Babylonian Statecraft

The last decade for the Phoenicians...

Spoiler :

The last decade had been difficult for the Phoenicians. King Baltashazar had intimated that he might accept princess Jezebel's hand in marriage, but a decade had passed now without a ceremony. It seemed strange that a King might be so busy that he could not take the time to marry for an entire decade, but apparently that is how things worked in this place and time. Much as Jezebel had feared, the Phoenicians had not achieved a high place in Babylonian society. As a people of the sea, the Phoenicians longed to return to it, but the immediate coastline and current technology in Babylon prevented any lucrative living at this time. To make matters worse, what little exploitable coastline there was had been given to other Babylonians by King Baltashazar. Indeed, all of the land, including the nearby jungles with their bounties of fruits had been doled out to other leading Babylonian citizens. It was clear very early on in the last decade that the Phoenicians would be pushed out of the banana business all together.

Consequently, the phoenician community was not exactly poor, but certainly not becoming wealthy or influential either. Selling bananas was not a long term plan for success. In recent months Jezebel had been working with some Phoenicians on setting up a business in town. They were calling it Babylon Bed Breakfast Bar and Brothel. Its purpose was to meet any and all needs of moneyed citizens that might be staying in town for the night, or passing through Babylon on their travels.

If the community was ever to become truly successful - if it was ever to become an integral and upstanding part of the Babylonian community - Jezebel was going to have to attract the favor of the king.

Jezebel dressed with the utmost care. The last decade had brought no new jewels or riches, even to the princess of the Phoenicians. Time and effort had maintained what modest baubles she retained. Jezebel needed to look her best today for her audience with the king. Would a ceremony finally be scheduled?

Jezebel asks for audience with the great King Baltashazar, in response to the summons of his messengers, and is given entrance:

Most honorable and just King Baltashazar, I Jezebel have heard that you will now condescend to take myself, the princess of Phoenicia, as your wife. I present myself before you to hear what you have to say about a ceremony, so that we may begin preparations.

OOC: ...oops. I didn't realize we were at the part of the turn that needed orders.

Jezebel on Babylonian Marriage Customs said:
but apparently that is how things worked in this place and time (referring to the 10 year intermission between proposal and marriage ceremony)

ooc: Well that's because the oracle kept divining poor omens that rendered a marriage inauspicious. Obviously only now have the gods seen fit to manifest auspicious signs approving of a marriage of state, and in this time and place such things are important. Anyways, I'm going to let you do the write-up, I've sent a pm with necessary elements.

PS: I'm going to take any brothel to be in actual fact an equivalent of the IRL Babylonian practice of sacred prostitution in the service of the goddess Ishtar.

Well I know what -my- career is going to be.

ooc: just kidding.

OOC: I return! *cue joyous celebrations*
During my travels I have developed a long term goal for the people of Babylon - nuke Paris at the first opportunity. They deserve it.

Just general French things or anything specific?

Give him time, Tambien has to play through each civilisation individually and make all their decisions himself, in addition to managing and updating each players statistics separately, and calculating/instituting everyones orders before finally putting out an update on the thread. It takes quite a bit of investment to be a game moderator, not accounting for real life priorities.
