Oh, well.

The first era is meant to represent the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the first civilizations on the globe, and AFAIK, a predecessor to the Hindu civilizations of India (and their architecture).
They look very like the computer reconstruction I've seen. And the rooftop canopies are an especially nice touch. Many Indians sleep on rooftops during warm weather to this day.

I'm glad to hear that :)
Would you have any suggestions for the next era?

Those three post's worth of galleries I posted were scaled down by ImageShack, losing a lot of detail. so I redid the jpegs with enough compression that they now expand to much larger, more detailed images.

I'm glad to hear that :)

Khmer like buildings! Thats all I've got to say right Blue Monkey?
I think SoG's referring to some graphics he gave me a while back for cut and pasting into a SE Asian temple. Could you put them here for RedAlert to see? Some of those might be useful for making cities, although I'd probably use them in Eras 3-4.

Since it takes me anywhere from 10-40 hours of work to assemble one of the galleries I've just given you links to lots of images this time:

Era 2: If possible I'd change the predominant color to the reddish stone you see in a lot of the images I've posted. Simple versions of the tiered roofs like in some of the temple images I've posted should appear. Maybe look to early Chola for some inspiration as to domes and barrel-vaulted roofs. In the larger sizes could you include an open space with a simple tank? Indians really went in for urban parkland (Buddha was enlightened under a tree and gave his first public talk in a deer park); it'd be nice to see a tree here or there.

Era 3: More ornate buildings, and more color variation (maybe keeping to reds, browns, yellows, whites). Start to introduce some of the Chola/Tamil/Southern style architecture. That's the images with the really gaudily painted temples. This temple complex may give you some ideas for city layout.

Era 4: The Varanasi images in my Cityscapes gallery (lots of buildings that look like steeples on a riverbank). Look at Hoysala and Vijayanagar architecture. And lots of color variations between buildings (get the rainbow going). Check out Varadarajaperumal Temple (especially the structure with four tall pillars + roof).

For all eras look at the new Forts gallery to get ideas for city walls.

EDIT: I'm not sure it would work at this scale, but a shivalingam in an open spot would be nice in an Era 2 city. Another idea for Era 3 is to include a proclamation pillar (like Asoka's famous lion-topped one that is the national emblem of India).

Here Redalert use these:

You should also take a look at what Aion was working on before he disappeared from these forums. Although his works don't have color, he did have the basic shapes down.

:) What would I do without you guys?

@Ogedei_the_Mad - Good thinking. I've now pilfered some useful images posted by Blue Monkey and Aion on that thread.

@Sword_Of_Geddon - Those are lovely! Thankyou.
Edit: Congrats on 8,888 posts! I guess it's not really anything too special, but I like nifty numbers like that. :crazyeye:

@Blue Monkey - Thanks for keeping me pointed in the right direction. Your assistance has been invaluable.
Would you happen to be able to inform me what a regular everyday house looked like back then? (i.e. nothing too sophisticated).

If you look at the "Cityscapes" gallery you'll see several images of individual houses (some of which look thatched with sticks) and "ghetto" and village street scenes that should give you a fair idea. Or else get Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour and look at the chapter set in India. Seriously. They visit a ghetto occupied by a caste of street performers; there's lots of good scenes of the homes.

How does this look for era two?

I actually meant to have this posted yesterday, but I got a bit caught up watching Almost Famous and The New Guy ;)

The building shapes all look really good; the color scheme is also good. It does look just a little too pixelated compared to era one (I can't help saying that I'm trying to avoid saying (:mischief:) that the stripey effect made me think of Legos).

Reminds me of my pixel-by-pixel days as well. :D Maybe it can use a little blurring to give it a less lego-like effect. :)

Don't take offense Red, they're really good and could pass as they are... but there is just that slight lego look.

I hope it's clear I intended no offense. I truly appreciate the amount of effort you're putting into this project.

I didn't mean for him not to take offense at what you were saying Blue. Sorry if it came out that way. The main reason I put it was because I had the lol at the begining but then decided against it.
