Altered Maps VII: Making the World a Better Place

I don't mind being part of Gothland. Germans (including Austrians) and Dutch (including 'Flemish') have kind of a similar mentality (but they won't admit it).

Also, due to global warming, all the World would tremble before the might of great Nunavut!!

Finland should be in "Gothland" though, since it falls in under the "people share the same ... history" clause.

I thought the cure was misreading the Bible and twisting it to mean anything you like?
No, you cannot just twist it to mean anything you like, you have to twist it to mean what Glen Beck (and various others, including some non-Mormon.) like. There are lots of ways to misread scripture, but if you are too far gone there is a high risk that your misinterpretations would become a stronger support for communism.

The bible definitly supports communalism though. Sell all your property, use it to help the poor, share all of your benefits. It is pretty heavily endoresed in the early part of Acts.

I was at a summer camp for a week this past Summer, and we got bored. So I remembered IOT here at good ol' CivFanatics, and decided to do a paper-based version of it to pass the time. The game was restricted to Europe, since it was the only map I had with me at the time, but it was pretty freaking awesome. I played as the Republic of Scotland (darker blue).

As you can see, I managed to bully my allies the Normans out of Wales and Cornwall, and the Portuguese out of Galicia and the territories connecting it to Brittany. So I secured a pan-Celtic empire to be feared and respected across the continent. :D

The Portuguese somehow became an insane land-naval-superpower, ravaging large swaths of Italian and Austrian territory on spurious claims. Austria also did very well, taking most of the Balkans, and claiming southern Germany before the Germans could. I'm not sure whether Germany is better or worse off here than it is in real life.

Russia is massive as heck. This did not surprise me at all. They finally realized their dream of taking over the Bosporus.

The Italians were our butt monkey. In a series of wars we all took turns taking some of their territory, with Russia and England taking its Anatolian lands, England taking most of Italy proper (including Rome!), Portugal and Austria taking some of its northern territories, and England and I took over most of its French territories. This left it with a portion of central France, Switzerland, two territories surrounding Ravenna, and the cities of Florence and Monaco.

Iceland arrived late in the game, just in time to take one of Italy's provinces.

Despite my nation's small size, I did manage to conquer the Kaliningrad Oblast from the Russians, and the port of Marseilles from the Portuguese, as well as snatching Norway out from under the Germans' noses. I suppose I operated on my self-coined "Belgium Law", in which a small country, when cornered, kicks a whole lot of... err... butt.

Side notes: Portugal loves islands; Germany controls Malta. Russia started out the game as Romania, so since we were marking claims with the first letter of the country's name, the transition worked out well.

Well, it kept us occupied all week. I made a much larger map for next time, and I'll remember to post the results when that game is finished. I intend to play as the Cordobans/Moors.

Forumgamers might remember me musing about making a Classical version of Imperium Offtopicum. Well, for a start, I made a map:

Spoiler sizeness :

Basically, it's the Europa Universalis III map with redrawn borders. You can see the provinces are very large. This IOT, if it gets beyond the drawing board, won't be a "traditional" IOT. There will be less provinces, but each province will be more important, and each will have their own individual attributes.

Anyway, I'd like suggestions for improvements from our resident ancient and classical geography experts. :)

Call "Germania Superior" the Agri Decumates. Call "Asciburgis" something that evokes the Boii, like "Boihaemum". Rename "Teutoberg" to "Cheruscia".

Don't make Sinai its own province.

Shift Gandhara further south, to its southern territories and the current location of "Porus"; at the moment it is chiefly in the Himalaya. Rename Sattagydia to something like "Paropamisadai".

Rename "Sagartia" to something like "Gabiene" or "Khoarene".

Rename "Insubria" to something like "Annonaria" or "Aemilia".

Rename "Arevacia" to "Carpetania".

Also, your borders are messy and hilariously ugly. You should NES. :3

I'd rather have messy borders than straight-line/simple curved/boring borders.
That's one of the reasons why they're messy, to be honest; they're arguably too straight and too simple, and that makes the territories not link up well and fit together weirdly. Don't get me wrong, I don't think borders should be clean or straight or anything if there's no reason for them to be such in the real world - look at any NES map I've made.

If you point out the worst-offending areas I'll see what I can do.

thirded is rather inelegant.. can I say doubled instead?

NES is too confusing.

One more question - what should I rename "The Steppes", "Northern Forests" and "Syrian Desert"? So basically what are the Classical terms for Central Asia, Siberia and the Syian Desert, respectively.

By "classical" I suppose you mean Latin, because you've been Latinizing everything else...:p

nes is far less confusing that a certain poster from iot.

NES is too confusing.

It's really not as confusing as you're making it out to be. In many ways, it's a lot more liberating than IOT. You're only really limited by your imagination, and how much of a megalomaniac the GM is.

Just come onto #nes. I'm sure we could help to dispel some of your doubts about its awesomeness :)
