Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

To Switzerland
From Austria:
We would be willing to discuss a status quo antebellum, provided you also agree to not allow military access to Milan, etc al.

ooc: How did my economy go from 84 to 60?

@warman: I believe a good chunk of it was the Croatian coast.

EDIT: Apologies, it should be 70 not 60. Typo there.

To: The Papal States
From: The Two Sicilies

Our armies have been shattered and your armies hold our lands. We are willing to come to terms. We would hope however to keep most of the territorial integrity of our nation in tact and offer a counter of payment in compensation for either maintaining the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies as whole or keeping Malta.

If this cannot be arranged we ultimately see no choice and will accept the terms presented to us.

We cannot speak on behalf of our Tuscan allies and so point 3 will need to be accepted or denied by them.

OOC: Upon the conclusion of this peace agreement I will be switching to the Mamluk Caliphate. When they originally became free I mentioned to EQ that I would like to take them over if they were still NPC by the time the war had finished regardless of the outcome(so this is not just because the war was lost :p).

If EQ feels that I shouldn't take part of the peace negotiations because of a possible conflict of interest he can choose to accept or decline the peace offered by the Papal States(given that this is between NPCs it will be much faster anyway ;)).

Obviously if EQ has changed his mind and does not wish for me to make this move then I shall continue on as the Two Sicilies or Naples depending on the peace terms.

From: Papal States

No compensation is enough to secure our boundaries as territorial dismemberment would. Our terms stand. The Tuscans can make a peace separately.

Very well we accept your terms. Peace it shall be.

OOC: From this point on I am now the Mamluk Caliphate.

Declaration to the Republic of the Netherlands

The institution known as the slave trade is officially banned in the Republic of the Netherlands, the following steps will be taken to ensure it is a smooth transaction;

  1. The Slave Trade is hereby declared illegal in all lands, colonial or otherwise owned by the Republic.
  2. Any person engaging in this practice will have a trial held, and if found guilty the appropriate prison time and fines will be incurred upon them.
  3. Every current slave owner will be completely and fully compensated for their loss and given the appropriate amount of money.
  4. The Dutch colonies which depend on the slave trade for income will be given compensation as well to make up for their losses.
  5. The above declaration will take roughly five (5) years to complete, by the end of that period every slave will be given freedom in our Republic

Signed Adam Mappa, Stadtholder of the Republic of the Netherlands.

ooc: yes I basically copy pasted the Spanish decree to end slavery. :mischief:

To: Kingdom of Two Sicilies
From: Empire of Holy Spain

Your bowing out of this war is the first sensible thing the ones that declared war on the Papal States have done since.

To: Tuscany
From: Empire of Holy Spain

We suggest you accept the offer of the Papal States.

To: Austria, Milan, Savoy, Switzerland
From: Empire of Holy Spain

Once more, we ask that you cease your part of the war. While we fight amongst ourselves, south of the Mediterranean the Mamluks are slowly gaining strength, and it will be but a matter of time until they once more attack us. We suggest that you go for the plan we presented before, that is, Austria frees a part of Venice and retains a corridor to the Mediterranean sea.

To: so-called United States of New Spain
From: Empire of Holy Spain

We demand that you surrender right now. Your continuous defiance of the Crown is not doing you any good. The sooner you drop your arms and return to the fold of the Empire, the more lenient the Emperor will be with you.

To: Maratha Confederacy
From: Empire of Holy Spain

The fact that Jai Singh III willingly left the Confederacy to join the Empire tells us that maybe your control over your lands is not as good as you claim. If you wish to recover the lands, you'd better take this up with Jai Singh III. Of course, any attempt to invade our lands will result in a declaration of war against you.

To: Chinese Empire, United Kingdom
From: Empire of Holy Spain

While we understand that our people were committing a crime, the fact that you executed them is not well accepted. You should have returned them to us and just destroyed the forbidden cargo. While we had told people in an non-informal way to stop travelling to China with opium, it is obvious that we will have to establish laws to prevent this from happening again. Also, we would like the ships returned, so that their owners or their owners' families may have them back to continue with their trading efforts.

Nice update, but I should still have an additional cavalry and artillery brigade.

Moderator Talking Points:

As ya'll have been quiet so far (relatively), let's talk NES, and I value all of your opinions and thoughts on these issues. We are five updates in, so let's just take a look at how things stand. Frankly, the more of you that speak up, the happier we'll all be in the long run. Feel free to spoiler if you are concerned about revealing your grand plan. I'll also take statements over AIM or PM. So, a bit of a question and answer style poll here, remember, if you don't speak up you might regret:

1. Are you actually interested in the 19th century for its own events or simply viewing this as the time to prepare for the 20th?

2. How are the rules in their current form working for you, and is there any clarifications that could be made?

3. Simply: The size of the updates. Too much, too little (unlikely), or just right? If too much, what could be cut down?

@Agent 89: Indeed you should. Corrected in my stats and will be present with the next update.

1. Former. Of course, I am mainly interested in 19th century Persia in this case, which gives it a rather different flavour.

2. They work fine.

3. I think you spend entirely too much time and too many words on minor details, like manpower fluctuations and such. If it's just fun for you, then please go on, but if it's actually a bother, I'm pretty sure that nothing would be lost from doing away with those paragraphs and just summing up the minor fluctuations later.

EQ: I agree with Das on the above points.

Has the smallpox vaccine been invented yet in this timeline?

1. The 20th century is going to be very interesting, but that's when we actually reach it. The 19th century we are building is becoming quite good right now (of course, given that I am Spain in this game, I can say it is quite good :D), and it is going to be very interesting to see how different things are going to be with an Aztec Empire still existing, the Spanish Empire still strong (more or less), a British Empire that is not hegemonic but must compete with several other empires of similar strength, France doesn't exist and then there are several other things that make this a quite cool place.
2. The rules work quite well right now. Could use with a reduction in the prices of making a new unit, but otherwise it is quite good.
3. I agree somewhat with what Das has said.

spryllino: the original system of inoculation (using the cowpox pustules) is already known, given how many times people that work with cows have gone through the cowpox due to small cuts in their skin and then become immunized against smallpox. The actual system developed by Jenner, I don't know, but I'd bet it would be developed in Portugal.

I basically agree with das regarding all three points.

1. The 19th Century is an awesome time. Colonization shifts from New World and Trade based to Political Dominance (or the attempt to).

2. They are working OK, although it would be nice if Units are a bit cheaper. Right now, a loss of anything more than five units would be like OMGBBQ for smaller nations like me, and so far all battles have a decent amount of casualties that would take YEARS to reestablish for some countries; per battle.

3. Maybe just make the Economic section the Economic/Social/Technological Section for Economics, Social (Manpower changes, large events like a group of countries emancipating in the same year), and Technologies (so we can see them all together) together.

1. I am digging the 19th century setting, its fun to play around with and we don't have fear of people nuking each other off the map over trivial arguments.

2. Rules seem to be working fine, I haven't had any issues with them right now.

3. I think the update lengths are good, I like all the reading and the detail you put into them, but if it is burning you out then go ahead and shorten things if you must, but if you're just afraid people are getting impatient for you to finish updating then don't worry about that from me, I like quality over quantity.

1. I love this time period.

2. No problems.

3. Das had a good point, I think. You should rework the approach to make it fun for you to do.

1. I like this time period. I personally feel like there is more room for growth and change.

2. No problems, but I think I agree with Terrance888 when he says we need more BBQ. I would personally like to see more spareribs in this time-line.

3. The other bring up good points. Do whats fun for you.
