Boomers: The Evil Generation!

sharing mostly recipes on low carbs food

Really? My relatives like to share stories on how christians are being burnt alive in afghanistan and no go zones in western europe. It's not productive.

I'm sorry, but a lot of these posts (not all, but a lot), though they may be said seriously and sincerely, sound as though they were said by characters in those ridiculous, parodical adult cartoons, like "the Simpsons," or "Family Guy." Is this REALLY what the socio-political dialogue has descended to? Do people REALLY believe these stereotypes and fallacies here, and on many other threads, and various blogs, publications, "news' reports, and even political speeches and debates? Have so many people REALLY just stopped THINKING and speaking by rote and piecing together buzzwords and other zeitgeist phrases? Is this REALLY have things have come to? This SHOULD be a sign of the end of the world in some religion's narrative - unfortunately, I can't find one with such a warning sign.

Really? In the US the boomer generation generally got old and went backwards on every policy they advocated for in their youth. From civil and voting rights to costs of education and building of infrastructure. I get the defensiveness, but take as a whole the succeeding generations see a smorgasbord of hypocrisy, racism, and general resentment towards everything not old and white.

I don't think everyone is saying round up all the boomers and inter them or anything, just acknowledging that a lot of their *****ing about younger generations is hypocritical and narcissistic in nature.

and yes of course "not all white men".

I would much rather talk about how we are still pursuing oil and gas and subsidizing those industries more then renewables to this day then about how old people suck btw.

Another post responding by adding fuel to the fire of the problem - I was complaining about bad, thoughtless stereotypes and viewing people in unrealistic bloc terms, and you respond by doing EXACTLY that again to the subject in questions, reiterating the nonsense that a whole generation, or any other inherent demographic, can legitimately be viewed or spoken of in such terms. You have only, trying to debunk me, proven my point all the more and your complicency in the problem I'm bringing up.

In the US

For the record that piece is actually making an (imo pretty good) case that it's facebook and not Fox News and other right-wing propaganda outlets in traditional media that is driving the radicalization of the older folks who support Trump so solidly.

Another ridiculous generalization and stereotype. Can we grip here? When can we set aside the partisan and zeitgeist myths and buzzwords and actually THINK again, like we did in MY younger days, which were not as long ago as the "Boomers," or as recent as the "Millennials," but were in the '80's and '90's?

Hey
Yes, I glanced through it, looked fine as basket of angles.. I read it after the Brexit debate I am following now :)

Has it really ever been much better? At least it hasn't been getting progressively better, and the present being just an anomaly.

When I was younger, in a mythical age between the youth period of the "Boomers" and "Millennials," a mythical "tween" era in the '80's and '90's, when politicians were boring, the Cold War ended without turning "hot," and rap and grunge rock were born as developed musical genres and disco died, things were a lot less hyperbolic, incendiary, confrontational, polarized, and vicious on EVERY single socio-political issue, and real facts were quoted a bit more often than bad stereotypes and buzzwords, and media still had credential.

Can you really decry buzzword use when you're unironically using zeitgeist?

I feel like you're just doing performance art here. Why are you offended? The overarching theory here is that generations tend to have stereotypical views and positions and that the Baby Boomers in particular hold views that are damaging to our collective futures. This doesn't mean that every Baby Boomer holds those views... but that the majority does.

Gen X isn't mythical, and your generation certainly isn't known for being particularly great compared to all the others. The high horse is unnecessary. All generations are guilty of abhorrent or illogical views.

Yes I'm speaking in broad generalities, something that takes place all the time when speaking about social issues.

Are you trying to be condescending? You've made your point, I agree with you that its obviously a broad stroke. I do not care. I'm not complicit in anything other than being a human being in this case. By your standards no group can ever say anything about any other group because those groupings are never 100% accurate. That's a stupid point.

Your argument is based on reinforcing the concept that broad stereotypes based on inherent demographic quoted as though they were facts (or close to it) and collective guilt are acceptable debate tactics. I will not accede to your irrational point of view, which is not yours uniquely, no matter how much you dress it up or rephrase it. It is still another form of the cornerstone of some of the most repugnant of ideologies in world history, including some the moderators would be grumpy if I even mentioned by name.

Then the GOP happened most especially from 07-present along with the dawn of social media. Things are moving fast at the moment and hyperbole is the coin of the realm.

This is your rallying cry isn't it Patine? The "not all _____" argument on every topic. I'm sympathetic to it, but smh at the unrealistic worldview it harbors.

The Republican Party of the United States was founded at a conference in Wisconsin in 1854. It began it's sharp turn to the right, irrevocably with Warren Harding in 1920 (barring the Rockefeller camp and such, who were minorities in the latter period, until their virtual extinction after Anderson's humiliating primary loss to Reagan in 1980), though Taft and Arthur were quite right-wing too.

I don't even understand what you're trying to say here.

There are a lot of polls and studies done that you can look up in order to educate yourself. These sentiments don't come out of nowhere.

Don't really know what you mean by collective guilt. I don't believe in Original Sin, and there's no reason for someone to feel guilty if they happen to share basic characteristics with another. The Baby Boomers who are on the side of progress aren't the ones being pointed out as being harmful to the future.

But anyways, I'm sure you're right. The leftists were the REAL Nazis all along, etc, etc.

Oh no no no you don;t get to do that, they took another hard right turn the moment Obama was elected during the worst recession the US has seen in a lifetime. That hard right turn was systematically race baiting, poor bashing, government hating nonsense. That has pulled the a disproportionate amount of boomers with it. We aren't making this crap up or anything.

And a lot of boomers jumped off the ship when that happened, and you do a disservice to them lumping them all together. I wouldn't claim that all blacks are responsible for gang violence because it would sound stupid.
