What are some of the lesson we can learn from the Asian Tsunami crisis?

I'll reply of what I think are some of the lessons that we could learn after some posts by others and when I come back from work tomorrow.

The mindless, random shifting of some rocks at the bottom of the ocean can lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

That there is no doubt that nature is the grand leveller.

Our puny nations are swept asunder whenever the elements please.

...

That people in general can behave as though they care about one another?

But there really is no way to determine whether this is genuine, or gulilt-driven, or the herd mentality, or selfish, or any of a number of other things.

That we still have a long way to go before we human beings can claim to have mastered this world.

That maybe less is better after all. The indigenous tribes in the Nicobar islands, isolated from the rest of humanity and possessing near Stone Age technology, actually made it through unscratched while more "civilized" people suffered horrendous casualties.

That there is good in man after all, as evidenced by the massive outpouring of aid from everywhere after the incident.

That there is evil always present as well, as shown by the instances of looting, rape, children being kidnapped, caste discrimination even in the face of such a calamity, etc.

I was most impressed by the private donations from Europe and the US/Canada.

What he said.

Fortunately, in the future, we will be able to better predict and combat nature. My guess, though, is that we'll leave this planet before we master the elements.

Don't build nuclear plants on the coast, or on a fault line.

Don't keep unrenovated 60-year old plants around.

My understanding is early warning systems put in place after the Asian tsunami were quite helpful.

Jesus, the Asian Tsunami was over 6 years ago.

Perf is getting old.

That we definitely shouldn't build power plants in a region low enough a wave could damage it. A country rocked by earthquakes as much as Japan obviously is also at high risk for tsunamis, so power plants should definitely be moved inland.

That's how history works though; we don't take safety precautions until AFTER a disaster like this occurs. Titanic, Fire of London, etc.

I find drugs to either stop you from storing anything in your long-term memory, or from recalling anything from the long-term, help.
I know, but I never can remember to take them.
