Night clubs in Kuta Beach, Bali were destroyed by car bombs killing and badly injuring hundreds of people last night. The bombings appear to be the work of a terrorist organisation, probably a militant Islamic group with ties to al Qaeda. There is little doubt the bombings were targetted at 'Westerners'.

Friends of mine were in Bali (Kuta Beach) on end of season footy trips I'm praying that they are not among the 187 dead. :(

A full report of the bombings can be found here.

that's terrible. :(

i also find it a bit disturbing that media already is speculating in if it was a al qaeda linked terror organisation.

Well, I think there was a simultaneous bombing outside the American Consulate, so maybe.

It is also known that there are substantial Al-Qaeda cells in the region, so it has to be a possibility. Especially as of the numerous Moslem terrorist organisations there, none has claimed responsibility.

It's true there is no proof - yet - that an Islamic terrorist group is responsible however events in Indonesia in recent times suggest this is a high probability. Admittedly, it is also possible that elements of Indonesia's armed forces who are seeking to desabilise the Megawati Government are possible suspects.

All the evidence so far points to a group called Jemaah Islamiyah which was reportedly behind a plot to blow up the US, British and Australian Embassies in Singapore last year. This article has more information.

F'ucking lowlives, we've even helped the army with cleansings of the Aby-Sayyaf, but those worms are everywhere. Of course it's the Abu-Sayyaf which is linked to the Al-Qaida who is behind this mess.

A callous effectiveness is needed to eradicate these scums, nevertheless the Indonesian Army is impeding itself by internal corruption and defection. Besides, Indonesia is one of the most difficult places on earth to hunt terrorists, imagine the thousands of far-off islands where they could be hiding, and that's what they're exploiting to the maximum.

It's a nasty event there. Hope your mates are ok andy.

I think there is little doubt that this was aimed at europeans. It is a tourist resort after all. It's tough to hunt down terrorists and dangerous to do so, but it's important that we do something about it. It's not Indonesia's fault, but they need to do a lot of work to try to stamp it out. As for Australia, i think this shows that we are threatened, although what this means, I don't know. I think this should reinforce the desire not to go to war on Iraq, as we have much closer things to worry about.

Just horrible, the death toll is past the 170 mark.

To me, this is just further proof that ALL terrorists need to be hunted down, and we should NEVER talk to them about anything, terrorists are only good for killing.

Sorry if that's harsh, I'm sickened that people are murdered for a "cause". :(

No kidding. These people were just out for their vacation. Just seeing the sights, visiting their country...and this is what happens.

I believe the message is clear, it's what I have been saying all along, extremists are anti-west, not just anti-USA.

I hate to say it, but I believe there will be more and more of this, unless the world steps foward to stop it.

At first, I heard ten. Then, I heard fifty. Then, I heard a hundred. Then, I heard a hundred fifty.

Now it's up to 187, as far as I've heard. I hope they hunt down whoever did this and give them a steady diet of bullets.

French Container, Bali, American Consulate. Must be all Al Qaida.
Bin Laden might be dead, but his terrorists are alive and well and playing with the western world. :(

The messgae is there, Australia is a US ally, many of the victims were Aussies on vacation.

They will continue to strike, don't you think they see the tepid and timid reaction the west has presented, outside of the US?

As I feared, it only emboldens them to more acts of imfamy.
There is no talking to these scum, only killing.

Terrorism.... :( When will people understand it can't be good?

If what I often read here is any indication, never.

When it came to terrorism, Reagan said it best.

"You can run, but you can't hide."

Unfortunately they have proven otherwise.

They can run, and they can hide, and then they can blow up another building.

My condolences to all the victims.

The government now says al Queda rising up again, and yet we are invading Iraq? This is another indictation that the war on terror must stay focussed.
