Canada - "America Junior"?

I know that Americans like to call Canada "America Junior". I also know that it was a historical accident that Canadian territories did not become member states of the USA - a recognition of continuing British power in the 19th century. But are Canadians (excluding Quebec) so similar to the people to the south, and is the USA so powerful, that Canada is destined to join the USA? Would independence for Quebec make this more likely? Or is the tradition of a Canada-USA contrast so strong that it would never happen?

My understanding is that the english speaking Canadians
chose not to join the USA; being bolstered in this choice by the empire loyalists who fled from the USA after US independence.

I understand that the Canadians took the view that while they might have different viewpoints from the British on some issues; the bloody war of American independence had been an unnecessarily drastic means of resolving differences with Britain.

I seriously doubt that Canada will ever become part of America. I don't see why they would want to. Sure, they may eventually become an exact cultural duplicate of us (not that that's likely, though), but I doubt they'll ever be governed by us.

One day the whole of the world will be united in agony under the dictatorship of either Mr. Darkshade or Mr. CurtSibling, whoever achieves it first… :D

Maybe Canada can form up with the US in a union of some sort… Like the European Union? But it’s very ‘what if’…

My Sentiments exactly. And Im almost sure any of you would want to, and im also not so sure that we would let all of you in, the biggest union between us (bigger than what we have now) I see happening is some type of trade agreement where we make common currency, i.e. EU. (Good point Cimbi) Not necessarily the U.S.'s only currency, and we should include Mexico if do such a thing.

Ahem  I think you forgot someone! :mwaha:

Anywhoo, Canada is not currently in any position to join the U.S. because:
A) Canada much more socialist then the U.S.
B) Quebec
C) The fact that Canada is doing just fine on its own, why should the take a major risk?

History is nothing BUT a recollection and recording of 'accidents'.

We may be compatible on many cultural levels but how would Canada benefit from a union with the United States? Most Canadians would be opposed to such an idea since the voices of 30 million would be diluted into a body of 300 million. I fail to see how our economy would improve seeing as free trade already exists along our borders.

America's power does not serve as a lure. It could only serve as a spear and I have enough trust in our neighbours to the south to feel safe from that.

I don't see Germany trying to gobble up Austria. I don't see France eyeing Belgium. Sure they're similar but what's the point except for some members of the hegemonic state to boast of their nation's power.

An Union of North America would never work... Even with South America included, an union with the US in it would be way too dominated by the US politicaly and economicaly to be viable.
What makes the EU possible is that no country in Europe has an economic/demograhic/political weight realy bigger than any other. Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Spain all have comparable populations.
For the same reason, an East Asian union seems impossible as well. Either it includes China, which then dominates it, or it does not, and Japan takes a total lead.

stupid, just stupid.

that's what this thread is.

You may think that this is a stupid thread but saying things like these just prove your ignorance, because there are millions of immigrants to the United States every year, and some of them are even Canadians. Imagine that!

yeah, but seriously, do you see the majority of canada supporting a referendum of annexation to the us? or that situation actually arising?

I don't think that Canada will ever become part of the U.S., and I would prefer that it doesn't, because this way each country has its own vote at the U.N. and the two countries can hold concurrent seats on important U.N. committees. Combining the two countries would just result in a dilution of international power. Canadians wouldn't want to be annexed by the U.S., and educated Americans wouldn't want to bring Canada into the United States. I was not disagreeing with your assessment of the probabilities of the situation, but with the quoted text of your post, which was blatantly wrong and not part of the topic. If you said, "Why would any Canadian want to have their country annexed by the United States?", then I could understand, but your blanket statement with a total lack of qualifying phrases was too much to be ignored.

I think that Minnesota joining Canada is more likely than Canada joining the US, we are practically the lost tribe of Canada.

Seriously though, I think the biggest possibility is a union between the US, Canada and Mexico; sometime in the distant future. Ten percent of Mexican citizens live in the US now, we are becoming very interconnected.

All the Canadians I personally know would take offense for being called Americans. I really can see them lining up to become citizens of the glorious US of A.

Hmm, I don't know why, but I'm getting the feeling that you think this is stupid....

;)

I would like to remind both of you, a Canadian started this thread, if you start seeing Americans starting threads saying "they are just like us, they should be part of us!" and similar based threads, then I would call your, what I took as insults, as just. But obviously, from my view, that teeters on the brink of nationality trolling.
