Papal Letter on the Italian War
-
People of Italy and the world, my beloved faithful. The situation in the war has not necessarily developed to our advantage and as such certain sacrifices in our temporal interests must be made in order to guarantee into the future the sovereignty of the Church (made manifest in the Papal States) we hold so dear from secular powers.
As such we sign the Treaty of Florence to ensure the rights of the Church in Italy, and our own indepenece from hostile powers, and to ensure the slow attrition of suffering wrought against our people in conquest and occupation never comes to pass.
I implore the faithful to endure the unendurable, and stand firm in joyful hope into the future. For this temporal sacrifice may perhaps lead to spiritual blessing.
May the peace of God be with you
Pope Leo XIV
