Riesstiu sounds Finnish to me.

Me: white male. Where I come from racism is not the problem, ignorance is.

I'm really not sure what Finnish names sound like. Riesstiu comes from the PC game Homeworld.

I am very much a minority. I am of Iranian origin (born and raised in Iran untill the age of 15) and have been in the U.S. of A for almost 12 years now. some people think i am white, some think i am greek/ italian, some think i am from south America, and since i don't really have an accent (it comes out with a Guiness or two;) ) most people can't guess what i really am. here in Los Angeles, however, which hosts the largest Iranian Community outside of Iran, most people can tell what I am.

I have been subjected to some incidents of racism/discrimination, but honestly it hasn't been much. People in California are used to "foreigners", although some will always be prejudiced no matter what. the most classic example is when you meet some one, and after a few laughs, and mundane comment about the weather and what not, they ask you "so....where are you from?". after a brief pause (since i dont know what to really answer), I say Iran, and thus the classic look on their face, surprised silence, disappointment, horror?? (which they try to hide with a painful nervous smile) and then nothing, as if we have not met, or they dont have anything else to say. ;)

Oh...my...God!

Please, let's us white males stop the bull before it gets spread too far, okay? We're not freaking oppressed and the very idea that we are, unless you live under the rule of Robert Mugabe, is just ludicrous.

Yes, there may be some rather inane 'reverse-discrimination' rules currently in place, and so forth, but that hardly can be used as a reason to scream oppression.

In England I' ve only been to London, but I must say that my short experience there was very different from what you' re saying. I saw as many blacks and other minorities as I see in Rio.
Where did you go?
Brixton has a very black population.
Oxford Street however.....tourists and mostly whites.

I visited the major touristical attractions. London did seem to me the most diverse city in Europe.

I did see some hints of segragation, though. I remember that in the British Museum there were alot of school expeditions where the entire class was of the same ethnic group. Some were all-black, others were all-asian or all-white. I found this very odd.

As a gay man in America, I'm pretty much the only minority it's "okay" to discriminate against. Thankfully, I'm nowhere near obviously gay, and the only people who know are those I tell. It hasn't presented a problem for me at work because of this, and that's really the only place I could run into serious problems anyway. All of my friends outside work (And a couple at work) know.
Aside from being unable to marry, as a minority I have it no different than any other white male in the country.

Wow, I've never even come close to what Ram's experienced. I mean, I'm one of I think 6 - 7 Indians in my school, but even when I lived in a bigger city in which I was the only one I never got any remarks. Neither did my mother or father in the US. Once there was a kid that tried to make a racist comment but couldn't think of anything clever, and I seriously considered making fun of him for being Puerto Rican. Luckily I withheld. Then again, different times, different place, and there is a 12% Asian minority, which is big.

I'm white, so not really. But I'm part of the Oppressed Majority. :p

Hear hear!

As someone who lives in a society that is the most mixed of anywhere in the world, it's still blatant even here that white people experience almost no discrimination and certainly have more advantages than anyone else.

I think you guys are taking our comments too seriously.

All joking aside though, these days I see far more racism against whites than racism against any other ethnic group, even if it's not always obvious. I am a Haoli in Hawaii though, so perhaps I have a slightly different perspective than a Canadian.

The racism that whites experience (In the US at least) mostly comes in the form of accusations of being racist. Often if you're white, white and male, or especially white male and rich, you become demonized as such. Accusations from the left that Republicans are all rich white men, accusations from extremist minorities or minority groups that all whites are trying to "hold them back," and so on. Afirmative Action fuels the fires as well, causing many whites (especially men) to feel singled out. And, of course, anyone who speaks out against AA is automatically labeled racist by anyone who supports it.
There's very little in the way of genuine discrimination that can be placed upon whites, simply because there's still more of us here than any other ethnic group. But we, just like anyone else, can indeed be on the recieving end of racism. It's just far rarer than some would lead us to believe.

London is indeed very diverse, and thats why I like it:)

Those scool classes were probably from pacific areas, chances are that the 'all white' classes were from outside London whilst the others form different parts of London.

Only at work, where I'm the only nativeborn white non-Hispanic person in the whole 80-person department. Ok, I lie, there's one other, but we hate each other. :)

More seriously, no, I'm about as far from a minority as you can get, especially where I live now -- ancestors of mine make up one whole column on the Veterans of the Revolution plaque at the local post office.

Raisio, Raita, Riku, Risku, Risto, Riutta, Ruotsi.

Shake hard to blend them and whammo you've got Riesstiu. Or maybe not... ;)

Yes, I'm in the minority, being Tamil and living in Kent. No real interesting experiences, apart from the occasional racist abuse, but thankfully that doesn't happen that often.

Well, it never sounded like aFinnish name to me.
So I'd stick with maybe not.
