Ask an Israel-American

Once again, heavily biased. But I'd like to add the fact that there are a multitude of Muslim countries, but only one Jewish state.

would you accept one state solution with a secular and democratic palestine/israel/[enter new countr name here] where jews and arabs have same rights.

I would like a state where Palestinians and Israelis have equal rights, though the country maintains it's Jewish status. The State of Israel was created to insure there would never be another Holocaust.

Do you think there would be another Holocaust if Israel did not maintain its Jewish status?

how do you think israel can prevent a genocide in Europe?

and how well do you think your views represent an ordinary Jew in US?

What do you think about the Fatah-led campaign for diplomatic recognition of the State of Palestine, and the Israeli response (eg cutting funds, increasing settlement construction) which weakens Fatah and strengthens Hamas?

What do you think of Israel diplomacy in recent years? Cast Lead pissed off Europe, Your PM basically told American president to sod off when he didn't renew the moratorium on expansion of West bank settlements, and the Israel support for old regimes during the Arab spring could be also described as unwise. It makes for someone who considered himself a moderate Israel supporter harder and harder to defend Israel actions. In fact, I stopped defending Israel long time ago. Isn't current head of Israel diplomacy bigger danger to Israel than Iranian nuclear scientists?

Doesn't the term "Jewish state" have racist connotation?

I say two-state solution in a perfect world, but with Hamas, I don't think it's an option. So maybe Israel in control, with more Palestinian rights?

So where would the borders be?

I don't want to offend anyone, but yes, the Heradim (Ultra-Ultra Orthodox Jews) are a pain. Instead of working, they study holy books all day and have oodles and oodles of kids, who in turn, will live off government tax money and have more kids. They also are exempt from military service, though a large number of them have recently grown a National Fervor and joined the army/entered politics, which is bad news for left-wingers since they are SUPER right-wing.
:

Why do you think they are now joining the army.

do you think mainstream media in US is biased about israel, or they're objective and israel is right objectively.

I think biased, mostly because of the large amount ofJews in the media and the American bias against terrorism and "Islamaphobia"

Do you think there would be another Holocaust if Israel did not maintain its Jewish status?

Hmm, I misspoke. I don't mean prevent, I mean save as many Jews as possible. During WWII, thousands of Jews attempted to enter Palestine to run away from the Nazis. The British kicked them out and sent them back to the furnaces of Auschwitz and Poland. If there was a place that was safe for Jews, there would be many mow today. Even America, a "bastion of freedom" didn't let the Jews in. They only took the ones they thought were useful (most famously Albert Einstein, a Jewish German). If Israel failed to maintain it's Jewish status, and let's say Michelle Bachmann became President for Life and started a second Holocaust, I think that Israel/Palestine might not take in the millions of American Jews. Just my thoughts.

and how well do you think your views represent an ordinary Jew in US?

I think my views, as a secular Jew, are more or less aligned with the average American Jew. There are of course radicals and fanatic Jews, but more or less US Jews love Israel, and support it.

What do you think about the Fatah-led campaign for diplomatic recognition of the State of Palestine, and the Israeli response (eg cutting funds, increasing settlement construction) which weakens Fatah and strengthens Hamas?

I am 100% AGAINST settlements. I think the only job they accomplish is widening the gap between Israel and Palestine. As I said, I have a friend who lives in the West Bank and their excuse is that it is cheaper to live there than in Jerusalem (they commute to Jerusalem every morning). It saddens me that Israeli soldiers lose their lives protecting these settlements, just because "it said in the Torah that it's ours" or "it's cheaper".

I think that Fatah's plan is rather obnoxious and they are trying to circumvent the Peace Process. In my opinion, if Palestine became a de facto country, there would be a war. I also don't like Israel's response at all. The whole situation annoys me. And there is nothing we can do to stop Hamas' growth. With the recent prisoner swap between us and Hamas, they have gained more and more prestige among Palestinians, while Fatah appears weak by not succeeding in the UN.

What do you mean by "Jewish state"?

A state who's national religion is Judaism, and a state for Jews.

As I said before, I don't always support everything Israel does. For example, the flotilla incident could have been managed a lot more maturely. And yes, it is hard to defend Israeli diplomacy and yes, it is sometimes very hypocritical. Our country is known as an aid country that delivers humanitarian aid to other places during disasters, such as Turkey, Haiti, or Japan, yet at the same time, Israel has been accused of apartheid. It is very hard to see where one can draw the line.

Doesn't the term "Jewish state" have racist connotation?

No, why? Let me make something clear to everyone: Judaism is not a race, it is a religion. Yes many of us share some traits (dark hair, odd noses) but those of us who have these traits are mostly from Eastern Europe, where they are common to most Eastern Europeans! Jews were only made a race by Adolf Hitler. In my opinion, calling Jews a race is in a way agreeing with Hitler. And how is a Jewish state racist? Officially, England is a Christian state. Is that racist? There are Israeli-Arabs in the Knesset (Congress). Many talk of our flag, who's Star of David isolates the many Muslims and Christians of Israel. Take a look at ANY Nordic or Arab flag and come back to me. Crosses and Moons galore. No, a Jewish State is not racist.

So where would the borders be?

This is a tough question and I am not qualified to answer it. I can say, however, the 1967 borders don't work any more. There are now many Arab villages in what is considered Israel, some of which don't even want to be in Palestine. They say they prefer the more secular Israelis in charge.

Why do you think they are now joining the army.

I think a wave of nationalism, which has it's ups and downs.

Pros: More soldiers in the military means we can defend ourselves better.
The Haredim mix with secular Israelis, bridging gaps.
Maybe now they will find work instead of reading books all day.

Cons: Because of their presence and numbers, the Army is becoming increasingly more Orthodox (segregation of men and women, etc.)

What is your view on the Israeli Settlers? Are they the new Colonists, displacing the natives, exploiting them?
