Aesthetic City Names

Aaros was pretty cool. Too bad it changed into Aarhus.

Glasgow sounds badass.

Baghdad saddens me that it's in the state it's in.

Istanbul is a better name than Constantinople, but both work well.

Likely 'Istanbul' is a corruption of the periphrasis 'Eis thn Polin', which is greek for "To the City". Such an answer would be given when asked (eg) "where are you going?".

Still sounds dumb, imo. Not that 'Constantinople' is that great a name, but certainly better than a dumb corruption of a phrase not being a name in the first place.
Constantinople is decent, though generic. If we go by city names tied to people's names, at least Alexandreia sounds cooler (Alexandroupolis also exists, and is a not as cool name; same with Constantinoupolis). Besides, etymologically Alexander means something half-cool (protector of men), while Constantine is a latin name (though lost to latin latter on, while very popular in greek).

*note to self: posting agreement with Kyriakos' posts gets a like*

Persepolis is rather obviously a greek name ^^
But isn't Persepolis really the Greek name for the city rather than the actual Persian one?

Kinda like a French person saying "Ha! Your country is named 'Les Etats Unis'... that's obviously a French name!" :p

After a promising first page or so I deeply disappointed by the lack of smut. Let's be honest what brings us more joy and satisfaction than seeing road signs such as these

Because sometimes a single entendre is all you need.

The capital of the island Mytilene is Lesbos. This isn't by chance; Sappho, the ancient female poet, was from there, and rumoured to be into women. So at some point the place itself was used to mean female homosexuality (imo rather crudely, but whatever :) ).
