If you want more endonymic names I can see about pulling those up as well.

This is a great list you've compiled... much better than the original. Much of it strikes me as fine as-is -- however, parts of it highlight ambiguity and imprecision in the original civ 5 design choices, as well as misconceptions in the general american/canadian/euro-centric understanding: for example, you've listed 'iroquois' as the origin of a few names in your longer list -- however this is not the 'iroquois' that the game intends to represent. Hochelaga, for example, is the name of an old settlement at what is now commonly known as Montreal.. this was a name predominantly used by wendat-huron people... in euro-centric academic anthropology, the wendat-huron are considered an "iroquoiian" culture, however they are/were not part of Hiawatha's confederacy. That's not to say there might not have been confederacy members living there at times, and perhaps referring to it respectfully by the huron name, however confederacy-members also have their own distinct name for this place. Ultimately the Huron and other non-confederacy "iroquoiians" have very their own distinct forms of governance and customs, and should be thought of as separate "civs" in the context of civ 5. Including them as part of the "iroquois" civ is akin to merging the english/french all into one civ due to norman influences they hold in common.

To better represent what civ 5 refers to as the Hiawatha-led 5/6 nations, consider adjusting iroquois civ-name to "Haudenosaunee" (though anglicized slightly, this is the most common version of the proper autonym of the people of the Kanonsonionwe, aka "Iroquois" confederacy)... "Iroquois" is derived from a rival nation's pejorative (for that matter, 'mohawk' is as well), adapted by the French and later other colonizers. Its use here is akin to naming the Shoshone as the "snake indians". Though it is well recognized perhaps in american pop-culture, as discussed above "iroquois" is also used to represent nations that were not members of the Kanonsonionwe, and not followers of the Kaianerekowa ("great law of peace"). The historical background described in civ 5 properly refers to the people of the Kanonsonionwe and not these other "iroquoiians". The best-fit for Hiawatha's civ name is "Haudenosaunee"

Anyway, if you don't mind, I'd like to reorganize your list a little, using the following structure: names 1-10 as 2 names each from pre-contact/early colonial era of the original 5 nations of the confederacy; 11-22 as 2 names each of the mid-colonial era confederacy that came to include the Tuscarora; 23-40 as a list of the more prominent, late-colonial and contemporary settlements of the confederacy nations, likely weighted most heavily with Seneca & Mohawk settlements (these are/were largest contingents of the confederacy through much of its existence). Thoughts?

Using the improved city list would automatically change the name of the Iroquois civ to "haudenosaunee". That was probably the 1 change that I was most excited about making with this modmod, since it's the one civ name which is basically a racial epithet. Inca is changed to "Tawantinsuyu", and Aztec is changed to "Mexica/Excan Tlatoloyan" as well.

You seem much more up on this stuff than I am, but I definitely think that vanilla was aiming the Iroquois to just refer to the 5/6 Haudenosaunee nations, to the exclusion of the Wyandot and Cherokee. Please feel free to post an alternative city list

@Tekamthi I used Haudenosaunee in previous versions but after your post I will chage it to Kanonsonionwe.
Cannot wait for further work.
Is "Ayenwathaaa" proper transliteration for Hiawatha? Because I also saw this creature: "Haiëñ'wa'tha"

I already renamed ALL base nations. Review please.

Tekamthi, I would 100% agree that Stadacona and Hochelaga would not make sense for a Hiawatha/Confederacy-based city list. The longer, unsorted list, was for Chrisy's Civ 5 iroquois overhaul where the names would be dependent on which band controlled the city (or something to that effect) and my goal was just to document as many potential cities as possible to use, and I don't think Stadacona/Hochelaga actually made it into that mod since (for reasons you described) the St. Lawrence Iroquoians weren't one of the bands he included.

The shorter list I made was originally for a civ 6 mod, which tend to be a bit 'blobbier' than civ 5 and, when making the list, I went back-and-forth on whether or not to include the St. Lawrence Iroquoian cities on the list (Wiki unhelpfully puts both on their 'Iroquois Populated Place' list, which would probably be more accurate using the term 'Iroquoian'). I eventually decided to add them based on a couple reasons including relative prominence and name recognition, shared cultural/linguistic ties, civ6's more 'broad'/'blobby' nature towards civs, references to Mohawk incursions into the St. Lawrence Iroquoian area, and the fact that there was unlikely to be a separate St. Lawrence Iroquoian civ made that would encompass these two cities in particular. That being said, I also understand why one would not want them included in this list, given that it's goal is to be more true to a leader's particular time period/political reality.

In terms of your proposed list layout, that sounds like an excellent way of organizing the cities!

For clarity's sake, "Haudenosaunee" is the collective of people, whereas "Kanonsonnionwe" is the name of the governance structure through which the people organize themselves. Depending on usage, one or the other may be more appropriate, however I think Haudenosaunee actually fits well for general use in civ 5 for various reasons... after all, w/o the people, the governance structure is just an idea. Also, in today's world, many Haudenosaunee identify as such, but have lost their formal places and connections to the Kanonsonnionwe.. the former term is more recognizable than the latter, especially to outsiders

Haudenosaunee is more correct. It means "people of the longhouse". This is how they refer to themselves. The Kanonsonionwe is "the great law of peace", somewhat similar to a constitution.

Agreed, Haudenosaunee is the preferable civ-name for our purposes in civ 5.

For the sake of discussion, "Kanonsonnionwe" is more accurately translated to mean the Haudenosaunee's "government", whereas the "great law of peace" or constitutional law is known as the "Kaianerekowa"... hypothetically speaking, the Haudenosaunee would still be the Haudenosaunee if they followed some other government or adopted some other constitutional fabric

These are just different spellings of the same name, really.. perhaps they are phonetically truer to the original pronunciation, but Hiawatha is a good fit, as it is widely recognized. Similarly you might find "Haudenosaunee" spelled elsewhere as "Rotinoshoni" or some other variation. Contemporary language instructors might argue for one or the other, but ultimately these were not written names originally anyway, and are all bastardizations of some kind as a result.

In a previous post I alluded to geographically based differences within Haudenosaunee culture... to some degree the "correct" spellings will vary with time/place. "Hiawatha" is a somewhat more anglicized version perhaps, though it still suits the leader in civ 5 imo.

Ok, then.

I've added the most solid 5 nations from last @SeelingCat post: Germany (76), Shoshone (37), Maya (59), Russia (54) (with slight renaming of some anglicized names), and awesome Egypt (43) I was about to do by myself. Excellent job on finding old egyptian names!
Moreover I modified and filled the .odt file.
Many small corrections we talked about.
