Capto Iugulum: 1920 - 1939

ooc: You said that it would violate the peace treaty.

OOC: So... is the only major European nation not embargoing Brazil the UK? And maybe Spain, if they count?

The Treaty of Kunming

In the interests of harmony in the Middle Kingdom and peace and prosperity for her people, the governments of the Dominion of Guangxi and the Unified Realm of China have come to an agreement wherein

1. The Dominion of Guangxi and the Unified Realm will normalize diplomatic relations.

2. Any attempt by any power to instigate or perpetuate instability or disharmony in China will be treated as an attack on both Guangxi and the Unified Realm.

Signed, His Highness King Richard Qing of the Dominion of Guangxi
Signed, His Excellency Prime Minister John Sun
Signed, His Excellency Quentin Liang, Minister of Internal and Chinese Affairs
*After some prodding and cajoling by his aide*
Signed, General Yehao Ma of the Unifiend Realm of China
Signed, Colonel Hsiao Yi, Chief of Staff

The various NPC nations inquired to by Argentina all accept the opening of new embassies. Nothing beyond that for now, though a couple of the East African states may inquire later about trading potential or possibility after I've had some time to think things over.

Ironically, by my count, the only European nations NOT embargoing Brazil yet, are the Papacy, Portugal, and Spain. However, it should be noted that Spanish tariffs are still very high, so they may as well be embargoing everyone but Peru.

We beg to differ, the Pope himself has pointed out the link between your beloved liberalism and moral decay and decline. We say again, we will not tolerate foreign states poking their noses into our internal affairs.

To the Faithful of the Church of England,

Recently, the Bishop of Rome, Pope Paul VI, made a declaration to the world calling for the reunion of the Christian faith under the Catholic Church, and while the Pope directed his calls to the Orthodox churches of the East, his call was also made to the rest of Europe. The Church of England rejects the call of the Pope, finding the Church gravely lacking in spiritual Truth, and as the Churches of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem were in error, the Church in Rome, likewise, is in error.

While His Majesty King Henry XIII is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, as his father and all of the Tudor Dynasty since King Henry VIII have been, the head of the Church of England is Jesus Christ. Only Christ Himself is infallible and equal to God. The Roman Catholic Church, however, recognizes the Pope as the Head of the Church of Rome, a position that must be filled by Christ alone. We reject the infallibility of the Pope, for no man is ever infallible. Even St. Peter, claimed by the Roman Catholic Church to be the first Pope, was not infallible, for after Christ said “…upon this rock I will build my church,” (Matt. 16:18) St. Peter denied his Lord three times before Christ was crucified (Matt. 26:69-75). Let us not forget the counsel of St. Paul, that “…all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23), so to claim that any man is above this and infallible would be nearly blasphemous. This is but one reason why the authority of the Church of Rome cannot be accepted.

The theological issues surrounding the priesthood, transubstantiation in the Eucharist, the existence of Purgatory, what constitutes the Biblical Canon, and prayer to the Saints rather than prayer to the Godhead likewise remain fundamental differences between the Church of England and the Church of Rome in which the Roman Catholic Church has been, and continues to be, in error, and I hope that many Anglicans remember these differences when considering the Pope’s plea. The Roman Catholic Church can no longer be accepted as the sole and catholic authority of Christianity, having diverged too greatly from Truth.

In temporal matters, the Roman Catholic Church continues to involve itself in political affairs aligning itself against liberalism and proletarism. One cannot be Roman Catholic and at the same time identify themselves as liberal or proletarist, and alignment with either of these political movements merits excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church. While the Church of England looks with horror upon the proletarist governments in Scandinavia, the American South, and Jamaica, proletarism is not sufficient cause for excommunication from the Church of England, and liberalism is embraced and accepted by members of the Church of England.

Of the two, liberalism has the greater sway, and therefore should be discussed at greater length. The Roman Catholic Church has driven the conception of liberalism to an extreme, arguing that its ultimate end is relativism. Relativism must be defined against toleration. Relativism suggests that man defines his own truth and all truth is equal, while toleration, which represents the liberal mainstream, would suggest that no man has the authority to impose truth upon another, and must learn to accept the existence of error. No man but Christ alone has the authority to impose himself upon another, for all men are sinners and equal under the Lord. For as Christ said, “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matt. 7:3)

It is true that one cannot be a liberal and a follower of the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church rejects this notion of the equality of man, claiming that they hold a privileged position amongst mortal men and are not sinners. This belief is contrary to biblical Truth, and one would find that liberalism is closer to Truth than Roman Catholicism.

With this said, proletarists who desire to reconcile their political beliefs with the tenets of the Church of England are accepted within the Church. The Church finds ironic the argument made by the Roman Catholic Church criticizing proletarists for being unable to accept the ideology of others. It is ironic that the Roman Catholic Church makes this criticism while simultaneously excommunicating Roman Catholics who also are liberals or proletarists. But the reason why this is done is because the Roman Catholic Church claims a monopoly to the Truth, when the only one who has such a monopoly is Jesus Christ and the Godhead, the ultimate source of the Truth.

Therefore, Anglicans both in the United Kingdom and around the world should disregard the Papal plea for a restoration of an old and ungodly order which the Church of England and the United Kingdom of Great Britain has fought since the Secession from Rome, the War of the Catholic League, and ever since. Christ alone is our leader, and any man who accepts Him into his heart is a member of his church. The Papacy does not constitute what is and is not the church; only Christ may do so.

To the Faithful of the Church of England,

The Most Reverend Michael Wen, Archbishop of Xinjing, of the Church of England in the Dominion of Guangxi endorses the Most Reverend Archbishop of Canterbury's statement.

OOC: It's marked on the map just south of Guangzhou. Guangxi built it as a new, western-style capital as part of its modernization program. It's in the same location as OTL Zhuhai.

The Most Reverend Robert Gray, Archbishop of Cape town would also like to endorse the statement made by the most honorable Archbishop of Canterbury.

King Ingvar I Gyllensvärd, Supreme Governor and Protector of the Church of Vinland, is in alignment with the views expressed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, regarding the call of the Papacy for Christian reunion.

OOC: I would write a more formal response, but alas I do not believe that I have the theological expertise to write a proper, in-character rebuttal. Thus, I will simply state that one has been made, based on the Church of Vinland, a branch of the Church of Sweden with Evangelical Lutheran and Pietist affiliations.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland- Galicia, Estonia, Catalonia Floating Tariff Agreement of 1927

Objective:
  • To secure resources, primarily agricultural, timber, and metals from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, particularly from their
dominion of Australia, for the states of Galicia, Estonia, and Catalonia in preparation for potential fall-out from the Brazilian embargo.
  • To ensure that United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland workers and population receive fair compensation for their goods.
  • To ensure the stability and cultivate emergent good will between the governments of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
and the Galician, Estonian, and Catalonian trading bloc.

This treaty aims to reduce United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland export tariffs of the following resources (list includes raw and semi-processed ores, timber, agriculture, etc primarily produced in Australia) in direct relation to any increased demand from the signatory continental European states.

Specifically, as trade volume increases, there will be a proportional reduction in trade export tariffs (the ‘floating tariff’ concept). Higher trade volumes will generate lower, per unit tariff rates, thereby encouraging trade. The end result will be a relatively constant export tariff income for the English crown regardless of increased trade volume. This translates to a relatively lower price for United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland resources for the continental European signatory states based on the volume of trade.

Because the tariff rates ‘floats’, this treaty will ultimately have little effect if trade volume does not increase, thereby insulating the English crown against negative economic consequences of potentially lowering tariffs. If, however, trade volume increases, the profits of trade will be concentrated in the producers of those resources, the people of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, while maintaining current levels of government profits. Ultimately the English crown will profit when resource producers spend the increased profits they have produced within their nation on domestic spending on the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland market.

The Galicia, Estonia, and Catalonia trading bloc obviously benefit by securing resources they require and obtaining them at favorable rates.
