Caesar: The Gallic Wars

Wow - that pic is really great. It should definitely make its way into the mod. Maybe even as the main screen.

Great work, Rob. Pompey will go in today. I like the vanetii name also.
@ LouLong. Great to see on the new thread. Anything you can do would be most welcome. I played both Reconquista and TGA a little and came to realise that your modding ability is indeed great. What would you like to get involved in? We have very little done on governments and, although there is a rough plan, not much has been done on the tech tree. Also many building graphics will yet be needed and some units too, I think.

Don't count on me for gfx, I have two left hands.

But I will see what I can do on governments. The tech-tree will IMHO be pretty simple, except if you want to recreate events, à la RFRE.

I'm thrilled you want to help out. What way should we proceed? I'll post the new version of the biq later and If you have gmail or a work mail address I can send the mod folder to you too.
I had some basic ideas for the techtree and for gov.s but you can feel free to experiment. I don't want to overcomplicate things so I wasn't hoping for something along the lines of the RFRE tree. Besides, we'd have to sacrifice an era to do that(for timers) and I was thinking of splitting the eras into two books of 'De Bello Gallico' each.

Sounds like a good idea to me, with the tech tree and all. However, since I have dial-up, I have not been able to download RFRE, and I therefore have not experienced the so called "timers". I think that is time for me to come into the light. Would someone be as kind enough to give me a detailed report as to what timers are(actually, I just really need to know how they work-I already have a basic idea as to what they are)?

Thanks Rrakkiss. I looked it over, and I now understand. I'm out of the dark and into the light.

How are things going Traianus? Need help with anything? I haven't heard from you lately.

hiya, JD. Haven't posted 'cause there's nothing major to report. I'm just plugging away with graphix and pedia entries and stuff.
I was considering making all legions spawned units rather than buildable to reflect the fact that they have to come from 'Roman' cities. I'm not sure though. I don't want to tie the players hands too much.
Another thing worrying me is the SS victory. As we discussed before, you will need to capture certain cities in order to build parts of the SS victory. However, which cities will it be? How do we decide? I'm thinking that to build the britanic part the player will just have to capture a coastal city and hang onto it until the end. That would reflect historical events sufficiently, no? Should it be something similar for the Germanics?
One further thing; Naturally, we want the Roman's to build the Roman buildings and the Gauls to build the Gallic ones, etc. I haven't much experience with working with flavours in mods. Is this the best way to acheive this? In RFRE the problem is eliminated because the 'foreign' civs have an entirely unique tech path. That won't be the case here. This will require some experimentation.
Anyone with answers to any of the above please comment.

I think we should put our heads together and decide on a plan for the mod. I mean that there should be a sequence of events that roughly follow history. For instance, which civs should be strong at which point.
The start is obvious - the helvetic invasion. they will pump out their units and the Roman player will have to repulse them. Hopefully they will take some Allobroges cities and Rome can claim them.
Next is the Suebi. They will have high defence units so they stay alive until later on at least but we should give Rome a reason to go after some of their territory early.
Around this time we want the player to take the Sequani lands which will in turn open up Belgica.
I need ideas here - possible resources to go after and units for these particular enemies.
Any thoughts on the subjects of my last post would be helpful too.

For Britain, I don't think the player should have to hold it until the end, say, about 20 turns. I think that would be better for gameplay. We will have to decide what cities the player must hold on too soon, but I think we should wait a week or two until making decisions. As of right now, flavors seeem like the best option for keeping civs to the correct types of buildings. Things have been heating up recently, so it could be a bit before I come up with some ideas for enemy units and resources.

Question however: Will we use the wheat idea that we discused in the mod?

Unfortunately, we will have to hold onto a Britanic city until the end. The ss victory is not possible unless you hold all parts until the it's complete.
I think the building problem is sorted. I gave the civs 'non-era' techs such as Roman Ingenuity and Germanic Ingenuity from the start so the Gauls can't build Temples or Forums and the Romans can't build Gallic walls or The Wickerman wonder.
I've a lot more done now and I'm hoping to have the first era playable very soon. It will be bare bones with regards to the civlopedia and some graphix will be basic if at all but it will be good to have something that people can play and comment on.
I was considering asking the map squad to do a smaller version of the map like we discussed before.
Re: the wheat resource. I have made it a strategic wonder but am very unsure how to implement it in the game. Have you some ideas on this? My only thought is that we could make most units dependent on the resource before they can be built but here's the problem - As soon as the player conquers even one city with the resource the problem goes away and stays away as long as he keeps the city.

With the wheat resource, couldn't we just make it have a very high disappearance ratio?

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but did this scenario ever get finished? The reason I ask is twofold; firstly, it'd be a fabulous scenario to play IMHO, but secondly, the information in it - e.g. city lists, etc, would be of immense use to me in my push to get the updated Anno Domini mod up and running. I'd like to have one of the BIQs based on Gallic tribes, so if you've stopped working on the mod, but have stuff you could share :mischief: then I'd be really interested ;) .

Can anyone tell me if there is even one name known that could be associated with the Venetii? I haven't found a single soul to use as leader there and they're quite important in the Gallic Wars.
I can. There was someone, I think, in one of Coleen McCullough´s books about Caesar which I happen to have. I´ll check.
EDIT: Hey Rob, I´ve been doing a map of Europe in the last few days... do you want it? I haven´t uploaded it yet.

I've been in contact with Traianus, who is putting some stuff together for me from this project that I can use for Anno Domini, which will be great. Takhisis, I am interested in your map, but I'm not fully working on the mod until November, so maybe it'll be generally available by then?

I think so... though I don´t have a clue as to what to do with the baltic area... for nwo the map´s a copy of one I found in civ3.com plus Ireland, Scotland, and an enlarged Persia/Caspian area.
