Babe, Hunk and Similar Threads

And to think that throughout history, people believed that censorship and free speech restrictions would be effective through government regulation and/or oppression and religion, when in the end, it's corporate marketing departments that are the most effective.

You have discovered the foundation of modern American liberalism: Government may suck, but the private sector sucks even more.

It's a balance of power issue. Whichever one has the upper hand can suck more. The one that's trying to make a play for dominance at least has to pretend to care to try and drum up support.

Let's all remember that google has no problem showing ads on the many hours of nude yoga videos on youtube, or music videos about sex, or any of the free films about it on that service, or in their image searches, web searches, or news searches. So while having babe threads is hypocritical on CFC, it is even more hypocritical for Google to be the one to shut them down.

That said, I shut off ads on CFC ages ago because they are so unrelated to the content here, and like others said are often mixed with dating websites, mailorder brides, etc. So the whole family friendly google bull is a tad bit smellier.

I'm tempted to steal that phrase for a signature quote :D

It's hypocritical of Google, understandable for CFC because the forum needs a hosting service. Either that or we users pay for it.

Well, pretty soon when you are looking on the internet for a particular book to buy, Google will pop up a message saying they feel that that book is inappropriate for you, and direct you to another title.
:scan:
I already get bizarre recommendations from Amazon, for books or videos they think I'd like, based not only on my past purchases and browsing history on their site, but what other people bought, if we had purchases in common (people who bought Book X also bought books W, Q, and B). The problem is that they go by genre, which means they used to recommend a godawful lot of Star Wars and X-Files before I learned how to tell them I wasn't remotely interested in those. And of course since I bought most of the Classic Doctor Who videos, they assume I want the nuWho stuff, which I don't.

The only time I'm told any "inappropriate" message is if I try to shop on amazon.com and get a message directing me to amazon.ca. The thing is, though, is that I'm an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker and my credits can only be spent on amazon.com.

What about making donations for the running of the site so that we don't have to rely on ads? That way Google starts to lose customers as people move away from it because it isn't making sites money any more.

Alas, poor Babe Thread! I knew it, Horatio; a thread of infinite breast, of most excellent fanny; it hath borne me on its beauty a thousand times; and now, just limited to my imagination it is! My rage rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have wished to kiss I know not how oft. Where be your faces now? Your curves? Your hair styles? Your flashes of sparse clothing, that were wont to set the forum on a roar?

Uh-huh... :coffee:

Staff can still see these threads, though, right? There was an earlier mention of this.

TrekBBS simply created an opt-in forum that apparently can't be accessed via Google search. *checks to see if current avatar contest from that forum can be accessed via google image search*... nope, not a single image shows up and neither does the existence of the thread itself.

However, a specific avatar (a rather notorious one that would be considered at least somewhat risque and not allowed here on CFC) entered in this contest turns up immediately in a normal Google image search that has nothing to do with finding it on TrekBBS.

(I use that forum as an example because it's vBulletin and similar to CFC in terms of activity, variety of forums, subforums, and range of topics)

Was mentioned earlier, that's not possible, because ads get displayed on a "per site" basis, not "per thread".

I'm sure ypu guys are smart enough to figure something out

Hm, this seems like a very harsh rule, i mean many pics can contain 'strategically covered nudity (sic)', and be harmless.

Most movies have such images, and so do many many computer games, including Civilization :p

I'm not seeing anything in that image above that could be considered a problem.

^Well, it is supportive of the patriarchy, given it enforces the view that even an Empress has to look hot :(

(and Theodora has 'better' pics in civ5 anyway)

thing is thats true - but if you get a notice from google to pull your content then you either comply or lose the ads (and revenue) - so of course their policy does cover essentially everything - but once you are seen in violation by them it does not help to state that its overly broad if you want to use their services.

In this case of course the "adult content" in the Babe etc. threads are somewhat easier to adjudicate even by one of their spiders than most of the rest of their policies which relies on someone reporting a site in breach.

You have discovered the foundation of modern American liberalism: Government may suck, but the private sector sucks even more.

What makes them so good, they don't need resort to violence, imprisonment and martial law. AND the general population will not take to the streets to protest them.

The private sector will let you play in your sandbox, but they won't give you the sand you need because they don't like what you have to say.

The government will just take your sandbox and the sand you had to bend over backwards to get because they don't like what you have to say.

I'm going to say that they both really suck, but the private sector does not suck as much as the government since we can actually have a choice without leaving the country.

At least with the private sector, if I chose to use the private sector's sand, they have some really nice toys that come with it. The government just tells me that I should be happy that I have sand to play with to begin with and tells me how I should play with it.

just for everyone who is interested, here is a complete list of disallowed content by google - its quite expansive. Don't mention pregnancy.

Mail order brides, escort services, adult or sexual dating sites
Google ads may not be placed on any sites offering adult or sexual services, dating, companionship or erotic massages. Examples include, but are not limited to:

personal ads and/or sites for affairs and/or sexual encounters
escort services

Irony.

Indeed. I get some of that in my spam folder on a fairly regular basis, and I use gmail.

Thank you for those links, ori. That's a lot of interesting information.

... how does Google advertise on any forum at all then?

Violent content
What's the policy?

Our program policies don't allow Google ads to be placed on content that contains graphic or gory images such as bloodshed, fight scenes, and gruesome or freak accidents. Publishers are responsible for every page on which their ad code appears and for screening any text, images, videos, or other media which will appear on a page with Google ads.

I'm assuming they mean real and not virtual here. Otherwise games are screwed.

That's not what this is about at all.

Uh yeah. Right. "Family Friendly".
