Capto Iugulum: 1920 - 1939

We understand that the upstart and rudimentary coalition of soon to be former rebels in what is still currently Spanish Central Africa is most likely disorganized and perhaps disoriented at the deal which has been negotiated with them and has already been accepted by their self proclaimed leaders in conference, but we desire a public confirmation of the treaty the the obligations it entails.

OOC: Am I good at pulling off that arrogantly obnoxious diplomacy, or should I not even try ;)?

Requesting extensions every turn is the sign of a bad player.

Why, I always treat the customary extension as the deadline, instead of the deadline. It is likely that I haven't sent orders before the deadline more than a couple times.

Indeed. But when the extension is taken for granted, it becomes the deadline.

Indeed. But when the extension is taken for granted, it becomes the deadline.

That isn't the point of the extension. If you people did orders on time, you wouldn't need one, and EQ could skip the waiting game. I, for one, hope he punishes you all severely for your insubordination.

Yes, I'm a very naughty player. I deserve... punishment...

That won't be necessary. By brief I meant 12 hours extension; orders sent at any rate.

Chad does sign the treaty with Spain.

Could have sworn I did that already, ah well.

Hey, EQ, I lurked for a while and one of my friends has been telling me about this for a while now, so I was wondering if it was possible for me to join in. Any recommendations for countries?

There is still a little bit of time to join in on this update, but I do have a standard list of questions for any newcomer before I make recommendations:

1. Do you prefer a Western culture or something more exotic?

2. Do you prefer military action or domestic buildup or some mixture of the two?

3. Would you prefer to be on the fringes of player activity or right up in the middle of ongoing diplomacy?

1) I would prefer a Western culture, but it's not an absolute necessity. If you think there's an Eastern, or more 'exotic' region that would be more... suitable for me to learn the ropes and get into the game, I'd welcome those as well.

2) I'm generally focus more on domestic buildup first, and then military buildup mostly for defense. I find myself not particularly offensive in most games, unless provoked.

3) Ideally, I'd prefer some middle ground, where I'd be close enough to the action so as to feel more like a part of the game, but not so close as to instantly get devoured. I'd probably err on the side of caution and stay just a bit further away from the centre of conflict. :)

Thanks a lot, EQ.

Well, I'm sure others have their own opinions on what nations would work for you best, but based on what you've described I can think of the following:

1. Normandy, Poitou, and Orleans are all French states with no immediate threats or wars, and would likely be pretty good for a starter. Orleans has had quite a lot invested into its infrastructure lately, so it's probably the one which a new player would find most dull for the time being. Normandy and Poitou both have interests in Burgundy's colonial holdings, plus enough EP to actually matter when it comes to doing stuff. If, say, an aggressive nation were to do something in France in June of 1934, after provoking an incident, both Normandy and Poitou could do quite a bit of diplomacy and negotiation with other players.

2. Portugal: Recently Portugal has been obscenely wealthy thanks to booming aircraft and naval industries and exports. A highly neutral nation, but with plenty of income in recent years, there's a lot that could be done here, if you choose to do so. There is a treaty restricting its navy size after an unfortunate jaunt into Jamaica, but if you're interested in the design side of the NES ruleset, this would be the one I most highly recommend.

3. Hungary: If you definitely do want some sort of military action eventually, this is the one I'd recommend. They have plenty going on domestically, and are currently close allies with Russia and the Roman Empire. When/if a war breaks out between Russia and Germany, Hungary will likely be on the center stage of the conflict.

4. Hispaniola: Underdeveloped domestically, this island nation still primarily relies upon a plantation system and agriculture for its wellbeing. While it has been gradually shifting to tourism, its agriculture is the heart of the economy, and living standards are pretty low for the majority of natives. There's definitely plenty that could be done here, but don't expect much activity aggressively or militarily.

Also, Jamaica might soon be re-established as an independent Republic, in the off-chance that everything goes according to plan this year. :)

Ah yes, and if that's what happens, Jamaica would qualify as a real fixer-upper.

While EQ is working on a new update, I want to announce a part of my Turkey 1933 orders that he accidentally forgot to put into the last update.

Spoiler :
”Toplanma” policy:
This year the Dışişleri Bakanlığı (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also known as the Sublime Porte) under Tevfik Rüştü Aras has published a manifest, addressing all people of Turkish origin across the world. This memorandum has announced the so-called Toplanma (or Reunion) policy, according to which all law-abiding people of Turkish origin are welcome in their national state as newcomers and immigrants. The memorandum makes it clear that in no way does this symbolize any sort of inequality between ethnic Turks and people of other ethnicities within Turkish borders. However, potential immigrants are urged to join their brothers and sisters in their historical motherland in this new era of national renaissance.

In his interview, Minister Aras has stated that if the memorandum receives positive reaction in Turkish communities across the world, the next year may see a start of a government-sponsored program designed to integrate newcomers into social-economic fabric of the Turkish society.

Also, it was very sweet that he put a reference to my art into the 1933 update, but just so that people don't think I praised myself, here's what I actually did submit as a cultural contribution that year:
Spoiler :
The Minotaur by Fahrelnissa Zeid is a name of a picture that became a central piece in a grand exhibition which took place in August 1933 in Konya. The exhibition and Fahrelnissa Zeid’s contribution to it might have been left unnoticed by general public of the Turkish Sultanate, if it hadn’t been for one widely discussed public sensation. Three weeks prior to the exhibit, the artist had become a wife of Prince Zeid bin Husseyin, a member of the Hashimite royal family and the head of the royal house of Iraq, who was forced into emigration after the Partition of the Arabian Empire.

The Minotaur marks an important stage in Fahrelnissa Zeid’s creative career. Despite the sensational wedding (or, as some cynics say, thanks to it), this painting has given Turkish bohemian critics a reason to announce an emergence of a new artistic genius in the Middle East. Fahrelnissa Zeid’s works blend the elements of Islamic and Roman art from the East with abstract and other influences from the West. She works in a variety of media such as largeoil paintings, collages and stained glass panels.

I think I'd like to take Portugal, if there are no objections. Is there any useful information I'll need outside of the updates?

I presume I have to send in an orderset before it's formally claimed, so when is the deadline (assuming it hasn't passed already)? Since I joined the forum yesterday (longtime lurker), I'm under the impression that I can't private message you my orders for another three days. If you need it earlier than that, I can certainly email you.

Welcome Ophorian!

The update is about to come around. You should join for that one.

The only useful info I can think of is that your navy is limited thanks to a Brazilian-led but also US and Vinland enforced treaty against you after a ... interesting excursion to claim Jamaica in a neo-colonialism move.
