C2C: Promotions

1 I know that we have exoskeleton infantry but this is a heavy armored unit. What do you think about exoskeleton promotion for infantry units. Something like here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2W23ysgWKI

This promotion can be added by some building.

2 What do you think about spliting promotions to two or three categories

- skills - something that unit can learn from xp (ex shock, cover, city rider)
- equipment - something that comes from technology (ex from buildings) - you cant learn this from xp (ex bamboo armor, poisoned tips).
- emotions - something that your unit feels (ex religious promos, morale promos cause we have a new idea about unit morale and negative emotions like fear). cant learn from xp

What do you think about that two points?
 
You can either 1) put them in border cities that get attacked a lot to give them more XP or 2) build them in cities with lots of military buildings that give free XP.

26 free XP (for Police III) is pretty hard to have...
And in border cities, i often have better units for defense, so they dont earn anything.

In my actual game, lot of city have 10+ guard with Police II to keep Crime under 100...
 
Initially, yes, but you really should dedicate one city to produce all your units, including the police ones. And once you start amassing those great generals and +xp buildings, as well as have access to more sophisticated civics (momentarily changing them to get the most free xp, especially if you can time it with a golden age, is another good trick), you can promote even the defensive-only units by a lot of levels.

And definitely try and get the Shaolin Temple wonder - the shaolin monks can get the police promotions, but don't have the extra -:gold:/turn maintenance on them.

1. Sounds good, I can add that after we release V26.

2. Talk to Thunderbrd about that, he is planning something crazy with regards to units and promotions.

It's what I do, using my "Gladiator city" (93 free XP because Spartacus is OP), but I dont like the fact that so many promotion have reduce % revo (spam noble and no revo), but not reduce crime, while revo are far less a problem even without using these promotions...
And having Combat VI for prerecquite is really too big for a non-combat promotion, that really break the "specialized unit" thing

Programming setup for these are coming along nicely I'd say, but it'll take a lot of time to develop the xml for it all (and there may be a goodly amount of debugging along the way as I find various small issues in my coding revealed by actually using these systems rather than simply setting up some proxy situations and seeing those work as expected.)

I expect by the end of September you'll start seeing some of the Combat Mod stuff come to fruition. And thereafter, the xml should hopefully start falling into place rather quickly.

I belive that promo shoul require exoskeleton promo because that type of equipment is very heavy

Thunderbird do you plan to add aid promotions from realism invictus mod also? If yes that will be five categories of promotions.

I was thinking of alternate timelines and was thinking what if you made an exoskeleton for a horse? Imagine if the weight of the rider was not felt by the horse? Or even an exoskeleton for an elephant! :eek: While conventional vehicles would be obviously better than animals, some animals can go on terrains that other vehicles even with treads The get stuck in. The down side of course is not you have to feed and power the thing your riding on. But still it would be pretty epic to see.

EDIT: Might be cool to see one for dogs as well, since they are still used in missions.

Should just be a few weeks for the base code to arrive. I've done a merge and a big debug session and that leaves me with only a few more projects to complete and then we'll be there.

I'm debating how to implement Emotional Promos and I don't think it would take much coding actually (only a few little spots I can think of.) and otherwise, everything else left to complete is almost there. I may have to figure out how to pull up a popup for one project here though and that's the one that has me wondering if it'll take me longer or if I'll shelve that mini-project for now.

I COULD merge now but I want to wait for the freeze to be over and for both AIAndy and Koshling to be here and present for a good solid review of the code as soon as it goes in.

I don't know what the aid promotions do... perhaps eventually they could be worked in but they aren't an immediate part of the near release. Actually, on second thought, if they do what I think they do, I may have a whole system worked out that may take that to a whole 'nother level. But with being uncertain about what they are, I'm not sure if I've got something like them planned or not ;).

Absolutely not. One aspect of the Combat mod is that it will allow for Sub-Combat Class specifications on units. These, and in some cases the base Combat Class of the unit, will be the biggest factor in determining what kinds of equipments each unit can get.

However, you could build interesting dependencies to achieve certain equipment promos like you mentioned on the Jetpack idea. Furthermore, one kind of promo (be it equipment or otherwise) such as, say, Flaming Arrows, could give the unit an additional Sub-Combat Class, such as, in that example, Fire Wielding. This, too, could lead to other promos, be they equipment or otherwise, such as further skill promos for Fire Wielders.

I'm going to design some structure to get us started with these once the coding is in place and fully audited but I'm more than certain the rest of the mod team will see a lot of new and interesting ways to make use of these new coded structures.

Ex whan a catapult and infantry stay in the same tile and you move infantry it will have free siege aid promotion (from catapult - ex 1 first strike)

That system forces to attack and defend in stacks that contains different types of unit to get more aid promotions.

I belive that near future will belong to armored exoskeleton infantry

So we can add building like Military eqipment factory that will add equipment promos to infantry units with technology development. Example (I will repat promos that i post before)

So better technology you have than better equipment infantry belongs to you

Sounds neat. I have some functions coming that will offer similar cross support and will achieve very similar modding goals. Would be interesting to see both in action at once. I'll have to really take a look at that down the road.
 
Just an FYI, I still intend to make "content" for C2C (techs, units, promotions) after V26 is released even though I also am now working on the SDK, so if anyone (specifically Hydro) has requests for things please post them.
 
I would like to see underwater tunel to act as a railroad, electric railroad, and maglev. I dont know why tunel have only 1/2 point movement...

Another thing that maybe is imposible is underground tunel. When modern warfare begins you can lost a lot of roads but thanks to underground tunel your city will have access to resources and your units will be able to move from city to city quickly.

Is there a "limit" on the number of Promotions a unit can get, because my unit (the Assassin) has turned blue which means another promotion is available, but i have NONE listed for him to be available for??
 
huh... maybe that answers to the problem with the animals having a glow when not promoting... if you've run out of available promos but have gained a level is it possible? I'm not sure...
 
Oh, wait... I wonder if when the system invalidates an otherwise possible promo it qualifies to glow since you don't have that promo but you can't take it because its been invalidated (good example until my next upload would be any promo that offers withdrawal on a unit that can only defend... not sure what kind of promo might be qualifying in this manner on your rogue but I could see that being an issue somehow.)
