranam Raja!" the emperor greeted Pacoras, "Pranam Samrat" the Saka king folded his hands and bowed before the emperor. Though taller of stature than the Samrat of Bharat, he knew his place before one of the most powerful men in the known world. Likewise, Samrat Gautamiputra knew how indispensable the Parasik were in defending against would be barbarian conquerors from beyond the Oxus river. The Saka king knew more about the affairs of Afrasiyab than anyone else in the realm. It was said, he had a network of spies spread from Afrasiyab to the frontiers of Han empire, Samrat Gautamiputra Satakarni intended to use this.

The emperor and the Saka king sat down on the seat and the emperor spoke, "If we are to win this war, we must prepare the conditions of our victory before the Army of Magadh marches on the enemy."
"How, Samrat, do you hope to achieve this ?"
"From the reports that have come to me from the governor of Gandhar, there are Kushan raiders who are pillaging North of Herat. These have to be done away with before the Army of Magadh marches and we will only begin our march in the spring season when the weather is kind to us."
Pacoras nodded in agreement, "That seems like a wise course of action, yet it would still be far from guaranteeing victory." Pacoras crossed his legs and leaned towards the emperor ,"Of course, there must be more to your plan than just defeating the raiders. What do you have in mind?"
the samrat smiled, "I would not have called you King Pacoras, if the Army of Magadh could fight this war on its own. I am told, your spies are spread across the Kushan empire up to the frontiers of the Han empire in the East. These would be our most dangerous weapon."
"Samrat, you had my curiosity, now you have my attention. What would you have my spies do?"
"We need to infiltrate the ranks of the Kushan army, know of their movements before they would know of ours'. The spies must spread lies among the forces of the Kushan emperor on our strategies. Create distrust among their forces turning one Ashvadhyaksh against the other. This would weaken them, while the Army of Magadh marches to conquest in the North."
"Of course no doubt, you would like the Parasik domain to grant your troops rest and support while you wage this war on the distant lands of Tocharia, is it not?"

The Samrat nodded and for a time there was a pause. King Pacoras rubbed his chin thinking over the task that the emperor had assigned for him. "it seems that you wish to fight a shadow war, hollowing the enemy before your blades see blood. Pedant ! So it shall be done." The king rose up as did the Samrat, "Before we begin, I should let you know, the news we do have from the sands of Tocharia. The emperor Vima Takto has summoned the four leading ashvadhyaksh, he intends to marshal the full strength of the horselords for this final invasion of our lands. Twelve divisions of horsemen are being readied for war assisted by 400 siege weapons." The samrat was alarmed by this news, "So it seems my coming to Gandhara could not have been more opportune ! We must make haste, and make war."

The first act of the second Kushan war began a mere three weeks after the emperor came to Herat to rally the spearmen in its garrison. He had decided that this time, he would personally lead the war effort and make the Kushan pay for their attacks. The lands North of Herat had been scorched by the Kushan raiders, there was not a village that did not show a sign of destruction, but these raiders did not operate on the orders of the Kushan emperor, or so it was believed.

Spearmen, it was held were the ideal counter to Horse cavalry. Gautamiputra Satakarni had learnt this basic tenet of war in the royal academy of Pataliputra. During his command of the elephant division of the Army fo Magadh, he distinguished himself as a master tactician. His campaign against the raiders reaffirmed this. The spearmen were deployed along the forests North of Herat assisted with the legion of veteran scouts, the forests were where the raiders were said to have encamped. The campaign took place in the manner of a sweeping operation where the spearmen infantry fought smaller detatchments of Ashvaks whose movements were traced by the veteran scouts.

Before the month was over, the raiders were all but annihilated with only a handful having retreated to the forests. These were defeated in head on battle and their leadership captured. He revealed more to the forces of Magadh than they could ever have known.

The war with the Kushans had now begun in earnest, and the Samrat of Bharat had taken the battle to the Kushans. Now it is they who will know fear.

A nightmare haunted Vima Takto, every night it came like a sickness upon him. In those dreams he would see a legion of armored war elephants, their iron skin gleaming in the hot punishing mid-day sun, standing like foreboding sentinels over a valley between two large hills. He saw himself riding his steed clad in the leather armor of an Ashvak warrior, a hundred warrior riders followed behind him clad in the same leather armor of an Ashvak warrior, they rode against the war elephant that stood guard on the valley.

The elephants trumpeted at the sight of his legion riding, their armor made an ominous clanking sound. It was an odd clarion for death he thought, the Ashvaks rode out howling their war cries, unperturbed by the elephants. Then a strange and unexpected thing happened, the horses slowed down, they neighed and jumped, it was as if a strange fear had gripped them. Vima's horse behaved uncontrollably and threw him off and ran. The war elephants then began their charge, of the horsemen who remained on their steeds, their horses hesitated to move and their first instinct was to evade the elephants.

Vima found himself on the ground, injured and stumbling on the hard rocky ground. The war elephants closed on the Ashvak troops, before he could realize it, the elephants had come within 20 feet of him. Around him he saw a sight of carnage, the elephants attacked the horses and their riders, slashing crushing and breaking bones as they marched ahead. He looked up, and saw the great foot of a war elephant with the full weight of its iron armor falling upon him, a horrid crunching sound followed, yet Vima did not feel it, the nightmare had not ended.

There was darkness for a brief moment and then he woke up to see the elephants marching ahead, following close behind them were legions upon legions of troops. Thousands of archers, Kamboja horsemen, swordsmen, spearmen and axemen. He found himself flying across these troops high above in the sky, and then he saw before him a city that was only too familiar. It was Afrasiyab perched beside the Oxus river. In a flash day turned to night and he saw Afrasiyab, the city burned. From a distance, he could hear the faint screams of dying men women and children. "Naaaoooo!" Vima screamed as he woke up, the night before was like all others.

The bedroom was still intact, the palace still stood over him, 'The same dream' he thought to himself as he made his way out of bed. It was still early in the morning, he walked up to the bedroom window and opened it to see the faint light of the dawn. His bedroom window faced east to a rising sun, rising above a plain desert surrounding the Oxus river. 'I am still here, we are still here, the dream must never be fulfilled' he thought himself, yet a part of him fed those very fears. That one day the Army of Magadh, which he fought so valiantly at the battle of Pariyatra Parvat, would one day march up to the boundaries of the capital city of the Kushan.

It was a fear that has haunted the emperor for the past five years, and every night the same vision would come before him. Five years ago, he stood triumphantly at the throne room in his palace, addressing the Ashvadhyakshas of the Kushan empire. Then each of the four great horselords of the realm had pledged their hordes to him, then calamity struck. The Han empire who had been at peace with with the Kushans in the Eastern borders, suddenly declared war, the reasons it seems were a series of alleged transgressions on the Chinese held city of Dunhuang, by the Ashvadhyaksh of Tarim. Vima himself did not trust these reports, but the Ashvadhyaksh fell for the trap. The horselord rallied his fledgling troops to defend his possessions. Thus, four divisions were lost to him.

As if it weren't bad enough that one calamity had struck, that another debacle came upon the emperor. This time it was within the Oxus itself, for long years a rivalry had brewed between the two greatest ashvadhyakshas of the Tocharian plain, they fought for supremacy along the Oxus and control over Bactria. These were the horsemen who had threatened the Kamboja lands since the Kushan raised their banner of war. Vima's father emperor Kujula Kadphises had brought about peace between the two warring clans at the point of his blade. Now that the emperor's own horde far outpowered and outnumbered the rivals the two horselords were scared to continue their rivalry while the Kushan dynasty still reigned. That was then, an age when the might of the Kushan could still strike fear, the present was different. After the defeat of the Kushan army at Pariyatra Parvat, the authority of the emperor was challenged, the horselords revolted and challenged the emperor's writ.

Vima Takto fought many battles with the renegade horsemen and their minions, ultimately he forced upon them a compromise, the daughter of the Ashvadhyaksh of the North would wed the son of the Ashvadhyaksh of the South. With the bonds of a marital alliance peace was established between the two rival clans, but now that too was undone. The son proved to be an inept romantic running away with a dancer employed in his service. The old rivalry re-emerged and Vima Takto could no longer hold the peace. He let the two clan fight among themselves relegating the emperor to the ignoble stature of a mute spectator.

The final nail in Vima Takto's war plans came from the Tarim basin. Under a mysterious illness, the Ashvadhyaksh of the Tarim had fallen ill and died, and many of his best commanders and trainers met a similar fate. The floodplains of the Tarim basin seemed to have bred a new kind of illness unknown to the medics of the realm, the emperor suspected poison or foul play for this illness was more common to the jungles deep in the heart of Bharatvarsh. "I am fighting a war in the shadows it seems.." he lamented as he reminisced the hopeless state of affairs.

He changed into his royal garb of silken robes and adorned his crown, a golden disk. He walked to the throne room to conduct the business of the empire. A messenger then came with news that he had dreaded for five years. "Maharaj Vima, I bring grave news from the borderlands." the messenger said,
"What is it ?"
"The army of Magadh was spotted crossing over the river Oxus. An outpost guarding a worker guild was overwhelmed by their sheer strength. There is no news of what befell the guild.."
The emperor's face turned pale, "They are coming" he whispered to himself in a fear striken voice.
