Another verdict on waterboading: it's torture.

No, the premise is being made here in this thread that it may not damage someone physically, but rather mentally. I am merely asking...where's the damage?

Did it, for instance, scare Hitchens into becoming a christian and believe in God? :p

No?

/meh, maybe he wasnt as traumatized as you think.

It scared him into believing waterboarding is torture....

Does torture have to have lasting effect?

I would say yes, either physically or mentally. Otherwise its not very torturous.

The better suffocation analogy was if I was holding a pillow over your head. You make waterboarding sound like a recreatonal sport.

Watch Jackass much? They make a lot of things look like a recreational sport.

Again, why is a scar necessary for it to be torture?

Its indicative that you were actually 'tortured'.

How are those any different from an exfoliating scrub, playing with matches, masturbation, and a manicure?

They all have a lasting physical and mental effect on the person. Glad I could educate you there.

Again, if merely 'scaring' someone is torture, then why are those tv shows thats 'scare' people for your entertainment allowed?

No concept of the idea of "consent." Just none whatsoever.

"Thou shalt not covet." (Romans 13:9, lots of others)
"Covet earnestly the best gifts." (1 Corinthians 12:31)

Oh look, a contradiction! Quit being a word-twisting literalist.

(source, btw)

You do not think it is possible to inflict torture level pain or fear in a way that won't leave a scar?

Yeah. I thionk one of those guys went on to become AG.

I've never been tortured, yet I have a scar to prove that I was.

And they are all items where a third party is doing inflicting, unlike your holding-your-own-breath hypo.

Do you know the medical procedures after conducting a waterboarding? They call a waaaaaambulance.

What twisting? I used the same word in the same context as he did. :crazyeye:

Mobbie, I take it you missed the part about him signing a disclaimer because of the risk of the procedure killing him?

Isnt that what makes torture 'torture' and not a rough exfoliating scrub?

/shrug. People die from riding roller coasters too cause its scary. But its not torture.

No. What makes torture torture is that it is an extremely unpleasant and dangerous experience that you have no control over.

Oh, by the way, the Gestapo and KGB had a nice line in non-invasive torture; sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation, psychological torture.

Congratulations on being morally on par with the Stasi, America.

So if waterboarding is not torture, I am sure you are all perfectly OK with waterboarding being used against US personnel?

Anyone who doesn't think it's torture should send their children to Gitmo and let it be done to them.

Anyone who doesn't think it's torture should be happy to demonstrate the same amount of moral fortitude that Hitchens has. I'm certainly not going to be paying any attention to their drivel otherwise.
