[GS] Canada Discussion Thread

So people are upset that the icon for Canada is the maple leaf, which is on the Canadian flag?

While the Mountie may be stereotypical, I cannot really think of anything else they could have used that screamed "Canadian."

EDIT:

" I can't just NOT steal AI settlers"

An incredibly fair point.

No, we get to puzzle over the 2 new wonders now :)
Aswan Dam at electricity. But could be another one as well. But not hoover since it's straight.

Nanjungud Temple for the other one, or a similar southern Indian temple.

Edit: wait, I looked at the wrong icon at electricity.

I think a Sugar Bush or Sugar Shack UI would of been much more suitable as it is something that is almost uniquely Canadian with only a couple states in New England and a couple places in Europe having them. Also, the fact that something like 97% of Canada's population lives below the tundra line?

People complaining about the Civ not being efficient/good enough to properly win with a fast domination victory clearly haven't realized that this Civ (and, on top of that, many other Civs) are NOT designed for fast domination victory. Not every Civ has to excel at fast domination victory - if you don't like it, don't play it. Solves that problem easily. This is clearly a culture/diplomatic civ and are CLEARLY not a "war" civ, so deal with it. There's a different civ for your zerg rush playstyle out there that isn't Canada, I promise you that.
That isn't my criteria for liking a civ. This version of Canada just seems poorly done.

Aswan Dam? To me it looks like two smokestacks.

I was really hoping for something more interesting. The restriction on surprise war is really the only thing that's interesting about them. It's nice that we won't need to worry about Canada AI conquering city-states, and it also creates some intriguing modding possibilities if certain diplomatic actions can now be blocked from individual civilizations.

The Ice Hockey Rink looks pretty decent, but is just lame. Why not do something with trading posts? And same with the Mountie, cool ability, but eyeroll. Missed opportunity to actually delve into Canadian history for something special.

Even with farms, tundra tiles are still not very good. At least you get strategic resources twice as quickly from cold tiles. Canada should be able to aggressively place small cities along the poles to get lots of resources, and usually loyalty issues are smaller in those unsettled areas. Plus, with the protection from Surprise Wars, those small colonies should generally be pretty safe. So, that's actually a pretty interesting bonus.

A negative Civ.

Tundras are tundras, If you can build farm on it, they are still tundras. Canada is not Russia and don't have the yield bonus. The only good thing is tundras are usually of high appeal so high neighborhood gold for Canada. Also I don't see good points purchasing tundras.

Resources, presumably. That lets you settle a bit farther away from the iron/coal/oil you want and purchase to it quickly.

Well then it wasn't directed at you necessarily. It was for a couple people who were complaining that the civ is bad for fast domination.

I kinda cringe about the mountie, but otherwise I like it, and am excited to give it a try. Nice giant ynaemp tsl, friending US and Cree, and dowing Aztecs... should be fun.

On one hand, it's irritatingly stereotypical. Like, demonstrative of a total lack of research.

On the other hand, it does appear fun to play.

Tundra Scots is right.

I do think there's a nice secondary effect from the farm bonus, could mean for peaceful players there's a lot more room to expand after you take up all the available non-tundra spots. Think maybe a tundra district bonus would've been good too.

Laurier appears to be saying "you have ruled with great [...], solving these international problems. Canada be with you." His agenda appears to be "likes Civs that join emergencies"
