The only problem with vinyl is that you're damaging your record a little bit each time you listen to it. That's really sad.

Bozo, you didn't answer the question about listening to music while driving

I have the 60 gig iPod and its nearly full.

I love it. I have my entire ~1000 CD collection on there (backed up a couple places as well). Its made my life a lot easier. I'm completely CD-free. So, w/ 3 kids, that means: no more broken CDs, no more lost CDs, no more deciding which CDs to bring on a trip, etc.... I just grab the iPod and go. I use it at home and at work.

I next plan to start watching DVDs off of it.

The whole anti-Apple thing is a bit stupid to me. If its not for you, that's fine. There's lots of choices out there, but the hate is... weird.

Im sorry I should have been more explicit: I only like listening to music while drunk driving.

Yeah, well I am from the old skool. Much of it is about the fact I've got that rare piece of vinyl in my possession for starters. Vinyl remains a work of art to have and hold in the first place, giving something that an mp3 could never give. I find mp3s to be real throw away, insignificant artefacts. The act of getting a record out makes it a more special experience than a click for an mp3.

True

Then there's the whole question of using software to mix a set, and it stinks of 'cheating'.

Very true

There's also compatability with bars and clubs. Even trying to play with CDs at most places is a pain in the bum. Everywhere has two turntables and they still do the job admirably.

True cd's are a hassle, but with laptops you just jack em into the mixer. 100% zero hassle.

I would never buy an iPod (don't need one, Apple is a big corporation, etc.) Unfortunately, it just so happens that I won one in some raffle contest about a year ago. I decided that since I won it, not using it isn't really helping my cause, it's not like I actually purchased it. I basically use it for my news podcasts, like CNN and such, and a couple humor ones, like the Onion. I also have some aboriginal music that I picked up for free in Australia that's on there. Too be honest I'm thinking of getting rid of it, it seems rather hypocrtitical for me to have one.

Yes I'm really aware of this every time I lug in a heavy crate or bag of records. But it's all worth the effort to see that black wax spin  It's also a real pleasure holding up a great record to the crowd after you've played it.

Just out of curiosity, when you go to a club or bar are you more into the guy who's bringing out the vinyl, or the guy who's pushing buttons behind a screen? (let's just say they're playing the same set) I personally find I connect with the guy bringing out the records, but that might just be me.

No IPod, no MP3 Player. I'm free as the wind.

My Nano for the win!

I need my nano to survive during my breaks during school.

I don't even own an iPod.

And I only listen to music that I can't understand. (numbered in 10 songs total)

I'm not a "pod-head" as I'm not stupid enough to over pay for an MP3 player, and sign up to some service that doesn't even provide MP3's, but rather some proprietary format crap.

I do have an MP3 player though. It's nice not having to worry about having a bunch of CD's in my car.

To be honest I only really pay attention to the DJ if its a friend (and then generally with an eye to how to get out of shifting the speakers at the end). Otherwise I only notice the DJ if they are exceptionally good or bad, thier medium of choice just not being a factor.

I have a cheap iPod shuffle. And before anyone goes ranting on me about being an Apple-slave or teenage raver I only have 23 songs on it and primarily use it for writing, as listening to soundtracks helps inspire me. iPods are far more convenient than CDs.

So yes, I do own an iPod, and I enjoy it very much. But I don't store 20K songs or babble all the time about the latest rock idol like some people I know from my youth group.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Given the storage space, iPods are reasonably priced.

They play MP3s natively and will rip the MP3 format with a simple setting change.

As for purchasing music, I do believe they are in the proprietary format, but I could be wrong. Either way, they're not hard to convert to mp3. But, no one forces you to buy music from Apple and, unfortunately, it seems all online sellers use proprietary formats.

You're actually right about the prices. Just looked it up, and Ipods have come down in price, so I was incorrect. :goodjob:

I do use itunes because I like the UI, but if there is something better (and open source) I would be more than happy to use it.

I wont own an ipod because most of my music is in ogg vorbis (it preserves the warmth of strings so much better) but I am going to FLAC soon (as peeps in the chatroom will tell you, I can't stand songs encoded at 160 kbps or less). Both formats itunes and ipods dont natively support.
