Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

To Austria
From Milan

Your terms are to re-establish Venice as a City-State, our terms is to re-establish Venice as a Nation, with her western territories returned and allowing you to keep a corridor of land to connect you to the sea. Milan will also allow you to use Milanese ports in addition to Venetian ports with no tariffs to show our good faith.

To All Protestant Nations
From Milan

With the end of your war against Spain, we have reopened our ports to your merchants and reduced tariffs. Welcome to Italy.

To Austria
From Milan

Venice was never a nation by any definition of the term. It was an empire ruled by members of the Italian nation sitting in Venice controlling other Italians along with Germans, Slavs, and the assorted mix of immigrant minorities. There is no just reason for the merchants of Venice to re-establish control of their petty republic beyond the traditional borders of the city to which their former empire owes its name. The only rational argument is of power politics and the issue of future Ventian independence. To this we will make a pledge not to interefere in the foreign policies of the Venice and agree to guarantee their independence, which you are also free to do (along with signing an alliance if you wish).

We are only considering this idea solely on the basis that our ally Spain has pressed us to accept your offer. Our armies remain undefeated, and in the past year we did not sent forth our whole armed force in fear of Milanese treachery. We concede you are an honorable enemy, but be warned we will not be afraid to throw our full might against your kingdom.

To: Austria
From: The Two Sicilies

Our nations have endorsed the Spanish proposal for peace which will allow Austria access to the sea as well as expanding its general territory. We feel that this would be quite a gain for Austria given the current circumstances. Austria claims that only a city state of Venice should be reinstated because there is no reason for an expanded Venetian nation to exist however such a nation had previously existed for hundreds of years in various forms.

In fact going by Austrian logic there is really no reason for this land to be Austrian and instead dotted throughout the country side small independent city states be created to ensure self rule of these lands. Such a situation would be rather foolish.

To The Kingdom of Two Sicilies
From The Kingdom of Austria:

There is indeed reason for this land to remain Austrian. While we hold no historical claim for the former western portion of the Venetian empire, we do have the right of conquest. The Venetians were defeated on the field of battle, and we were not. This land is rightfully ours by conquest. The Venetians no longer hold any rightful claim to this land. Their pretensions of a maritime empire mirroring ancient Athens is at an end. Do not pretend that your claim as king descends rightfully from the title of conquest millennium ago after the fall of the Roman Empire and the decent of Christendom into the dark ages. Or that the current lands of Two Sicilies held under fielty to your crown is not a direct result of the martial conquest of those lands either recently or in the past. Regardless Austrian ownership of these lands is now a fait accompli and we will not give it up without just compensation or defeat on the battlefield.

Speaking of which we have yet to be defeated on the field of battle. We have staved off attacks on Rome and have pressed into Switzerland. Most of our army has remained at home preparing for the eventual conflict with Milan which shall soon be met. Should your armies win the campaign we will agree to your demands, however Austria has strong faith in his armies which should soon prove victorious on the battlefield.

To World
From Switzerland

We hope the rest of the world is reading the message that Austria is sending. Milan, Two Sicilies and ourselves have extended the olive branch to Austria and it was batted away. Spain, one of the largest and most powerful nations in the world, similarly offered a peace plan that gave both sides what they wanted and Austria again said no. We fight now only because Austria single-handedly refuses to promote peace in Europe.

To Austrai
From Switzerland

You claim that might equals right and that you will not come to the peace table until you are beaten. So be it. Don't say later that we didn't give you a chance to end this peaceably.

CC: Switzerland, Two Sicilies, Bavaria, Papal States, Spain

We endorse the solution brought forth by the diplomats and ambassadors of Spain, and continue to condemn the unprovoked aggression and continually unacceptable attitude of the Austrian nation against its peaceful neighbors.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Madagascar

Your monarch has refused to grant us a treaty port. This is unfortunate, as we find control of territory in Madagascar essential to the health and welfare of His Majesty's colonies, and His Majesty's well-dealing merchants and businessmen, instrumental parts of the nation's economy all. Therefore, we demand you cede a port or strip of land upon which a port may be established, to the Swedish Empire forthwith. Failure to do so will force us to ensure the safety of our interests with armed conflict against your nation's person.

To: Sweden
From: Madagascar

You make cogent arguments and we would like to have some extra time to consider your request and take council of the variety of tribes among our people.

For everyone else this is the final and 12-hour warning

We are going to second Millan's action (after this coming update). We may think the protestant faith is rubbish but we realize that your people worship and value christ as much as us Catholics do. With that said, christians killing christians in the name of Jesus is far worse a crime than disagreements over doctrine.

Gods... Austria, why didn't you accept the treaty? I don't wanna get into a war in Europe...

ooc: there is no IC reason for me to let go of those lands barring a military crushing defeat. Sorry.

From: Portugal
To: Autria

Portugal agrees with your claim to those lands seeing as you have won them unquestionably and Portugal supports Austria in this war.

No more order revisions will be accepted beyond this point, I will still be taking new orders for the time being. New orders will likely still be accepted for another day, as I still have work tomorrow and can't be up all night updating. Not missing very many, so you stragglers, get them in!

Two important notes:

You can call a nation, but if you don't send orders, it doesn't really count.

The following are those who still can send in orders:

Eltain
Polish Ghetto
Cannae
Jason the King
TheLizardKing
das
Dreadnought
kentharu

From: Swedish Empire
To: Portugal

We are disappointed by this declaration of support for the unlawful war by Austria against Venice, and its would-be liberators, Switzerland and the Two Sicilies.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Burgundy

We are also disappointed that Burgundy has chosen to side with the unlawful Austrian aggressor. We had hoped to have more cordial relations with you, and that you would distance yourself from the unruly and unjust activities of your fellow Catholics in Austria. That said, we continue to support a peaceful resolution.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Madagascar

You have until the end of the year. At which point, coastal land will be turned over to His Majesty, or if needs be we shall take it.

From: Portugal
To: The Swedish Empire

Why shouldn't we support our allies when Sweden couldn't even reply to our request for trade routes and ensure a long lasting peace and possible friendship after the war with Spain ended? Sweden only seems to take interest into what we do when it's something that Sweden doesn't agree with us.

From: Swedish Empire
To: Portugal

You have just ended a war with us. Being that as it may, we are happy to reach accord on trade and commerce with you. If your goals are as noble as you exhort them to be, His Majesty's embassy in Lisbon remains open for such a purpose.

OOC: Psst, you wouldn't have a permanent diplomatic mission with a nation you just finished a war against, especially not without their permission. There was no Congress of Vienna.
