Capto Iugulum Background Thread

I thought doing something like this as rough estimates would be interesting to someone besides myself:

OTL-CI Rough Population Comparisons

Brazil 1938 CI: 88,344,000
Brazil 1939 OTL: 40,289,000

United States, Jacksonia, Florida, UPRA 1938 CI: 127,872,000
United States 1939 OTL: 131,028,000

Vinland 1938 CI: 40,635,000
Canada 1939 OTL: 11,267,000

Spain 1938 CI: 21,411,000
Spain 1939 OTL: 25,637,000

Scandinavia 1938 CI: 25,083,000
Scandinavia 1939 OTL: 12,986,000

Italy 1938 CI: 39,906,000
Italy 1939 OTL: 44,394,000

Japan 1938 CI: 83,592,000
Japan 1939 OTL*: 71,380,000

*not counting Korea

Seems legit, inasmuch as disparities in ATL and OTL populations seem to reflect greater national importance or prosperity (Scandinavia) several years/decades of civil war and internal strife (Spain, Italy, USAmerica and former states) or copious amounts of immigration (Brazil, Vinland).

Spain isn't really a fair comparison because CI Spain doesn't include Catalonia, Euskadi, and Galicia. You probably ought to include those if you want to make a meaningful comparison re: Spain.

Also, how are you calculating these? Because every time I try to do the standard recommended (take MP and multiply by 9000) population calculations I get numbers far below what they should be.

MP x 3 x 3 x 3000 is what EQ told me to use, and it works out pretty well.

@LOE, yeah, only I don't see how the United States had such a large immigrant population to be above OTL USA before the millions of deaths and refugees. They were a dictatorship and slave drivers for most of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Even if you compare the Russia in CI to OTL, it has roughly 50-100 million more people than the Soviets and Poles combined in 1939. So, some things are wonky but on average things work out to show trends in this timeline.

So, Chokweland, according to Lucky's method of calculation has 4,185,000 people.

It seems a bit low, considering that Chokweland is one of Africa's largest countries.

It's likely there was still immigration to the USA because the dictatorship was not the most oppressive there has ever been (not counting slavery). In the West, in particular, it could basically be ignored. Thus folks probably would still see the USA as an appealing place to immigrate, although it isn't the most appealing.

Answer: Slave Breeding Pits/Plantations. Your male slave acting up? Send him to the local Slave Breeding Pit and he'll be back with a smile on his face. A weird smile to be sure, and you gotta keep him a safe distance from your wife, but at least he isn't scowling all the time.

D:

No Russia? I'm disappointed

As for the US, the reason for the slightly higher population (prior to recent losses) is because of a longer lasting and substantially larger slave trade.

V1 is the most appropriate comparison.

Hmm. I've typically placed Vinland's population around half of that. My last Vinlandic fact sheet places us just shy of 19 million. Is 40 million a more reasonable value? That's not impossibly large, but it's still larger than Canada's population today. :p

Yeah, there's no way they're not importing food. Even continue historical trends of Russian agricultural development, bumping up productivity 20% to match a farmer in Kansas for the hell of it, I'd be surprised if they fed themselves.

Not only am I not importing, I'm the largest exporter of agricultural goods in the world

I'd like to hear some more info about this. What kind of crop yields does Russia see (yield per hectare) compared to other industrialized nations, and what kinds of protections does it have? What industrial policies does it pursue?

The biggest problem with serfdom (economically speaking) is abysmally low crop yields and if you have surmounted this problem, that would bode extremely well for your country's future. You wouldn't ever have to institute political reform since the domestic situation would be effectively under wraps.
