An update from Firaxis Games regarding Beyond Earth feedback

Ou ou, relax dude, no offense plz. Atleast u finally tell, that biowells aren't useful for a small empires. Im agree with it.

That sounds plausible. There are two kinds of unhappiness; local unhappiness from population, and city unhappiness. Buildings only account for local unhappiness. Biowells can account for both. If you exploit the AI hard enough, you can get enough energy to basically let the AI bonuses fund your mass expansion. This is a supercharged version of what happens in CIV IV and CIV V high settings.

Full disclosure.

I think that that kind of play is stupid and breaks immersion. Milking free money off of a jacked up AI completely undermines the supposed higher difficulty setting. You might as well play a lower setting, because you're not playing an actually more difficult game.

Right now, part of how that happens is through the TRs. That hole should be shut off, but it's really not unusual for players actually looking for a challenge to simply decline to use broken cheaty mechanics. That said, that sort of exploit has existed since CIV IV, so there's some indication that there's a demand for loopholes of that nature. It's one of the reasons I don't like playing with those settings.

Essentially, the Biowells transform the city unhappiness limitation into Civ IV's gold per city limitation, and then you use humongous amounts of free money from the Super-Buffed AI to basically remove the limitation altogether.

Dude's..................

I was so looking for some kind of hint on a release date for the patch, now after wasting half an hour of my life reading snippets of drivel about trade, health, and other strangely irrelevant material with the only tentative connection being wild speculation about inclusion.

Can anyone tell me on which pages of this thread I will find actual info about this patch?

It's possible to maintain Biowells, Academies, and Terrascapes without international Trade Routes* by running Energy Espionage missions, Solar Collectors, and/or having a few Generator cities. It can get dicey near the end of a very fast conquest when having 10 or 20 newly captured cities in resistance ... but it's still doable.

*I definitely am not running any when at war with all the remaining AI!

Definitely not in your post ;)

Thanks for that, much appreciated.

Had hoped there'd be more than just that but I'll just keep waiting for that day Steam says, "No...Wait...There's an update! Woopaaaa!" ;)

Why not both. In a way, G8 countries are doing that. Debt ! It's Role Playing to use financial balance to finance investment to build your nation !

But clearly AI should get more from us when we do that (lowering the Gold-gpt ratio) or using the cash they gain for faster rexing. Maybe developpers should increase the diplomatic malus from rexing even if your aren't rexing into AI's area.

PS: i agree it's like a lower setting, but as far i remember, some were taking undefended workers from AI and using some tricks to play deity aswell no ?

Edit ps 2: Why AIs don't spawn with a colon cash ? Artificial and common way of increasing the difficulty for us. It's really weird in a CIV game at highest difficulty to have more cities than ai (Artist/prosperity opening) turn 25-30.

That's almost irrelevant. By the time you have Organics, Computers, Spy Agency, and Biowells, it's well into the middle of the game, and you're exchanging mass expansion for Academy Game. Each population in Academy Game is getting +6 Science. Without the massive Science and exploit feedbacks you're using, that's pretty hard to beat.

If you've all those including Academies and Terrascapes, that's well into end game - all the factors that allowed you the win are basically over and done with at that point. At that stage, the game gives you multiple ways to just unshackle Health altogether, not just Biowells.

If you want to deride the nature of the conversation going on in the thread, it's probably best not to do so by indulging in an even less topical tangent. (Though of course impossible, since the derision is by definition not topical.)

You know, I have been very patient with Firaxis and the other thieves at 2K... but when I read a statement such as the unapologetic, nonchalant crap in the first post of this thread, I don't see how I can do anything else but decide that Firaxis, 2K, etc... has decided to steal 50$ from me. I will never buy another game that bears the Civilization title, and that sucks because I've played and loved every rendition of the game to date.

Here is what infuriates me:

-The game is UNPLAYABLE for those of us who are forced to either utilize a low resolution with a non-native refresh rate or else play the game in windowed mode. I am not going to accept, "its a workaround". NO IT ISN'T! It is an avoidance of the problem.
-How can it be that such a pervasive problem (losing Firaxis plenty of customers for good) is going to be just lumped into a patch at some unspecified date? What about this does Firaxis not get: WE CANNOT PLAY THE GAME... YOU HAVE STOLEN OUR MONEY... FIX IT IMMEDIATELY
-This means that Firaxis gives the same weight to small UI tweaks and enhancements that it does to an issue which renders the game defective for ~20% of the people who bought it.

Shame on Firaxis and the 'powers that be'. It isn't the money --- I piss away 50$ daily. This is about indifference and fraud on the part of the company. Release the patch whenever you feel like it Firaxis, because you have lost a 15 year patron of the series. GREAT BUSINESS MODEL!!!

In utter disgust and vitriol,

Screw Firaxis

Right, so -

CivV 30 day avg - 28,929
30 day peak - 55,229

CivBE 30 day avg - 15,401
30 day peak - 78,497

Holy crap, BE has lost 45% of players since its opening month... I really hope Firaxis is getting that message, it's pretty loud and clear.

Depressingly, the message appears to be, "We don't want new and inventive games. We want Civ IV is space."

That yet another random person on a game forum is touting their superior knowledge of how to run a game business based solely on information they picked up off of Steam (i.e. with no knowledge of Firaxis' expectations for the game)?

Running around various game fan sites, you can readily determine that every single game that has been published/updated in the past year is terrible and is hemorrhaging players and spells certain doom for the company. Some of those games have been spelling doom for the company for five or more years, which is pretty spectacular track record for spelling doom.

Should Firaxis consult Nintendo on how to be DOOOOMED!? I hear they're pretty good at it.

LOL. Where did I say I had superior knowledge of how to run a game business, exactly? I don't need to know the ins and outs of game publishing to tell that when 45% of the people who try your game drop it within a month, you're doing something wrong.

I'd guess that something would be releasing a game that is filled with bugs that a handful of spare-time modders have already been able to fix, or creating a game that has a joke AI and no viable multiplayer setting. But you know, I'm just some whiny fan on a forum somewhere, right? And all those kids complaining about Halo not having MP, or Assassin's Creed having see-through character models, they just have "no knowledge of [the developers] expectations for the game", right?

If you think so little of fan opinions, why are you reading CF at all? There's lots of places you could go stick your head in the sand and be happy about buggy half-finished games, without having to listen to all us unenlightened folk expecting more out of the games we love.

It was not be avoided that BE would get at least three expectations that would be hard to follow up and impossible to combine

- Some were diasappointed in CiV and wanted the series back towards the prevous Civs (mostly Civ4).
- Some loved SMAC and how the narrative focus and lore was awesome (much better than the game mechanics, one may add)
- Some loved CiV and expected BE, in content and polish, to be a step forward from BNW.

Personally I like how affinities are implemented and balanced, the seeding options are good, the quest system is interesting, the tech web is great, espionage works well, satellites are a good concept etc.

But I would like TRs to matter less, slower game pace, stations must be boosted and expanded, the possibility to win the game by chance must be removed, more health penalties, have the level 4 affinity units nerfed and have a couple of the quests better balanced. Also the hardest diff levels must actually be hard, no wonder people stop playing SP when the AI won't put up any challenge.

That's not wanting back to Civ4, but rather making an enjoyable game with its own mechanics.
