Are You Ready For No Hank Williams Jr. Starting Monday Night Football Games?

Huh? You won't forgive the DC but in the same breath you say who cares what H2 or H3 says?

Why does it matter if one said it in concert in England (or whatever country) or on a heavily partisan morning talk show?
Because you don't air your dirty laundry to strangers. It just rubs me totally wrong and I disapprove of that big time. Like I said, Linda Ronstadt did basically the same thing as the Dixie Chicks, and I am fine with her. Why? She did it in the States.

What Hank Jr said was stupid as hell, and I've no issue with ESPN yanking his song. Their show, their call (and frankly I like the 80s tune better anyway... forma's link to it was a nostalgia rush for me.) But at least he said it in America and not overseas to foreigners.

Except that this isn't 1890. If you say it in Britain it is heard everywhere. Last time I checked Fox was also broadcast outside the US and was available online.

I think your standard is archaic and a bit nit-picky, but I love you anyway. Keep enjoying your ACLU spam! (I lol'd at the PM you sent me, sorry for not replying sooner)

Yeah, it's kind of silly. It's like the NFL thinks it's still the 60's, and football fans are old school country fans.

Move into the 21st century NFL.

How come our little competition at the end of the earth gets Jon Bon Jovi and Tina Turner to do our promo songs , and the massive NFL has Hank Williams Jnr ?

We get the big rock stars to play for us. :smug: We had Meat Loaf play at the AFL grand final.

The NFL is living in the past. Look at the Super Bowl half-time shows they give us.

Not to defend anyone here but this is taken out of context. He was simply comparing Obama and Boehner golfing to something equally absurd. They're enemies, that is his point.

He actually said that Obama was the enemy.

Enemies? They share a responisbilty for making sure our country stays on the right path. They may have some disagreement on the course of action to take, but there is a degree of overlap of what they agree on.

Seriously, HW2 was just hitting his stride when meatloaf was starting to become a has been.

I'd rather hear Hank sing "Are You Ready For Some NASCAAAARRRRRR!!!"

And Monday Night Football can play a recording of Frank Zappa singing "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" before the show starts.

It's official now, ESPN fired him, or he quit. Depends on who you believe.
ESPN said:
“We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of ‘Monday Night Football’ has always been about the games, and that will continue.”

“After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made my decision. By pulling my opening Oct. 3, you (ESPN) stepped on the toes of the First Amendment freedom of speech, so therefore me, my song and all my rowdy friends are out of here. It’s been a great run.”

Last time I checked, the 1st Amendment did not give a has been the right to have his song played as an intro to a game on ESPN.

They used to be more or less in sync with "stuff people actually listened to", but then that godawful Pats-Panthers Super Bowl happened. At least they kind of tried semi-recent stuff with the Black Eyed Peas last year.

The First Amendment protects against an employer from firing a bigot for his remarks made in front of an audience of perhaps a million people, and later seen by hundreds of millions? I had no idea that Hank Jr. was such an advocate of non-original interpretation. And I'm sure he and all his "rowdy friends" will now stop watching NFL football on ESPN as a result.

He probably belongs to one of those Hollywood unions.
