Alternative Map during 1.18

@Leoreth two minor suggestions
1. Could you please copy over the feature from other RFC mods with provinces where if you hold down ctrl while mousing over a tile, the entire province the tile is from is outlined? I think it would be helpful for goals like Japan's where you need to control a bunch of provinces.
2. I would recommend moving the cow in Ireland 1S so it isn't on the same tile as Dublin

I noticed that France and Viking seem to lack presence in the Near East, despite they leading the first Crusade and establishing Crusader states in history. However, England, Holy Rome, and even Italy all have more historical/conquered area here than France and Viking, which I think seems unreasonable.
I suggest allowing France and the Vikings acquired the territories of the Crusader countries(France should acquired Jerusalem while the Vikings acquired Antioch) as their historical/conquest areas. (conquest area make sense, but I think that historical area may help their long-term existence to simulate Crusader states).
Additionally, considering that later Crusades began targeting Egypt itself, perhaps France and other Europe civilizations could acquire Egypt as their conquest area.

In addition to that, on the old map there's some weird artifact where the Vikings' stability map includes Bordeaux but not actual Normandy (which will almost never be settled, but still).

Overall their stability map should probably look close to this (disregarding the green parts):

Now, if all European civs spawned a bit earlier (like French and Spanish now do), and the Vikings got scripted conquerors...

Would someone be willing to create art for a version of the existing forest varieties with wider spacing, similar to how savanna is spaced? I am thinking of adding this for aesthetic purposes.

Isn't there a New Forest terrain feature from FFH2? Or you mean specifically pine forest?

I am not familiar with that terrain feature in FFH2. There are several mods that have a terrain (I think sometimes called Woodland) similar to what I am thinking of. The general idea is to have an equivalent to the existing, densely packed Forest terrain using the same tree models but more widely spaced, similar to what Savanna looks like. Even if other mods have something like this, DoC now has a unique selection of Forest varieties (snowy, evergreen, mixed, deciduous, mediterranean deciduous, bamboo) and I would like such a counterpart to each of them.

The idea is to add a new feature (let's call it Woodland) using these graphics that is purely aesthetic and has no impact on the yields or other properties of the tile. The way it would be used is that chopping a Forest would create Woodland on the tile rather than removing the feature outright. This way we'd have some visual representation of forested parts of the world left on the map even after it is developed with improvements, rather than just plain empty lands with improvements everywhere.

Here's what it looks like in FfH: left is New Forest, right are the three variants of regular Forest.

It does look a bit too dense to me for DoC, not to mention the lack of variants is a problem. But is this the sort of visual you're talking about?

Yeah in general that is what I had in mind. I think the density is fine, the issue is just that it needs to respect the existence of improvements and leave the center of the tile empty. It does not seem like the FFH feature does this, but I think it's something you can control via the art definitions. And yeah, it would need to exist for all types of foliage in DoC.

If the Germans get stability map that represents their farthest advance during ww2, why don't France, Britain and the USA also have respective maps?
Also, the Napoleonic wars could be represented.

For France, I would suggest adding Spain under historical and Portugal under contested (because it was a British ally).
Fragmented Contested territory could occur rapidly untill Poland, and then more rigidly untill Moscow.

For Britain, I would suggest historical territory over Brittany and Normandy, because it was under British control for so much time and they had British populations.
Then some Contested territory according to ww2.
If it gets messy, then I suggest just using the after war divisions (french, Soviet, American and British).
Russia could maybe get some more contested territory, but I think it's already well represented.

Some other divisions could also be included in Austria and Italy.
USA could get Iceland

I mean, if polish colonization is included, why not ww2 and Napoleonic wars conquests?

Post war map for reference

Speaking of the cores, I think first of all about the stability of AI, taking into account the Netherlands and Portugal with their 5-6 base tiles. But if they just give their colonies independence when collapsing, then everything is fine. And as for the expansion of the empire in breadth, there are "maps of the military activity of countries" for AI.

I mean, all these maps with green, yellow and blue colors are primarily for game rivals to add historicity to the process of colonization. Of course, war is an important process of the game, but the main problem of the computer is that it is not in Total War, but in Civ 4.

This seems like a LOT of Romans... 27 legions and 23 ballistas. I can survive the invasion of Egypt, but when the doomstack arrives there just isn't much I can do.

On the converse, since Arabia only spawned with Archers in Egypt, I was able to rush reconquer Egypt very easily x)

Where do these units come from? Roman invasion event? Or just their regular army?
