Boycott Bee!

But even accepting that what Bee said is the worst thing you could possibly say*, why does what Samantha Bee says matter at all? Or (without equating the two) Roseanne? How is this politically relevant? If not, isn't it just gossip?

*I'm equally as amused as Arwon, though it's important to clarify that not everyone in Australia is a tradie or public school educated WASP wanting to prove they're not from the North Shore.

I was really disappointed that she apologized. I guess it satisfies executives who threatened to cancel her show if she didn't do it?

Of course. And I like the fact that her apology was specific in mentioning the choice of word...leaving the reality that whatever word you might substitute the impression the Trumps are leaving is the same.

No, it isn't. I detest Ivanka Trump, but it's not okay to use that word.

That's your opinion, not a fact. My opinion differs.

1. I'm not American.

Well you're North American, which is what's relevant here. We've been through this before however.

Ivanka Trump is not married to her father. Melania Trump is married to him. Therefore, since Melania is not incapacitated, she should be the one carrying out the duties of the First Lady. Ivanka should not be doing that.

That's a very pedantic way of missing the point. I said that in response to a long diatribe about how unthinkably undemocratic it is to have someone performing official state duties just because they happen to be related to the person who was voted as leader. I'm well aware that he isn't married to his daughter (yet), but that isn't really relevant.

It is absolutely sacrilegious and offends all women when used in public.
Weird guy mansplains to women how they have to feel about the usage of a word.

That was a good summary, but it would have been more effective if you had quoted the entire droning pedantic text instead of just the one line.

You don't have to be black to feel disgusted when someone is called ape. Get a grip.

However it's not something I take personally, because I'm white and the racial slur is directed at people who aren't. But there are in fact billions of people who can legitimately take it personally. Since it is a racial slur not a personal insult it is more disgusting, no matter what the word choice.

The issue at hand here is a totally different thing, because the insult was very clearly personal and for all the people who may complain about the choice of word the only person who could take it personally is Ivanka Trump...who has more than earned an insult.

You're free to feel however you want.

You're not free however, to pretend to speak for a whole demographic, it's that easy. Especially when you don't even belong to that group that you're pretending to speak for. There are tons of women who don't agree one bit with your pseudo-religious opinion about a word you don't like, and by claiming that the c-word "offends all women when used in public" you are trying to silence their voices just to make your narrative look like it has more support than it actually has - which is just a dishonest and disgusting thing to do.

Because that person clearly has no idea what he's talking about and just made that tweet for cheap upvotes.

Plus, does he really suggest that Americans are not also offended by children being shot by guns of any kind? How intellectually challenged would that person have to be if he truly believed that?

It's silly in every regard.

Everybody knows the AR in AR 15 stands for Automatic Rifle

c-word is absolutely the most vile and sacrilegious thing you can say about any female human being . It is not a vulgar term for any vagina, far from it. It alludes to the particular organ which was not taken care of in months, is in the state of complete neglect and emits profound stench, and your entire humanity and femininity is reduced to this description. It is absolutely sacrilegious and offends all women when used in public. It should be only reserved for the bedroom, between consenting adults, to spice up the feeling of intense intimacy and, for some, enhance psychological aspect of the sexual impulse. Married mother of 3 Samantha Bee is welcome to reverberate this word while with actor Jason Jones, in their bedroom, but not on cable, in front of spectator public and against another married mother of 3, regardless of her status or what her politics is.

Wow this is like a ham radio broadcast from another planet

Hell even as refined a man as Prime Minister Gough Whitlam had his "Country Member" quip.

(I'm also not sure I get the North Shore reference)

There are tons of women

How do you know this, how can you possibly measure that ton? Did you conduct scientific opinion pole? Or do you just extrapolate yourself over that ton? And if it is possible to do what you are doing, I will just counter -- tons of all kinds of humans are offended. We even have an admission of guilt. And I bet my ton is heavier than your mythical one. And what has the religion to do with any of this? You don't have to have an ounce of religion to have something sacred. And we are not talking tampons here. There are no groups in this conversation. These are basic human categories. So save your pseudo-feminist "disgust" for tons of whoever you think will express solidarity with you.

As far as this nonsense about personal vs plural -- c-word is plural and can be taken personally by any member from the half of English speaking humanity. It is disingenuous to argue otherwise.

Finally few words for those who keep parroting: "what you say is only your opinion". Doh. Yes, so? What kind of news are you trying to break here, @Ajidica ? By definition, everything composed by any given poster is his/her opinion, whose elses? You don't have to be a Pope to have your opinion aligned with objective truth. Any heated discussion is by its very nature a war of ideas. The point of forums is self-expression and exchange of opinions, which may influence other opinions either way. Anybody who cares for truth and cares to read all this will re-evaluate where he stands on this issue and carry on with his life accordingly.

I would like to believe that Pope Francis has a t-shirt with this written on the front, and "but it helps!" written on the back.
All I know is I need to make that T-shirt.
THIS STATEMENT IS ALIGNED WITH OBJECTIVE TRUTH

I'm curious as to why Samantha Bee apologised. Who does that apology satisfy? What purpose does it serve? Is it just a performance of moral superiority over Trumpians? I don't get it.

I imagine her employer ordered her to. There's no way she's going to lose many viewers over it.

if its not racist to call white people apes (the Irish may not share that notion), then what happens if you call someone you think is white an ape?

Roseanne said she thought Jarrett was white and Middle eastern, Persian or Saudi Arabian, which is why I guess she included the Muslim Brotherhood in her insult. Does that make her insult racist but not her? I dont think race had anything to do with it, the insult was based on Jarrett's resemblance to an ape-like character in a movie. Maher's insult of Trump was based on his resemblance to an orangutan. If only Trump was Irish...

Sadly it looks like Bee will lose her show... Her ratings were already on the decline and she's losing advertisers because of this.

Well you'd probably only need about 40 of them to have a couple of tons of women, the minimum requirement for "tons" plural. You could probably find 40 women who believe absolutely anything if you look hard enough.

You can have just 3-4 per ton if you use a particular class of American women....(Usually found in Wal-Mart with Maga-Hats, hogging the disable-persons scooter-cart thingies)

So, if I call you an idiot everyone on the planet should take it personally? That seems pretty much idiotic. The introduction of "plural" seems particularly idiotic, and weird to boot. What does plural have to do with anything? Even if I called you and the next guy idiots, using the plural, that wouldn't make any difference. Now, if idiot had been commonly used as some sort of slur against some group then people in that group might take me using it to insult you as a fresh slur against them, but it hasn't. Neither has the word you are up in arms about.

It is VULGAR, with a capital V, for sure, and if you will confine your sniveling to that issue I'll agree with you. This whole heroic stand in defense of the purity of womanhood, because you think all women should see themselves in Ivanka scumbag Trump, is not gonna play.

I doubt that any current people of Irish descent can remember the last time "apes" was used as a slur against the Irish.

It's a fact on this forum, at least. There's a reason that word is on the autocensor list. You can take your opinions offsite if you are determined to throw insults at women.

Well you're North American, which is what's relevant here. We've been through this before however.
There actually are some words that have a negative connotation in Canada that don't in the U.S. and vice-versa. That's why I prefer to be specific. Since North America runs from the high Arctic to the Panama Canal, it's important to specify which country you're talking about.

That's a very pedantic way of missing the point. I said that in response to a long diatribe about how unthinkably undemocratic it is to have someone performing official state duties just because they happen to be related to the person who was voted as leader. Do pardon me for focusing on an incident relevant to Canada, as Ivanka plopped herself into the chair behind the desk in the Oval Office when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was visiting.

I am aware of your point, but preferred to address it in my own way.

The issue at hand here is a totally different thing, because the insult was very clearly personal and for all the people who may complain about the choice of word the only person who could take it personally is Ivanka Trump...who has more than earned an insult.
She's earned insults, yes. But she hasn't earned that insult.

So, if I call you an idiot everyone on the planet should take it personally? That seems pretty much idiotic.
"Idiot" is not a misogynist, offensive, sex-based insult.

Would you please be specific about the term that is supposedly offensive in Australia? Cause right now you're being rather diffuse about it.
