if it wasn't for the anti-semetism and junk, Hitler could have got all the ladies

i guess it's that Viennese art schools fault

after all, chicks dig art

so hitler gets into art school = a world where he becomes a not so well known artist, but still a good one, that gets some a lot

i don't know if i would choose that over world domination, but it does get me thinking

I have an unrelated question:how do i edit my signature?

go to the "my account" page, and look on the left side of the screen for something that says "edit my signature"

If you click on my account it should say it on the left toolbar. If it doesn't then you haven't been a member long enough or haven't posted enough. There are numbers on that. Just click the edit avatar and there should be a link to forum rules where it shows how long you have to wait

To Moai. I read that he may have been asexual. Not that he reproduced like an amoeba but that he doesn't like to do "things". Where hetero is attracted to opposite, homo is same, asexual is none.

Election of 1952: The Compromise

Election News

The campaign is looking grim for the Democratic and Republican Parties once again. The Progressive Party, campaigning from the Old Northwest (Minnesota, Michigan area) and giving speeches through New England and the East Coast has gained quite the majority. With promises of no war, increased freedoms, and military strengthening, the Progressive Party has been flourishing in a time recently regarded as the Roaring 50s. Meanwhile General Eisenhower, although initially the frontrunner, has not been succeeding in increasing his supporter base. The two older parties have been very divided, with some either asking for a coalition between the Democratic and Republican Parties, and others leaving to join the Progressive Party.

Eisenhower Regaining Momentum

After a push by the Eisenhower Campaign, capitalizing on the need to save democracy from autocratic nations, and promising strong measures against Mexico and Germany using several methods, Eisenhower is now 6:7 with the Progressive Party.

Hallinan Victory Eminent

Vincent Hallinan, heir to the Wallace legacy and leader of the Progressive Party since Wallace's leaving, is now sure to win election. With an 11:5 lead, Eisenhower has already stopped campaigning to reduce expenses and save up for the 1956 election.

Ballot Mistake!

chap3_img22.jpg

Several states, such as Vermont, Maine, and Illinois has mistakingly counted Averell Harriman's votes as Hallinan's. The two similar last names led to the accident, and a recount has been requested. So far, two of the votes originally designated for Hallinan have gone to Harriman.

Ballot Error Leads to Recount; No Candidate Has 50%

The recent shift in votes has led to no candidate currently holding a majority of the votes. Hallinan, once bragging that he had already won, is now scurrying to re-secure his votes as his count drops from 11 to 8 in only a few days, with Eisenhower trailing behind with 7. A coalition could end the stalemate, however. The Republican Party and Progressive Party are racing to get support of the Democratic Party.

House of Representatives Decides Election

aes16.gif

Becoming the closest election in American history, the House of Representatives had to step in to use (for the first time in American history) their power to give disputed electoral votes. Hallinan, with 8 votes, did not have the majority against the 7 votes of Eisenhower and 2 votes of Harriman. Unresolved, Hallinan called upon the House to end the controversy. The three disputed states were Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina, which consisted of 20 contested electoral votes (With Eisenhower and Hallinan only a dozen apart).

An informal deal, known as the Compromise of 1952, was quickly struck, which awarded all 20 contested electoral votes (1 real from Eisenhower to Hallinan) to Hallinan. In return for the Republicans' acquiescence in Hallinan's election, Hallinan stated he would not pursue the legalization of prostitution, and would increase espionage funding similar to Eisenhower's plan.

Hallinan Gives Victory Speech

After the House of Representatives struck a compromise, Hallinan celebrated his victory by giving a speech in his resident town of Point Place, Wisconsin (as his hometown in California is under Mexican occupation).

Bass1952.jpg

Progressive Party
Vincent Hallinan, Age 56, American lawyer. Promises to uphold Wallace's cultural policies, foreign policy, economic stimulus, and military strengthening. As a lawyer, he fought for union rights and against discrimination towards communists. Will increase the cultural rate, keep the nation at peace while it builds up its military capabilities, stay out of hazardous alliances, aid democratic nations, and create embargoes against the warring, inhumane nations of Mexico and Germany. Wants to legalize prostitution, create facilities for drug rehabilitation, dismiss federal laws on abortion and contraception, and reform prisons. Opposes imperialism.

Republican Party
Dwight D. Eisenhower, Age 62, former general, Secretary of Defense, and Provisional Governor. An ardent internationalist, he wants to focus on strengthening the military, expanding the espionage system, securing American interests and resources, and stopping the spread of autocracy. Wants to prepare for war against Mexico to liberate the American people and stop their religious prosecution. Wants to fight against corruption and harassment against communists, although he is anti-communist himself. Wishes to use both espionage and diplomacy to bring down warring, autocratic nations. He wants to stop nuclear production worldwide. Wants to use small military operations to ensure political balance in Europe. Wants to ally with strong democratic nations, such as Britain, Arabia and Brazil. After the fall of India to Greater Japan, he orated the "Domino Effect", which states that there is a need for military intervention to stop the spread of autocracy.

Democratic Party
W. Averell Harriman, Age 61, Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Nations and the USSR. If at peace, he supports a neutral trade agreement. If at war, he supports small military campaigns to secure American interests and ensure democracy. He therefore proposes to try to amend relations with Mexico, and prepare for small military operations against Japan. He suggests taking Hawaii by amphibious assault, and using the navy to cut off access to Japanese-America while American forces take the cities.

Dropped Candidates

Spoiler :

Republican Party
Robert Taft, Age 62, Ohio Senator. A leader of the conservative Republican wing, he is against internationalism and wants to see a return to isolationism. Stating that the world's politics does not affect America, he would rather see an end to alliances, military intervention, and a focus on neutral, unbiased world trade. Promises the strongest economic policies of any candidate, no war, a strengthening of the defense, and foreign relation improvements. Believes in a small federal government.
Spoiler :
Taft,_Robert_A..jpg

Earl Warren, Age 61, Attorney General, former California politician, and judge during the Foster and Browder Trials. Thinks that Mexican-Americans are the "Achilles Heel" to America, and that a temporary internment for those citizens in the case of war with Mexico is an utmost important action to prevent domestic war. Wants to continue large economic stimulus, an increase of welfare programs, and a continuation of military strengthening. States that communism in America is not a problem, and that anti-communist foreign policy should only be done through diplomatic means.
Spoiler :

Democratic Party
Adlai Stevenson, Age 52, Governor of Illinois. Supports internationalism, and wants to see economic and diplomatic support of democratic neighbors, such as Britain. Does not believe in using military forces for this, however. Against the harassment towards communists. Known to be a great intellectual orator, but having an aristocratic aura. Wants to destroy the nuclear arsenal, and work with the UN to ban them. Wants to continue military strengthening and economic stimulus.
Spoiler :

Estes Kefauver, Age 49, Tennessee Senator and Representative. Believes in reduced federal regulation of the economy. Does not support harassment against communists. Supports consumer protection laws and antitrust legislation. Wants to stop the widespread federal economic stimulus, and instead focus on culture, science research, and military production. Wants to also fight against organized crime, and raise the espionage rate.

What about the two Harriman votes? Or did you just add them to Eisenhower?

Much as I like Ike, I'm gonna go with Hallinan.

I don't know what you're asking, but I doubt I counted them wrong. Again, I do have a vote which makes up one vote. I often switch my vote without commenting on it.
