About totem...
Because I was unaware about totem matter, I've made some researches on wikipedia.
First thing I've learnt is the main difference between totem and totem-pole.
Quote for totem:
A totem is a stipulated ancestor of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe.
Totems support larger groups than the individual person. In kinship and descent, if the apical ancestor of a clan is nonhuman, it is called a totem. Normally this belief is accompanied by a totemic myth.
Although the term is of Ojibwe origin in North America, totemistic beliefs are not limited to Native Americans. Similar totem-like beliefs have been historically present in societies throughout much of the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and the Arctic polar region.
In modern times, some single individuals, not otherwise involved in the practice of a tribal religion, have chosen to adopt a personal spirit animal helper, which has special meaning to them, and may refer to this as a totem. This non-traditional usage of the term is prevalent in the New Age movement, and the mythopoetic men's movement.
Quote for totem pole:
Totem poles are monumental sculptures carved from large trees, mostly Western Red Cedar, by cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. The word totem is derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem, "his kinship group".
Being made of cedar, which decays eventually in the rainforest environment of the Northwest Coast, few examples of poles carved before 1900 exist. Noteworthy examples include those at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, BC and the Museum of Anthropology at UBC in Vancouver, BC, dating as far back as 1880. And, while 18th century accounts of European explorers along the coast indicate that poles certainly existed prior to 1800, they were smaller and few in number.
These concepts bring some important considerations:
1) Totem is a ancient and worldwide item; totem-pole is a recent and western-native limited item
2) As consequences, totem-pole doesn't deserve the rank of "world wonder". Furthermore, it also doesn't deserve the rank of "unique building" for Iroquois, because they were a tribe located in the eastern coast of America. (This also explains why I didn't find any painting showing Iroquois seating or dancing around a totem pole).
3) As final result, we should discuss about to promote totem to the rank of WW or not. Beware: not totem as native american, but totem as worldwide concept, chosing which picture is best representing it.
