I saw it in Spain, I suspect the dubbing spared me the full brunt of some terrible dialogue.

It wasn't bad, basically Ursula Le Guin's The Word For World Is Forest but a cruder attempt at social commentary, way louder, far dumber, and less interesting.

Well, preliminary weekend numbers are in. Did $73 million domestically. Close to some estimates (Box Office Guru has predicted $75 million). That is very good actually considering travel in many populated areas of the northeast was very difficult. Without the major snows it would have done better for sure.

We had relatively good weather here and my theater wasn't crowded yesterday.

Well I just saw it, the film surely didn't make you forget for even just 1 min that it was the most expensive one ever produced. Apart from that the level of pathos was unbearable in parts and the colonialism/Iraq critique could have been toned down a bit to give the plot a chance to maybe be interesting...

But anyways, definately dont regret seeing it - the Navi chick was hot btw...

Yep. It is not exactly the talk of the town. I don't hear people screaming to go see it. I think that the first weekend is going to be poor and that from there-on, it will make very little.

Well, john, I hate to break this to you but:

LOS ANGELES -- James Cameron launched his science-fiction epic "Avatar" into a safe orbit as the costly film soared to No. 1 with $73 million domestically and $159.2 million overseas, for a $232.2 million worldwide total.

It nearly paid for its production costs its first weekend, and will probably be reaping profit after next weekend, if not sooner.

So I watched it.

Holy CRAP that was awesome! Just when I almost lost all faith in Hollywood they pull out a squeaker. It started slow but then it builds up to this epic climax of a battle that lasts for like half an hour and it's just continuous adrenaline high! I don't care what people said, I loved it! Hopefully next time I'll go early to get a good seat.

Awesome, the way I see it - as of right now as 5% return on investment in anything is good in this economy.

The movie cost 500 million. So if it makes 550 million, we can expect more stuff like this :goodjob:

313 million.....3 1 3, the one after 2, then four minus three, then one point five times two. Think of how horrible of a typo that would have been in the industry:eek:

Does the 313 include marketing and other stuff?

Saw, was awesome. Totally and completly awesome. I WILL see it after Xmas. Which is saying a lot cause I never see a movie more then once. I have a wall of unopened DVDs because I remember the movie years later.

I don't get this complaint that there is an anti-war/whatever message. There's a message in every movie now. If you limit your self to movies with no message then your gonna be spending an awful long time at home.

Still haven't seen it yet, but why didn't they just nuke the locals from orbit and mine through their chared skeletons?

Dont you try bring logic in here Pat damn you.

this "look, a new expensive hollywood movie" hysteria outlined in this thread amuses me.
havent been subject to something like this in years.
mobby, grow up.

I cant find a source that says precisely, but generally marketing and such is included in the budget. I don't think its 500 million though, because there already barely going to turn a profit with a 300 million dollar movie, let alone a 500 million dollar movie. of course, titanic made 1.8 trillion....so who knows.

Too many of those damned anti-nuke activists. :p

We had relatively good weather here and my theater wasn't crowded yesterday.

It was packed at my theater, and the only other film in my town to sell out was New Moon...(Which, by the way was the first time I heard of amovie selling out around here since the first Potter film, which was still selling out well into its second week)

Still haven't seen it yet, but why didn't they just nuke the locals from orbit and mine through their chared skeletons?

I think the exec said something about a PR disaster if they did that.

Spoiler :
I wonder what the world would be like if the real native americans were capable of forming a large concentrated military force like that :mischief:

Otumba, and then some.

Which is somehow worse than the PR disaster of brutally killing them one by one face to fact and humanizing them?

Its things like this that let me know that despite the money they poor into movies they will always be crap. You can cover a turd in chocolate, but it is still a turd.
