What are the red and green lines? oooh Corfu is packed

Not sure, but they could be fast and regular railways :hmm: (or national/regional main roads)

Yes, Corfu is very metropolitan, and beautiful as well :)

Here is a population density map for most of the Eu:

france and spain looks sparsely populated.

I made a "US-style" political map of the EU.

States painted blue have legislatures (lower houses) dominated by right wing parties (anything from centre-right to far-right); countries painted red are dominated by the left wing (anything from centre-left to communism).

I am opened to critical suggestions, because it's sometimes quite difficult to tell what ideology a party truly represents. I've checked Wiki to avoid foolish mistakes (for example, in Portugal the main right-wing party is called "Social Democratic" :crazyeye: ), but I am not quite sure about some countries, namely Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark and Sweden. I think I got it right, but please tell me if you see things differently.

Also, in some countries the ruling government doesn't rely on a majority in the parliament. In Austria there is a grand coalition, despite the fact that right-wing parties dominate the legislature and could form a purely right-wing coalition. (The trouble in Austria is that the other right-wing parties are essentially far right).

Without further ado, here's the map:

Huh, you'd think there'd be a lot more red...

Well, no, because European politics is generally more left wing than US politics. Barack Obama would be considered centre-right in Europe.

Oh I know that... I just thought since he was comparing the two he was going by U.S. standards rather than European standards.

You're looking at a map of Europe and complaining it's done differently to the US?

Huh, you'd think there'd be a lot more red...

Yeah. At the beginning of the current economic crisis, many "experts" predicted a left-wing earthquake in Europe. In reality, the exact opposite happened in most countries which have held elections during the last year and a half.

Well, no, because European politics is generally more left wing than US politics. Barack Obama would be considered centre-right in Europe.

I wouldn't say more left wing, because this term has a slightly different meaning in Europe. Here "left wing" is usually associated with socialism in the economic sphere; in the US it's more about social liberalism.

Oh I know that... I just thought since he was comparing the two he was going by U.S. standards rather than European standards.

That's impossible to do. I mean, how on Earth should I do that? Practically no party in Europe bears any resemblance to the two parties which dominate the US political life.

The two colors should be changed. In the US, red would mean right and blue would mean left.

I know about that, but it would be weird. I mean, why on earth do you use red for a party which is so violently anti-left wing? It makes no sense to me.

Well, I meant on a simple Left-Right scale, moving the center to where the centrists in the U.S. would be, rather than the centrists in Europe.

Still far to the right of any European.

When even our most hard-line, right-wing, fascist/neo-Nazi party (the BNP) won't hear a word of dismantling the NHS, chances are that comparing European and American political standpoints is doomed to failure :D

Not 100% sure, but I believe the two parties used those colors long before red was associated with communism.

No it used to be that the Democrats would have red and the Republicans blue but at some point I think it was the 2000 election it got switched, and then for some reason it caught on and everyone started making the Democrats blue and the Republicans red.
