Capto Iugulum

From The Nation of Brandenburg
To The Republic of Pomerania

We wholeheartedly congratulate you upon the adoption of your new government. We are pleased to see that the German people will at last hold power in their nation, and will be looking forward to very beneficial relations between our two nations.

It comes at this time that the nation of Brandenburg has its own announcement: I, King Charles Fredrick II, have heard the will of the people. The nation of Brandenburg will be adopting a new constitution this year that will protect the ancient rights of the German people. Brandenburg will ensure that the intellectual and scientific progress of the German people will go unhindered, and with this, we hope that German liberty may be a shining beacon throughout the world.

Considering that Naples funded the Sicilians as they rebelled against Spanish authority, we do say that we have a very good foundation upon which to state what is "Spanish interests". Once more, we point out the fact that we only placed our veto when Sicily decided to join with Naples, an act that will clearly affect Spanish interests in Sicily.

We ask you to please drop your offer to Sicily. It is a breaking of the terms upon which Sicily gained its independence. Unless Naples is willing to accept the terms by which Sicily became an independent nation, we will continue opposing this.

We would like to remind you that, by becoming one with Naples, you are not only breaking the term which states that Spain can veto any foreign relationship decision taken by Sicily if it might affect Spanish interests, but that you are also breaking the term upon which you accepted to drop all tariffs for Spanish products. Unless the possible union of Naples and Sicily accepts both terms, Sicily must, by treaty, relinquish its sovereignty to the Government of Spain.

By that logic, you may as well call the entire nation of Sicily an affront to Spanish interests and subjugate them once more.

We wish to ask the United Kingdom to stop twisting our words in order to turn them into what they want others to think, instead of what is the actual truth.

Please, enlighten us, how is this against the interests of Spain? Spain will still be receiving the payments it was promised. Sicily is not part of Spain so why can it not join Naples? In Sicily joining Naples we will be able to pay Spain even easier and quicker.

There was no twisting of words. You claimed that Sicily's unification with Naples, a nation that - allegedly - consorted with the Sicilian rebels that threw out the Spanish rulership of the island, was a danger to Spanish interests by virtue of being a unification with those who aided the destabilization of Spanish interests.

Now, if that were the case, would not anything Sicily did with anyone violate Spanish interests due to that deal intrinsically involving the Sicilians, to whom a vast majority of the responsibility for the Sicilian revolution goes? And in that case, is not Sicily - by virtue of its very existence - an affront to Spanish interests?

We are eager to have this explained to us as we are quite honestly baffled.

As we have stated not once, not twice, but thrice and more, this proposed union between Sicily and Naples is clearly against the interests of Spain. Are you willing to respect all Spaniard people's properties in Sicily? Are you willing to keep the tariff level Sicily agreed to for all Spanish products?

If the answer to any of those is "no", then it is clear that the unification is against Spanish interests. Not to mention, the potential destabilization that may ensue from it.

What you did was indeed a twisting of words. Both that and your apparent unwillingness to see what is clear, is why we are issuing this explanation.

We accept Sicily's independence. However, this was with the proviso that they did not engage in any deal that would harm Spanish interests in Spain. Joining with other nation that has previously acted against Spain is one clear violation of Spanish interests. Not to mention that, unless Naples were to accept the same terms upon which Sicily gained its independence, it would be another violation of the peace treaty between Sicily and Spain. We also wish to point out that Sicily knew and accepted that violations of the treaty meant immediate surrender of suzerainty to Spain.

Would it be possible to split this into two payments with us recieving the plans after the second payment? I would propose two payments of 20 EP each over two years.

You don't seem to understand. As per your communique:

Spain said:
Joining with other nation that has previously acted against Spain is one clear violation of Spanish interests.

If that is the reasoning (and, literally, this reasoning is sufficiently broad so as to deny Sicily the right to consort with virtually any nation on Earth), then Sicily is always violating Spanish interests by being a nation that has acted against Spain in the past.

With a heavy heart, I have decided to agree to the demands made by the strikers. I hereby abdicate the throne, and turn over power to the Parliament, allowing them to act as a full legislative body until a new constitution can be established. They have agreed to my conditions of respecting Scandinavian settlers and property rights in Pomerania, while establishing a new government of the people, who I have done nothing but strove to protect. I will remain as an adviser to the government for the time being, until a Pomeranian republic is formed.

We officially recognize your government, and hope to maintain cordial relations. Our commitment remains to Pomerania's sovereignty, and the right of its citizens to maintain their way of life, uninterrupted by the diplomatic spats of Europe's nations. As we have pledged to the international community, we pledge to the citizens of Pomerania, that those individuals who conspired to dirty our name in a reckless demonstration of blind nationalism, will be expunged from our foreign office.

We would, please, ask you to stop twisting our words, and learn. to. read. We have said many times that we did not complain at all when Sicily chose to ally with the Kingdom of Milan or the Kingdom of Naples, or when Sicily chose to reduce tariffs for Neapolitan products, and we had no reason to complain. It is now, that Sicily has asked to join other nation, that we have chosen to exercise our power, given to us by the Sicilian people, to veto any deal related with foreign relationships made by the Sicilian government.

Would it also be too much to ask of you that the one in charge of reading the messages to actually read those messages, and not distort words and facts?

For this vicious insult to all those men that died defending freedom whilst the Spanish navy burned our fleet, sacked our coast and stabbed democracy in the heart with a poisoned blade, Brazil will be sending a fleet to the Mediterranean Sea and hereby offers Sicily and Naples full military support on matters of their sovereignty.

We send you our deepest condolences for this unthinkable tragedy which has occurred to Europe's greatest city, and we wish you the best luck in rebuilding. If there is anything Flanders can do then you may ask it of us. We also ask with the greatest sensitivity if a research team from Flanders may go to the site to reach a greater understanding of what has happened on this horrible day and to learn more about the cosmos from which this tragedy has come.

We again cordially invite any nation wishing to participate to join in the efforts of the International Office of Health to which participating nations can send reports of disease outbreak to aid in the coordination of the tracking and control of infectious disease. All participating nations can request the latest information on the locations of outbreaks and the best predictions Flemish scientists, and those scientists whom other nations will hopefully send, can make about the future track of the disease. This information will hopefully help nations to more efficiently quarantine infected populations and to know whether or not a ship is coming from an infected port.

We do not believe our actions to be excessive. Furthermore, we are not intimidated by you and will show the world that one empire cannot hold back the will of the people. Free men voted for union, Free men will defend their right to do so. Our fleet will be dispatched to the region, and during our stay in the sea we will be sending relief aid to the Roman Empire. Should, at anytime during our stay, the Spanish take action against the Neapolitan or Sicilian nations our fleet will be ready to defend them.
