What leads you to believe that these regimes came to power "peacefully"? That most of them did so without a protected civil war as in Spain does not imply that they were bloodless.These regimes were in crisis, and the elite turn to authoritarian rule, fascist or otherwise, represented a last ditch attempt to preserve their power. Weimar Germany would not have been magically transformed into a healthy liberal democracy if the Communists decided to abide by liberal norms. And we know this, because Communists in Spain, France and elsewhere did this during the "Popular Front" period, and fascism or elite support for fascism didn't simply dissipate.

Weimar Germany might have had more chance if the Communists hadn't spent the 20s attacking the socialists rather than the fascists. Their conversion to the Popular Front came too late and they weren't trusted by those they belatedly tried to ally.

Do the socialists not therefore bear some responsibility for poisoning that well? Is it reasonable to have your political enemies murdered, and then expect there friends to play by the rules you have decided will henceforth apply? Or would you not agree that this would tend to spoil the game before it starts?

What is striking about the Weimar Republic is not that it lasted only twelve yeasrs, but that it endured for so long. That a regime built with the use of death squads should limp to the decade mark with the trappings if not quite the substance of electoral democracy intact is a greater surprise than the discovery that the death squads weren't content with a supporting role. Blaming that on a party which never won more than a sixth of the popular vote seems, at best, a reading made with the benefit of hindsight.

I never blamed the fall of the Weimar republic and rise of the Nazis solely on the Communists. Their tactics during that period were unsuccessful and counterproductive however.

I'm curious whether you recognize the conflict in these two statements. I'm quite comfortable with the second one. People who in any way shape or form present as willing to use violence I will meet head on with violence, quite likely beyond their wildest imagination. If they don't want it, don't bring it. But that position leaves absolutely no room for a generality like "violence is unacceptable."
