Ask a Turk

Question for a Turkish person:

How does it make you feel when looking at the map and seeing how much bigger Turkey is than poor Greece?

Ankara is planned and built from scratch as a capital, so it has better infrastructure for the job....well at least it used to be until a few years ago. Now the mayor (who thinks he is the king/sultan/pharaoh) keeps screwing with the city's transportation system. I am a civil engineer, and I haven't met a single civil engineer or city planner that does not think the mayor is destroying the city with his weirdo projects without expert guidance.

The modern capital may be planned, but Ankara (as far as I know) is the Turkish name for Ankyra, the name of the original ancient city, in medieval times also known as Angora.

edit: There is a historical/emotional component too. Ankara was where Turkish nation made its stand. The longest pitched battle in World history was for the defense of Ankara.

I'm curious as to which battle you're referring to. (I've studied history, though not Turkish history specifically.)

I heard somewhere that converting from Islam to Christanity is illegal in Turkey and you can go to jail for it. Is this true?

Battle of the Sakkaria River, which isn't technically Ankara. Also, the importance of it for the 'survival of the Turkish nation' is vastly overrated; it was more of a struggle to see which group, Turks or Greeks, would get genocided along the Aegean coastline of Anatolia. Had the Greeks won, there was no way in hell that they were going to be able to grab more than northwestern and Aegean littoral regions of Anatolia.

Thanks. (Though I was actually curious as to a Turkish response.) I found it occurred in 1923; I thought it might have been an earlier battle I hadn't heard of.

According to the sharia, or islamic religious law, it is a mortal sin. Turkey is a secular country - unlike Saudi Arabia or Iran - so the answer should be no.

arkadaş, could you sum up the mistakes done by the German gouvernment and the society that leads to (more or less) alienating the Turkish migrants adn their offsprings especcially?

Take natural coal, a filter and blow the smoke out of the shisha from time to time so that no carbon monoxide gathers inside the pipe.

Our country is very big.:)And Greece is too small if to make a comparison. It makes me feel proud of my country. But im worried about the last events in our country.Im worried about my countries future.
I pray God.I hope Turkey's end will not be similar to Ottoman's or other Turkish countries.

No its completely wrong.Christianity is a right for people in our country.Turkey is a secular country for now (although our government tries to build a nonsecular regime.)
If to ask my idea about it,every person has a right to choose his own belief.Noone has the right to interfere it.Its something between humans and God.

Majority do believe we are gonna enter one way or another (probably by being second in the group stage), the rest think that we will not qualify thanks to stupid moves by Terim.

Turkish people generally look at the map and see how much bigger Russia is than
Turkey. and feel sad thinking how big we were once. but then cheer up suddenly
by looking at the Italy since our peninsula is much bigger. :)

But we should know that the only person who can get our national team through World Cup is,FATIH TERIM.Whatever he does,he is the emperor of our country.:)

Well, once you were bigger than Russia:lol:

BTW, a question, how do you view Russia?

Well, after late 90s many russians came to Turkey first to trade and now for tourism. Since then many people interacted with them and we seem to love em.
They quickly become the second largest group of tourists after germans and we appriciate that a lot.

Turkish men's weaknesses for blondes also resulted in many marriages which are especially common in the region Turkish Riviera (Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum etc..)

They in return sell us gas at the highest price and made quiet a lot of money and there exist a huge trade imbalance in favor of Russia.

For negative points: some russian dudes who doesn't know Turkey or Turks, are by default pro-Greek anti-Turk just because they think they should side with Orthodox people.

To sum up, Russia and Russians has a rising good image at the Turks' eyes. I hope our leaders don't do stupid things to mess this.
