Capto Iugulum: 1940 - 1959

OOC: I totally get it Iggy. I did find it funny :) . It would be interesting if other nations made these maps. Does anyone have a map with the names to each country? I remember seeing one posted a couple months ago but I am unable to find it.

Bah, sorry I missed orders guys. :( I've been really busy lately with a bunch of family and friend stressful BS, Halloween, and my midterms. I'm really sorry.

Indeed. Same thing as with the Mayans, really. It's the last time Brittany did something headline-grabbing in Vinland, so extrapolating from the last time we heard from them, it would be reasonable to assume that Brittany is now the heart of some sort of pan-Celtic rebellion. ;)
now that sir, would be cool, realistic though? Nope.

EXTRA: WAR!

From our desk in Berlin, Germany
June 1, 1940

A new war has come to Europe, threatening to embroil the entire world once more in an epic conflict of nations. Russia and its allies have attacked a number of nations on a variety of fronts, bringing a tenuous era of peace to an end. Prime Minister Edwin Halifax of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland has declared that “the Great Game between our nations is over, a new Great War has begun” while asking for an official declaration of war upon Russia from Parliament. Based on available reports, the war began throughout the night of the 25th of May, as Russian irregular forces attempted attacks on vital German infrastructure and military outposts along their combined border. German forces managed to anticipate these attacks, and repulsed most of the raids, though it was initially unclear of the origin of the attacks.

The first real battle of the war began at 7:00 AM local time on the 26th in the Mediterranean Sea north of Egypt. A combined Russian and Italian naval strike force launched a full strike upon the British fleet stationed at Suez City in Dumyat. Four carriers along with numerous support ships and transports laden with ground forces, including vessels from Bulgaria, Romania, and the Roman Empire, steamed southeast in the morning to launch their attack. A British picket destroyer spotted the fleet as it approached, and managed to evade attacks by enemy submarines and aircraft. Despite jamming attempts upon the British radio, they managed to sound the alarm for the British air and sea bases in Dumyat, allowing the HMS Ark Royal to escape from the harbor and launch its planes alongside the land based fighters in the region. In the resulting battle, sheer numbers from the Italian and Russian carriers managed to slowly overwhelm the British air cover, both the ground launched planes and the carrier based ones. A Russian carrier and an Italian carrier were sunk in the battle, as was the British carrier. Multiple support ships from both sides have been sunk, and the surviving British fleet was forced to attempt a withdrawal through the canal. While some ships made it through to the Red Sea, they were immediately pounced upon by a waiting net of Tadjouran submarines. It is said only a pair of British destroyers have escaped this battle, and are on their way to destinations unknown in the Far East. On the morning of the 27th, as a much larger fight began further north, Russian and Italian troops made landfall against heavy resistance north of Suez City. Reports indicate as of now heavy fighting and casualties continues as the British rush armor to the front, taking advantage of a lack of tanks and heavy equipment among the Russian landing forces. Port authorities advise that during the remaining course of the fighting, international shipping avoid the canal, as numerous civilian vessels have been sunk or badly damaged in the battle.

As the Russians and their allies struck by sea against the British in Dumyat, the true theater of conflict was opened at 6:00 AM local time on the 26th. An army of what Russian government officials later declared to be an onslaught of over nine million men, a major offensive was launched against Scandinavia, Germany, and Croatia. The battle was opened as over six thousand Russian artillery pieces opened fire at designated targets throughout Scandinavia and Germany. Over the past few days, it has been reported that the Russians have badly mauled the German army, which has been assaulted along its entire frontier. Hungarian and Czech forces are said to have moved towards Munich against heavy resistance, as fighting continues along the border. In the north, the Russians have swarmed directly from Poland in overwhelming force, and as of today, have begun artillery bombardment of Berlin. Multiple major cities have reported Russian and allied bombing raids throughout Germany over the past few nights, as major factories and infrastructure has been hit in these attacks. Even further north, the Russian army has apparently captured the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa from the small Scandinavian garrison, and have defeated the border defenses as they push towards the Mannerheim Line. Scandinavian representatives have stated that this is what the Line is prepared for, and have expressed their utmost confidence that the massive fortifications can hold against anything the Russians can send at it.

On May 31, the Russian government issued its formal declaration of war against Germany, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. They have declared that the offensives have been in response to direct Anglo-German attacks along the Russian border. The Russian emperor has declared that “further encirclement of Russia and its allies can no longer be tolerated, and that the British and their German pawns will now face the harvest that they sowed.”

The Oncoming Storm
General Dmitri Dmitrivich Reznov stood at attention, his crisp black uniform standing out against the bright white garb of the Imperial Guard. They eyed him warily but dared not say anything. Besides being one of the most infamous and influential generals in the Imperial Russian Army, he was also a distant relation of the Emperor, who had summoned Dmitri here personally. He had been in the Army since he was sixteen, serving with distinction in the Great War and one of the first members of the elite Emperor’s Hand brigade. In his more than 30 years in the Imperial Army, he had advanced in rank and prestige at the loss of social station. When he had been promoted to Colonel, shortly after his father had become bed ridden with cancer, he had had to choose between staying in the Army or taking up the mantle as Count of Riga and take his place in the Royal Court. The choice had been simple. The next day, in a small ceremony overseen by Emperor Mikhail personally, Dmitri had foresworn his birthright and the title of Viscount had passed to his younger brother Vladimir. Dmitri had never looked back and when their father had died, Vladimir had proven himself to be an excellent count and trusted advisor of the Emperor, while Dmitri continued to be a dominant force in the Army.

The Emperor emerged from his study, the once strong soldier bent with age, his weight supported by a gnarled black cane. His usual regal garb of the court, fine furs and bright colors, were supplanted now by a simple black cloak with a heavy cowl to cover his face from the harsh night’s wind. “Walk with my young apprentice” he said with a crooked smile on his lips.
“By your will Emperor” Dmitri responded with a bow and followed the older man outside to the palace promenade.

The two walked in silence for several minutes, allowing Dmitri to muse on their relationship. They were distant cousins, the first Emperor of Russia having made his favorite cousin the first Count of Riga after unification. Despite separation of both blood and distant, the two families had remained closely allied. When Dmitri had turned 16, he had joined the Army and been placed under the command of the Emperor, who had then merely been General Mikhail Obolensky, brother of the Emperor and commander of Third Army. The two had bonded, the younger man reminding the General much of himself at that age and taking him under his wing to train. When not in the presence of others, they had taken to calling each other “nephew” and “uncle”. Mikhail had tutored Dmitri not only in warfare, but in leadership, tactics and various forms of combat. When the Great War had begun, Dmitri’s father had attempted to gain his son a post well behind the lines. Both Dmitri and Mikhail had successfully fought to negate that. When the Emperor asked his brother to form the new elite Emperor’s Hand, Dmitri had been one of his first selections for the officers’ corps. After Nicholas died and Mikhail ascended the throne, Dmitri had become his eyes and ears in the Army and had quickly risen through the ranks. He had led troops in both Azerbaijan and Pontus, proving himself an able commander time and time again. He had been given command of the Russian Expeditionary Force in Abyssinia, the failing of which was the single glaring black mark on his otherwise impeccable record. As both men had gotten older, the Emperor had come to rely on Dmitri more and more.

“I have a mission for you, nephew” the Emperor said, finally breaking the silence. “You shall go to Poland and take command of the Second Army. There you will begin preparations for war. The time is at hand for us to leave the shadows of other nations and take our rightful place on the world stage”

Dmitri turned his head ever so slightly to his right to look at the Emperor, but his face was hidden by the heavy cowl of his robes. “Is it time, my liege?”

“It is. Commence Operation Oncoming Storm”

Dmitri let out a breath he had not realized he had been holding. “At last we will reveal ourselves to Europe! At last we will have our revenge!”

Fellow South Africans. It is my melancholy duty to inform you officially that in consequence of unprovoked Russian aggression the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland has found it self at war, as a result, South Africa is also at war.

TO: Russia and the United Kingdom

We have no intention of entering our young men into a conflict between your two powers. But it is noted now, that after years of British encirclement doctrine against her own former allies, that she has not one friend remaining. Cries of Brazilian paranoia from the end of the Great War to this very day now come full circle. We are not happy with our prediction that European policies would lead to armageddon came true. But we are happy to announce that we've prepared for this day.

As of the declaration of war between your two alliances, Brazil officially declares neutrality. Our shipping travels to ports on both sides of the front, and should any of our merchants be molested a swift and vicious retaliation will follow. We double down our commitments to our allies and friends around the globe. Never forget, gentlemen, that our power is not to be underestimated and our influence not to go ignored. We have multiple areas of concern to present both parties and we demand diplomatic recognition of them.

1. The conflict in the Red Sea and the Sinai will not spill over into the Papal Holy Lands, Egypt, or Sudan. We have a fleet stationed nearby that will give no mercy to offenses to these demands. We expect the containment of Tadjouran submarine warfare in the region to ignore neutral parties.

2. Spain and Portugal are protected members of the Lisbon Pact. Any action against their sovereignty and economic well-being will bring about the full wrath of the Empire.

3. That the Treaty of Ascuncion be held and not broken by British demands. We will not tolerate a massive build up of military equipment in South America to feed a war started by Europeans for Europeans.

It is a simple matter to maintain peace, gentlemen. Toe the line.

We must consider the immediate calling of reserves to service in Europe from both Spain and Portugal. The defense of our allies is paramount. A fortified bloc is a safe bloc. We must not be caught unawares by the threats of either side in these darkest hours.

We commit to defending your neutrality and sovereignty to the fullest of our abilities.

Alert Brazilian forces in the Red Sea to protect local shipping. If any son of a b*tch gets out of line put him in the ground. The same can be said for all fleets.

Our conflict is with the British and their lackeys. We will ensure that neutral nations such as your own are not needlessly dragged into this great conflict.

Spain stands by its Lisbon Pact allies and declares neutrality.

Britain has no intention of attacking any Brazilian shipping whatsoever, of attacking any party under Brazilian protection, or of demanding any sort of repudiation of the Treaty of Asuncion.

TO: Russia, the United Kingdom, the World
FROM: Colombia

Colombia echoes the statements made by its fellow Lisbon pact members regarding neutrality and further states that with conflict erupting around the Sinai, in the interest of preserving prosperity and limiting worldwide economic collapse, the Panama canal will remain open to commercial shipping for all nations. In the interest of maintaining neutrality, the provision against using the canal by military ships currently in place for the nations involved in the North American conflict will also apply to all nations involved in this war. Warships belonging to nations at war are strictly prohibited from using the Panama canal.

Portugal reaffirms it's neutrality in accordance with the policy of the Lisbon Pact. We thank Russia and Britain for respecting the neutrality of countries not relevant to their conflict, and pray that this war will not engulf the world in chaos.

Britain asks Russia what its war aims are, and what terms they would hypothetically accept at this point in the war, or under what circumstances they would look for what kind of peace. For it seems to us that this invasion is as outrageous as it is unjustified. What world is Russia hoping to build through this act of flagrant aggression?

For it seems to us that this invasion is as outrageous as it is unjustified. What world is Russia hoping to build through this act of flagrant aggression?

Our war aims are the same that we have been saying for the past several decades: A complete and total end to British encirclement of Russia, a cessation of Proletarist aggression and subterfuge within our borders and the borders of our allies, and the removal of the threat of Proletarism to all of Europe. As your government has stated time and time again, you (as a party unaffected by their meddling) have no quarrel with the Proletarist dogs and see no need to keep those rabid beasts on a leash, causing them to terrify those around them. We meanwhile must constantly do battle with these fiends at home and abroad and we mean to cut the head off the snake, as the proverb goes.

As you have also stated time and time again, you will "allow us to take no actions" that would harm the so called stability of Europe. Thus, as we aim to end the Proletarist regime in Scandinavia and reinstall the rightful Emperor of Scandinavia back in his homeland, we must also make war on their German allies and your own nation, for your continued support of an unlawful regime that sows chaos, destruction and misery across the globe. Forswear your support of the Proletarist usurpers in Scandinavia and their German allies, cease to support dissenting factions in our nations, and end your flagrant encirclement of our great nation and there can be peace between us.

Denmark wishes to inform the world that it is declaring neutrality in the current conflict. The Skaggerak will be open to domestic shipping of both powers, though we demand that the Skaggerak not be used as a battlefield by any of the conflicting powers.

We are willing to enforce the demilitarisation of the Skaggerak by force if need be.

We expect the Worker's Commonwealth of Scandinavia to respect this decision to demilitarise the Skaggerak and enforce the neutrality of the Skaggerak, as it signed in the previous decades.

OOC: ORDERS FOR EQ:
Spoiler :

The military is placed on super high alert in response to possible Scandinavian or German invasions. The navy is deployed around Copenhagen and the Skaggerak in case a hostile force attempts attack, while the army is deployed around Copenhagen as well as to the German-Danish border in case any of them try any funny business.

Is Denmark saying that belligerent warships are not allowed to pass through the Skaggerak, or that belligerent warships are not allowed to open fire in the Skaggerak?

Is Denmark saying that belligerent warships are not allowed to pass through the Skaggerak, or that belligerent warships are not allowed to open fire in the Skaggerak?

Belligerent warships are not allowed to open fire in the Skaggerak.

On top of that, nor are they attempted to embargo or forbid the passage of civilian vessels through the Skaggerak, in accordance with the agreement with Scandinavia signed in 192X.
