Capto Iugulum

After discussing with spryllino, I have decided that Conscript Brigades can be converted to Infantry Brigades by paying the difference between the two for your relative doctrine. Based on this, Conscript Brigades will NOT automatically disband once you are out of a war, however, the existence of Conscript Brigades will make your people unhappy, so tread carefully. Conscript Brigades will still only be recruitable during a war.

These changes will be made to the front page with the next update.

New Study Confirms Late Diplomatic Trends

In a surprising discovery, researchers at the University of Berlin have confirmed the late diplomatic trends of going against Spanish interests is not the cause of "idiocy" but rather for other nations having interests going against those of Spain. Head Researcher Hans Zuttenberg explained

"At first when I had heard that our King had gone against Spain, I was shocked! I feared our King had suffered a bout of insanity. It turned out that Spain could offer Brandenburg literally nothing, while the United Kingdom could offer incentives. Furthermore it seems that many are put off by the hostile and arrogant nature of the Spanish diplomatic corps."

It indeed seemed that way, as Spanish diplomats continued to have no memory of past atrocities committed by their regime, when they approached Brazil on purportedly friendly terms, seeming to forget how they burned the Brazilian coast a few decades ago.

A further study shows how Spain seems naive in their diplomacy in their expectations in allies. In the War of the American Presidency, Spain did support the Scott government but shortsightedly required the remainder of Aztec territory that had been promised to the American nation. When the Great War did occur, Spain felt betrayed, something that shocked diplomats for Spain had once again shortsightedly cancelled the defensive pact with the United States, and seemed horrified when the United States aided the British, who had been courting the Americans, instead of the Spanish, who had ended their treaty of alliance.

With the breaking of the idiocy myth surrounding diplomacy, investigators wondered if those who wanted independence from Spain really were "idiots", or if there was more to these independence movements. Spain had long declared Cuba "a part of Spain", however when 1,000 Cubans were polled by our investigation, only 2 declared they were Spanish. A second poll confirmed that those who replied that they were Spanish were actually born in Spain and had moved to Cuba only three years ago. When asked about why the Cubans declared independence when Spain seemed so intent on keeping the region, Jose Martinez said this “I thought Spain was alright, and was looking forward to just collecting welfare and taking naps in the middle of the day, but then I realized it’d be a lot easier to actually work, you know what I’m sayin hombre?”

Despite Spanish West Africa (0% Spanish), Spanish North Africa (23% Spanish), Spanish South Africa (0% Spanish), Spanish China (0% Spanish) and Spanish India (3% Spanish) having been conclusively proven to not be Spanish aside from the occupations that existed there, Spain refused to give them up in any peace treaty, saying that would be like giving up a part of Iberia, causing researches to believe they had been going about this the wrong way, and should approach this not with population, but with geography. Leading geographic experts poured over every map they could find on the subject, however they sadly confirmed that none of these regions were a part of Iberia geographically, or even connected for that matter.

The report concludes that despite Spanish insistence, the nations who go against Spain are in no ways idiots, and instead have benefitted greatly, while Spain is on the verge of losing the greatest war the world has ever seen.

:sarcasm:@nuke: yeah, you are SO mature :sarcasm:
1: On the matter of the American Presidency War, it was Scott's government who offered us the rest of Aztlan in exchange of supporting them.
2: Considering that Brazil got into the war with us after they declared war over an incident that was not our fault, I'd say that the 5 EP we demanded from them were very much a token demand. And while I admit that burning the coast was not a good idea, I was trying to wipe out the Brazilian Navy.
3: America had, until just two years before the war started, been an Spanish ally. They had declared war on the UK and Brazil, before choosing to change sides in the last minute and join those who had done naught but insult them. It would have been as if Germany and A-H broke their alliance some time in the 1900s and suddenly Germany were to side with France in a war against A-H.
4: several paragraphs are repeated.

Honestly, considering the way you tend to behave, I am glad I got out of your NES. I even think I made a mistake joining it.

Occitania is willing to award honorary degrees from the most prestigious (if old) University of Toulouse to the authors and researchers of the above paper.

OOC: Milarqui, Nuke wrote a sarcastic story about your diplomatic shenanigans IC, and you respond OOC. Why not write an IC story to counter instead? IC propaganda would be rife in the early 1900s anyways.

I would also suggest you to play something that's not Iberia by any stretch of imagination in your next NES. Just to expand your paradigm.

OOC: Man, Denmark is going to have the worst dolchstosslegende. This treaty makes it look like they've been betrayed by pretty much everybody. Only upside to this, really. :p

Regarding the above couple posts by Nuke and Milarqui:

1. That is true.
3. We hadn't declared war yet. We threatened it. And then the British convinced us to change our minds.
4. That's actually exactly what happened in WWI, only it was Italy who changed sides at the last minute and joined the Entente powers against Germany.

Beginnings of a Future Leader
1905
"What are you looking at, sir?" Løjtnant Bohr asked, as Kommandør Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen looked out over the broiling seas as the Battle of Scapa Flow raged around them. Niels had never seen so many ships gathered in one place before the Battle of the English Channel, but now at Scapa Flow there was a similar number of ships crammed into an even smaller area. The effect was definitely impressive - a steel forest of guns and antennae stretched as far as the eye could see, rending the air with their deafening thunder as they discharged their ammunition. The water boiled and raged like a storm as shells missed their targets, or hit the ammunition stores of ships. Strung across the battle lines were ships slowly falling onto their ends as they sunk into the surf, and hundreds of sailors abandoned them like ants fleeing their nest. Niels had never seen anything like it in his life.
"Dying Germans." smirked Mylius-Erichsen, as he passed the binoculars on to Niels. Niels looked through them, to see several soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms desperately clinging to the wreckage of a fishing ship as an Olympus-class battleship steamed behind them. Mylius-Erichsen barked a command at one of the other Løjtnants on the bridge, who scurried off swiftly to do the Kommandor's bidding - he was noted for his short temper. "There is nothing more pleasing than a dead German, Niels. Remember that." he added, sourly.
"What about the British, sir?"
"Psh. The British are nothing compared to Germans. The British make no pretences of being a proud, Nordic race. They are merely shopkeepers, and know themselves as such. But Germans… especially the Brandenburgers, they are the worst. They are a corruption of good Nordics like Danes and Swedes and Norwegians. They're corrupted by the southerners and their effeminate ways. They've been living among Latins too long." He paused for some time, as the cannons of the HDMS Aarlsborg spat. He grinned satisfiedly as the shells hit a destroyer's magazine store, ripping it apart.
"They say that the Germans have invaded Denmark itself." Niels said. Mylius-Erichsen nodded.
"I heard over the wireless. They seek to crush the Nordics beneath their corrupted heel. They claim they deserve a united nation of Germans. Ha," he said. "We'll see to it that it'll never happen. Denmark will see to it that it will never happen."

------

The following is an excerpt from the book The Rise and Fall of Niels Bohr

… it was aboard the HDMS Aarlsborg that Bohr was acquainted with Kommandor Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, who, seeing some degree of promise in young Bohr, rapidly had him promoted up the ranks to Lojtnant. Apparently, Mylius-Erichsen saw in the boy a form of kindred spirit, or somebody who could be warped to follow Mylius-Erichsen's vicious and hostile world view - a weapon against the Germans. It is known that the Kommandor was a significant influence on the young Bohr, and later his mentor as they both entered politics, however, it is difficult to say whether Mylius-Erichsen influenced Bohr's hostility towards the Germanic ethnic group. Some scholars of 20th Century Danish history believe that though the racist and hostile influence of Mylius-Erichsen had some part in Bohr's hatred, the invasion of Denmark contributed far more, as German-hatred was endemic among soldiers who served on the front lines against Brandenburg. Others note that due to Bohr's position in the navy, he would have never seen the front lines, and that all of his hatred should have been focused on the British.

Bohr should have had some reason to have hatred of the British, Americans, and Brazilians, from early on in his military career, when he fought against them during the 1905 North Atlantic campaigns. The Battle of the English Channel was a great surprise for him, as it defined much of the naval warfare of the War at the outset, but it is believed that the Battle of Scapa Flow had a much greater effect on his psyche - Niels wrote in his diary that he had never seen so much bloodshed and war in his entire life, and would probably never see again. However, if Bohr really did harbour a pathological hatred of the British as much as he harboured one of the Brandenburgers and the Germans, then it would have come from the later Battle of the Irish Sea, where a huge portion of the Danish navy was sunk. In fact, the HDMS Aarlborg was the only Danish capital ship left functional at the end of 1905, the others having been destroyed, including the HDMS Frederick, the Conquistador-class battleship that was the pride of the Danish navy...

Regardless of where Bohr's pathological hatred of Brandenburg and the Germans in general came from, Mylius-Erichsen had considerable influence of Bohr as his mentor. Bohr followed Mylius-Erichsen into politics, helping him form his party...
---
… it was in 1906, however, that the power of the Danish Navy over Danish politics was broken. Denmark had always been very proud of its fleet, which was extremely large as compared to its size, and its sizeable battleship fleet was chief among its sources of national pride. However, throughout all of 1905, the Royal Danish Navy had only won a single battle, and a pyrrhic one at that, which had cost most of its fleet. However, the Danes managed to continue their propaganda campaign, which continued to glorify the Danish Navy despite its failings. It was in 1906 that this illusion was finally shattered, with the disastrous Irish campaign literally destroying the remaining Danish surface fleet. By the end of 1906, the only remaining ships in the Danish navy were several outdated submarines, which remained in port in Aarhus out of fear of Polish and British navies. The prized Eendrachts that had been built last year were found to be useless, and plans went forward to build more of the new Chasseur-class battlecruisers.

However, this was derailed by the coup of mid-1906. Seeing the 1906 Constitutional Crisis caused by the Brandenburger occupation of half of Denmark, and the chaos that the democratic process had caused, the leader of the Royal Danish Army, one General Lars Jensen took action. Jensen was a veteran of multiple campaigns, including many against the Khoisan in Oranjien, and was placed in charge of the Royal Danish Army by King Christian and the Social Democrats after his predecessor masterminded the disastrous offensive against Brandenburg in 1905. Seeing the constitutional crisis as detrimental to the war effort, Jensen marched his soldiers to the Parliament Building and the Palace and seized control, forcing the King to sign a document declaring a state of emergency and giving total legislative and executive power to a military committee headed by Jensen, but also including Generals Karl Asper, Edvard Kristiern, Gustav Klink and Admiral Jakob Berholdt, who headed the Royal Danish Navy. These five men were named the Quincumvirate, and all had theoretically equal power. However, the other three generals always voted in favour with Jensen, and Jakob Berholdt was largely ignored and left to run his six submarines.

The 1906 coup left a bad taste in young Niels' mouth. Niels and Mylius-Erichsen were aboard the HDMS Aarlsborg when it sunk during the Irish campaign, destroying the last battleship in the Danish navy. They successfully got off the ship, and were hauled onboard a Scandinavian destroyer and taken back to Copenhagen. There, they were present when Larsen launched the coup and seized control of the apparatus of power, and were part of the angry mob that coalesced around the Palace when Jensen seized power, only to be dispersed swiftly. In particular, Mylius-Erichsen was furious about the state of affairs. The Army, though particularly politically active until recently, was traditionally more liberal than the Navy - many in the Navy had wished that the King Christian would dissolve parliament during the crisis and write a new constitution with greater powers for the monarchy. Jensen's coup ended this dream, and the navy, and in particular Mylius-Erichsen and his protege Bohr, were particularly furious about this state of events.

On behalf of the Allies, we offer you a white peace at pre-war borders. No reparations nor concessions; just the status quo.

To: Persia
From: The United Kingdom of Great Britain

On behalf of the Allies, we offer you peace at pre-war borders save for a concession of 30 EP in war reparations, to be paid to the Arabian Empire.

We are only willing to agree to those terms provided that Arabia agrees to a single additional term.
1: they will set up an independent nation to oversee the holy lands. Government of said independent nation must grant peaceful access to the holy sites by all religions, though fees may be collected for such access provided they are reasonable and equal for all parties. said government will pledge to try and remain neutral in any future conflict, though there will be no enforcement of this. We do not trust Arabia to hold these holy lands. they have proven to have no respect for the integrity of these lands through their past actions, and behave hostile to all not of their sect.
we would also like them to denouncement the criminal organization "Sons of Arabia" slaying of several hundred Persian citizens within their borders a few years back, but we are not willing to press on if they refuse.

Unacceptable. The war will continue.

OOC: Milarqui, Nuke wrote a sarcastic story about your diplomatic shenanigans IC, and you respond OOC. Why not write an IC story to counter instead? IC propaganda would be rife in the early 1900s anyways.
Agreed- Milarqui, you're better than just bringing up things that are irrelevant to the current situation. Nuke wrote a clearly in-character story that makes fun of your nation- there's no shortage of IC dirt to shovel right back on him. ;)

So you wish to see your holy sites continue to be desecrated and destroyed by them. we do not care if they are allied to said independent nation. or even if said independent nation is their vassal. but we can not stand by while a nation openly hostile to us, one who has repeatedly KILLED Persian citizens peacefully trading with them (before the war).
we are willing to raise the reparations to them to 150EP (to be payed over 5 years). it is a small price to pay for peace and free access to the holy lands. but we will not budge from our honor nor morals.

To My Dear Cousin Harald,

What a pleasure it is to see your writing once again. While I have concerns about the manner in which the war has- and in some places, has not yet- concluded, I am confident that further conflicts may be resolved peacefully, by the very democratic processes that we both strive to uphold.

There has been an upsurge of good will for Scandinavia with the signing of this peace, even among the most anti-Imperial segments of Vinlandic Society. It is my hope that we may work to re-establish our ties and reaffirm the strong cultural and diplomatic connection that our nations have enjoyed ever since New Sweden was first established.

As such, I believe it would be fitting to have us each host a parallel fair celebrating our shared Nordic Culture, one in the Old Stockholm and the other in the New. I shall travel first to Scandinavia, then I invite you and your family to come and visit the glorious expanses of Vinland.

Yours,

-Ingvar

What is the absolute latest point we can send in orders? Some late diplomacy has been incoming; and my orders are fairly reliant on the outcome.
