Broccoli is high in vitamin C, as well as dietary fiber; it also contains multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties, such as diindolylmethane and small amounts of selenium. A single serving provides more than 30 mg of Vitamin C and a half-cup provides 52 mg of Vitamin C. The 3,3'-Diindolylmethane found in broccoli is a potent modulator of the innate immune response system with anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer activity. Broccoli also contains the compound glucoraphanin, which can be processed into an anti-cancer compound sulforaphane, though the benefits of broccoli are greatly reduced if the vegetable is boiled. Broccoli is also an excellent source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells.

Boiling broccoli reduces the levels of suspected anti-carcinogenic compounds, such as sulforaphane, with losses of 20–30% after five minutes, 40–50% after ten minutes, and 77% after thirty minutes. However, other preparation methods such as steaming, microwaving, and stir frying had no significant effect on the compounds.

Broccoli has the highest levels of carotenoids in the brassica family. It is particularly rich in lutein and also provides a modest amount of beta-carotene.

A high intake of broccoli has been found to reduce the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Broccoli consumption has also been shown to be beneficial in the prevention of heart disease. [1]

Also it's delicious.

What do you think about broccoli?

I like broccolini. The stalks are better.

Broccoli is nice, but my mom always puts way too much friggen balsamic vinegar on them when she makes them. Bleh.

I've read that broccoli is very good when roasted. I have yet to try this, but I think it would be very good.

That is interesting! I put it on pizza frequently but I think by itself that could work too.

Owen, you should try preparing your own broccoli. Just steam it and it is delicious! Even raw! Raw is probably my favorite, and most nutritious!

I like the flowerettes, but do not really care for the stalks very much.

I tend to prefer mine steamed, with a little red pepper and a light soy sauce.

Broccoli is amazing and I try to eat it whenever I can, or whenever my mom cooks it.

I think it's good, I don't understand the hate towards it :p

Because, much like asparagus, it can be absolutely inedible when overcooked or overseasoned.

Yes, but it can be quite easy to make gross, unlike some other food items.

I dunno... what's difficult to make gross? Eggs are a lot easier to make gross than broc, but they don't get nearly as much hate.

Broccoli is awful, rancid, horrific stuff.
You haven't had it properly prepared, then. My grandmother couldn't cook broccoli to save her life; always overcooked it.

On pizza? :ack:
Raw is disgusting.

I voted for the first three choices, because properly cooked broccoli is one of the best foods there is, period!

BTW, to the broccoli haters: try it with a little cheese drizzled over it. Don't smother it - just enough to taste. It may help.

Yes on pizza, and yes raw! I'm sorry you don't like it. :( It's fantastic.

I also cover pizza with spinach. NOM NOM NOM

Much better steamed than raw, but in either case good.

Spinach is good too, but... on pizza? What?
