Are hackers a force in society today?

I'd be very surprised if they manage to take down Facebook. The whole Denial of Service attack isn't even hacking, it's like throwing a brick through a door and then saying that you picked the lock. Also as long as you have decent security in place and network redundancy DoS attacks aren't much of a concern. Considering Facebook is huge the chances of it going down is marginal.

What the heck is the point of all these stupid little stunts they pull?
How many people are actually for them taking down facebook?

They sound just like a bunch of bratty kids, which is probably what they are.

These days hacking is a lot more mainstream than the stereotypical basement dwelling twenty something year old who still lives in their parents house. That said when your main method of attack is a denial of service the script kiddie analogy seems particuarly apt. My guess is that a bunch of people who visit /b/ too much think that they're doing something meaningful by getting on a lot of peoples nerves.

Yeah, defending free speech and privacy by taking down Facebook -- right.

Ugh, there is no SUCH THING AS ANONYMOUS! Anonymous is not a group, it is nothing more than a bunch of unaffiliated people on the internet.

They're obviously affiliated by this "Anonymous" banner they collectively put themselves under.
