I just thought of a fourth Key Tenet of Capto Iugulum.
4. Even if you win, you're probably not going to live to enjoy it.
Think about it. America: won the Great War, then collapsed under its own weight and its co-conspirators in the Great War turned on it. Destroyed the only country which would have assisted it. Arabian Empire: won the Great War too, then stagnated for ten years before its own allies put it out of its misery. Republican Spain: won the 3rd SCW with Franco-Burgundian help, completely taken apart by the Germans not ten years later. The FBC and Holland: won the SCW as well, taken completely unprepared when the Germans and Italians actually learned something from the war and got annihilated and ceased to exist as nations. Italy: won the last European War, but war exhaustion was so bad that they lost almost all their gains right afterwards.
It really is Capto Iugulum's greatest irony.
(Actually the Greatest Irony is the fact that the United States collapsed after betraying and destroying the only ally that would have helped it, but taken together all of those are the Greatest)
