Are fitness freaks wasting their time?

Does going to a gym expend more time than you gain?

It has occurred to me, that those Muscle Marys, and Gym Bunnies, actually spend more time trying to get fit, than the hours gained back by being fit.

Anyone else agree?

If they're working out just to extend their lives by an unknowable amount, then maybe. If they exercise for fun, then it's worth it.

As long as they enjoy it it's not a waste of time. In terms of statistically extending life, some time spent exercising is without doubt a good investment but yeah, I don't think the people who spend 6 hours a day at the gym are going to get that much back out of it.

I'm not trying to live longer, I'm trying to live better. I enjoy time at the gym.

I dunno if this can be measured in purely quantitative terms. Fitness enthusiasts may expend more time on their lifestyle than it adds to their life, but there's also a good chance that much of the intervening time is of higher quality. I don't know if we can reasonably generalise.

Yeah, I know at least for myself I'm a big fan of being able to do the kind of stuff I wouldn't have been able to do if I didn't spend at least a couple of hours per week working out.

But listen the thread title is about "fitness freaks". People who work out a few hours a week aren't what is being discussed. We're talking about the people who treat going to the gym as a full time job, people who are there for hours and hours every day. I don't think anyone can reasonably deny that exercising at least a few hours a week is a good idea, there's not a lot of room for discussion there.

If they enjoy it, why not?

It's their free time, they can spend it making mac n cheese, gardening, going for a hike, walking their dog, going swimming, working out, or whatever.

Personally I'm all for moderation and a good balance between different types of activities in your life, but.. if they are truly enjoying the time spent in the gym, what's wrong with that? I think you are under the impression that working out is a chore.. To a lot of people it is, but some actually enjoy the activity. To those people I say - all the power to ya! Unless they start looking like freaks, then I'd agree with you a bit.

As if full time jobs aren't usually a waste of time to begin with? :p

The more exercise I do, the more I can eat without getting fat, and the better I look in tight t-shirts and jeans.

Healthwise, you run into diminishing returns and there's a point beyond which there's little point in spending any more time working out unless 1) it's the only thing you want to be spending your time on, or 2) you actually want to be seriously competitive in some sport.

Considering how many ways there are to get fit and healthy while at the same time, have heaps of fun (skiing, surfing, playing sport...the list is endless) to spend an inordinate amount of time in the gym seems to be a waste of time.

This.

And this.

To be fair it often seems like a waste of time, considering I don't look good in tight t-shirts or skinny jeans.

Excess is always counter-productive.
But as others have said, spending time at the gym as a rule will give you far more benefits than consume time. You can be extremely fit with just a little over an hour per day, 5 days a week. That's not a lot, and you'll be healthier, feel better, sleep better, be physically strong and more attractive. A great deal if you ask me.

It is their time to waste, and frankly if they are enjoying it how can you call it a waste? Is going to see a movie a waste of time? Is going out to dinner a waste of time? Is washing your car every weekend whether it needs it or not a waste of time? Is posting on an internet forum dedicated to a game a waste of time?
