Lactose-intolerance in the world. Amazing what things you discover while reading a Wiki entry on Big Bang Theory ;)

(BTW, I heard the Chinese gov. wants people to drink more milk. Something tells me it's not such a great idea...)

Indians lactose intolerant? What are they doing with all he cows? A pretty big fail on their part.

That's bizarre.

What's the explanation?

Easy to deduce - Chinese and East Asians (and Native Americans, some sub-Saharan Africans, Australian Aborigines and so on) didn't consume milk. As a result, there was no evolutionary pressure for them to develop lactose tolerance. On the other hand, societies where milk and some other dairy products were consumed, lactose-intolerance was a pretty bad for an individual, so it was gradually eliminated from the gene pool (Tekee will love this).

As for why some agricultural societies don't drink milk, that probably stems from the environmental limitations. China for example was too populous to afford large herds of cattle, therefore cows were not commonly bred (too inefficient use of land and manpower). No cows for meat meant no cows for milk, thus no need for lactose-tolerance.

You can see from the map that most cattle-breeding societies developed a large degree of lactose-tolerance.

Only about a half of Indian pop. is lactose-intolerant according to the map. It's funny - one would expect India to evolve similarly to China and phase-out cattle farming (too inefficient when you're so overpopulated). I blame religious taboo related to killing cows for the difference.

For the Lactose Intolerance thing, I'm surprised to see Latin America like so, since milk is so commonly drank and beef is the #1 thing here. Not to mention they make the best beef here (Argentinian beef ... AMAZING)

Why is DR Congo so different from everyone else?

To be fair, TLO started it.

Uh, right. An altered map. How about...

I never said anything about Poland's geographical position, it was Karylsia that started it.

And that is one heck of an altered map. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the map they teach in Austrian School's to.
Let me make it up to you:

You're finally in Central Europe now!

Meh, that would be an awesome country.
Thank the Gods that Moravia was rejoined with Bohemia later :whew:

They'll be rejoined with the motherland soon enough, don't you worry.

Denmark had their local elections last week. These are the results for the mayors of the counties.

Red = Social Democrats (Most of the big cities and the areas surrounding them)
Blue = Liberals (The low population density counties in the west)
Green = Conservatives (Rich parts of Copenhagen, and some odd ones spread around)
Pink = Socialist PP (Minor)
Grey = Different local parties.

That's weird, as a Chinese-American who grew up drinking milk, I suffer not from lactose intolerance. It may be less genetic and more about conditioning?

It is a little of both, I believe. You may be genetically predisposed to it, but not develop it.
Everyone is lactose tolerant as an infant (your Mommy's milk had lactose in it), so I suspect if you constantly consumed milk it would become less likely for you body to quit producing the enzyme that breaks down lactose (lactase, IIRC). But I don't know for certain.
Or you could just be a lucky person.

Everyone is lactose tolerant as children (so I think that's what the Chinese meant when they said they want people to drink more milk). IIRC it is possible to become lactose tolerant from conditioning.

Everyone has the gene for lactose digestion - it is just that after drinking the mothers milk some people stop at that and therefore they don't need lactase to hydrolyse (break down) the lactose in milk anymore. But in European culture where we do drink milk we continue making the enzyme :D

Chinese-American? Whats that?

The large blocks and sharp divides make me want to call bull on this.

I wish I lived in your country.

Since you brought the subject up, here are the results of the Romanian presidential elections from last Saturday:

Spoiler :
800px-Presidential_election_2009_first_round.png

Traian Basescu - PDL (Democrat-Liberal Party - unofficially, since he's the current president)
Mircea Geoana - PSD (Social-Democrat Party)
Crin Antonescu - PNL (National Liberal Party)
Corneliu Vadim Tudor - PRM (Greater Romania Party)
Hunor Kelemen - (Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania)
Sorin Oprescu - independent
George Becali - independent

Funny how all the rich and developed regions voted for Basescu (Dem-Lib), while the poorest and those closest to the former Soviet Union voted for the Socialist-Democrat Mircea Geoana.

In less than two weeks, I'm gonna be voting for the first time in my life in an election! :D The second round will be between Basescu and Geoana. Most polls put the former about 1.5% above the other, but some have it exactly the opposite way around. In other words, anything could happen.

Since one hasn't been posted in a while....

1460VeniceEmpire.png

(Made by hand and not with that nifty little auto-screenshot thingy)

Aqua-green - The Republic of Venice.

Red - Vassals of the Republic. With the exception of the Papacy and Foix, every vassal is a condominium with varying degrees of authority shared between Venice and the vassal.

Yellow - Countries that are not vassals or allies of the Republic, but have "special relationships" with it. Moldova and Bulgaria were both created thanks to negotiations on their behalf with the occupying powers of Hungary and the Turks, respectively. Despite their betrayal of Venice shortly after their independence, each still has good relations with the Republic, and this will be important in later years

...I'll post another after some time has gone by or if there's anything particularly interesting I wish to show.

I'm sure some of you would enjoy the part where Czexico almost ate me alive... all I wanted was Aquileia! Geez. Darn wannabe-autocrats. :(

Mantua/Switzerland wasn't easy either. Let's just say uber-Burgundy(WITHOUT THE LUCKY TAG!) had already eaten much of France and the Rhineland, and so I barely got away with the goods before they tore me a few new back doors.

Glorious! The Allies have unwittingly paved the way for a Neo-Ottoman Empire(if that's the Turkish flag) and for the Empire of the Rising Sun!

This looks like a what-if if the Allies went with the radical idea of destroying the USSR right in the aftermath of WW2(my father supports this idea if I recall correctly). Is that what this is meant to be?
