Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

Yes, there is something I can do about not going into detail about the random fluctuations. In order to keep the balance there has to be constant growth in this ruleset of the economy, but I can certainly scale down the migration patterns a bit, which will clear things up a little. Also random events such as military quality changes and baby booms can be turned into a separate section of their own which'd take a minute or two at most. Good thoughts.

As for the high price (and continuously higher) of units, that's intentional. Smaller nations SHOULD have a harder time recovering from a particularly devastating war. The current system of tech and prices will have it gradually increase throughout this whole portion of the NES. Prices will of course be adjusted for the arrival of total war in CIEN Part 2. For now, if you want a large standing army, it's going to cost you.

1) 19th Century is fun in and of itself, though I like to see how it will shape the 20th century.

2) Rules are fine

3) A bit wordy, but I like the detail you put into it

1) The 19th century is great.

2) The rules are good.

3) I love the updates from a player perspective, but maybe as a mod you can be more brief in your descriptions. As mentioned a lot of the more minor events, such as baby booms, can jsut be heaped into one "stat changes overview" section. In addition any changes in government/leaders could also be heaped into one section unless its a real special event like a coup or rebellion or something.

We will agree to a peace at pre-war borders

After viewing the situation, we see no choice but to exit the war and to accede to the Pope's demands.

1) The 19th century is good, I'm also looking forward to how the 20th century will play out. :D

2) They're fine.

3) They're good, but if shortening it would be easier for you that would be fine.

While we regret the deaths of the crew, we must point out that the Treaty of Nanking, which was signed openly so that other powers would adhere to it, all European trade must go through Hong Kong, and the transport of opium is illegal. We are interested in preventing such deaths from ever happening, so may we suggest that you more formally tell your merchants to travel through Hong Kong, but this time without the opium. If at the very least you make that effort, it will likely cut down some of the traffic, and we will, in turn, try to make sure that these types of incidents do not happen in the future.

Hail brothers in Christ! Our nation seeks to purchase two fifth class vessels as well as crews. Would you deign your selves to this task? We are a poor nation, so we can only offer a compensation of 2 EP per ship. What say you?

Would you also consider sending some of your brightest men to help our nation in its efforts to modernize the interior of our country and some of your generals to help our soldiers learn their trade? We are open to negotiation on this.

Sorry missed that. No, the vaccine has not been invented yet. There are some treatments, but noy the vaccine.

To all nations, and private doctors, and especially Portugal
From Paris

We are setting up a new Grand Hospital this year to cope with the smallpox epidemic. We would like to invite doctors from across the world to investigate and find a cure or preventative measure of some sort for smallpox. A smallpox epidemic in such a major city provides an unrivalled opportunity to investigate the disease. We will pay or arrange for transportation for any doctors who choose to come, and there will be prizes for doctors who come up with an effective cure.

Marvelous! You seem to predict that this dreadful disease which faded out with the coming of winter will strike AGAIN! In the name of !!Science!!

The Great Harbors of Caen and Cherburg are open for any arrivals, filled with goodies and other 'goods' for weary travelers, with the prospect of an easy ride up the Seine to Paris. Oh? Paris is too hot in the summer? Return to the beautiful beaches while you wait out that dreadful, miasma-filled, heat-stricken, and dare I say Hot-Headed, city during the summer months to continue your experiments here, and perhaps NOT return during the autumn. Facilities will also be prepared for your use.

Given how many times it's happened before, you'd have to be stupid to think that it wouldn't come again, wouldn't you?

Moreover, shut up about our lovely city. We have a bigger army and fleet than you.

Normandy

Of course, but asking for it is still ASKING FOR IT.

Nice city, contains large barracks. Not much else.

On a more formal note; your strange actions, Young King of Paris, have sown the great malcontent among your people. Hopefully wisdom comes swift enough to beat sense into you, as it probably can't beat you senseless since you are so in the first place.

Moderator Talking Points:

As ya'll have been quiet so far (relatively), let's talk NES, and I value all of your opinions and thoughts on these issues. We are five updates in, so let's just take a look at how things stand. Frankly, the more of you that speak up, the happier we'll all be in the long run. Feel free to spoiler if you are concerned about revealing your grand plan. I'll also take statements over AIM or PM. So, a bit of a question and answer style poll here, remember, if you don't speak up you might regret:

1. Are you actually interested in the 19th century for its own events or simply viewing this as the time to prepare for the 20th?

2. How are the rules in their current form working for you, and is there any clarifications that could be made?

3. Simply: The size of the updates. Too much, too little (unlikely), or just right? If too much, what could be cut down?

@Agent 89: Indeed you should. Corrected in my stats and will be present with the next update.

OOC:.
1. The 19th century is always interesting and I think the way we develop this century will ultimately make the 20th century more interesting.

2. I think the rules are quite good. I think the costs of armies are good for now provided it does change as technology etc continues to develop.

3. I quite like the size of the updates and don't see too much of a problem with it unless it's a problem for you. One possible change I could think of would be to remove immigration from the update itself and instead include this under the stats of each country. The US for example would have "Manpower: 764 (+8) (+5)". The first set of brackets represents natural growth/decline due to births and deaths etc while the second set represents immigration growth/decline. Of course major immigration spikes would still warrant mention in the updates. Ultimately it would achieve the same thing as now though so probably not a big deal.

I'm making this official: I am switching to Argentina, and don't think I'll be trading for another nation after this.

1: Personally, I find 20th century to be more fun than the 19th century, but the way you have the 19th century playing out seems to be enjoyable enough. I like the fact that we can still design units.

2: I'm concerned about the proliferation of techs, but other than that, no complaints.

3: I do think the length of the updates is slightly an issue, but we'll see after the end of the Second Venetian War.

The Treaty of Rotterdam

1. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Republic of the Netherlands hereby enter an alliance of mutual defense and protection for both nations.
2. Both nations promise to respect each others respective spheres of influence.
3. British ships will be given access to Dutch ports, and vice versa.
4. New amendments can be added at a later date upon agreement of both parties.

From Venezuela
To New Granada
CC Brazil

We stand by our originally offered treaty. To pay menaingful reparations would cost New Granada for generations and the simpler way would be for land concessions in lieu of actual payment to offset the loss of life, material, and to regain the safety of Venezuela that New Granada has cost us.

We do not want to annex your entire nation, we do not seek unfair compensation, but you seek to belittle our losses with you pittance offers of reparations which wouldn't even cover the first treacherous assault's losses in Venezuela.

If you make us press this we will crush you. We do not seek to, but New Granada refused the first peace offer with an insult, refused the second offer and lost more ground again, and now we repeat the second offer which our neighbor Brazil has agreed is a fair offer. If the conflict continues it is the result of New Granadan refusal to recompense Venezuela for their actions.
