Capto Iugulum

OOC: After looking over the last page I guess this is referring to the Pope touring Spanish-speaking nations. Argentina is indeed majority English, but there's a large Spanish-speaking minority there.

So if someone offers lots of progressive social policies, but clamps down on certain forms of free expression, what does that make them?

--- Ignore ---

Workers rights, universal enfranchisement, education and social services... but several political parties are forcefully locked down.

A left-wing dictator.

Mm, but Brazil has a functional democracy, it's just set up to be imbalanced against Proletarists of all stripes.

EQ: just so you know, I can't do my background until you've responded to the diplo I PM'd you, sorry to be impatient.

Spain between the First Republic and the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera had a functional democracy... but elections were rigged so only the two big parties could win. Pretty much the same as today, except elections aren't rigged nowadays.

So if someone offers lots of progressive social policies, but clamps down on certain forms of free expression, what does that make them?

Bismarckian.

Specifically, thinking of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sozialistengesetze, the Anti-Socialist Laws; plus Bismarck's attempts to strip members of the Social Democrats of German citizenship.

(As said Social Democrats not only survived Bismarck, but are well-positioned to build an anti-Angela Merkel coalition for next year's elections, well, we can see how well those laws worked out)

Yeah, Germany had conservatives making a lot of liberal moves to prevent the liberals from getting power. It happened in Canada too, when the centrist liberal party adopted a bunch of the socialist NDP platform (national healthcare) to prevent the NDP from making a move for dominance in parliament.

To: Kurdistan
From: Turkey

We will not take part in this "peace conference" which is merely an attempt by Kurdistan to try to negotiate away what is rightfully Turkey's. The Turkish land that Kurdistan stole has been recovered by Turkey. Kurdistan would do well to just accept the status quo, instead of prolonging their suffering through their stubbornness. There is no compromise that can be reached. Kurdistan decided this by their refusal to end the war last year.

OOC: If you mean WW1 I'd primarily blame Kaiser Wilhem, who dismissed Bismarck.

The dismissal of Bismarck was a lot more complicated than Wilhelm being a shameless warmonger who wanted a chancellor who would help him railroad a war against France and its allies :gripe:

The Kingdom of Romania

Romania.png

(Thanks Bair and cicero)

National Background

While Romania and her native Romanians have long been subject to, and resisted rule, by the Magyar, it was not until the fiery conflict known as the 'Great War' that an independent Romanian nation was created. While suffering from a numerous riots and a military coup, a coup that was quickly put down by Russian bayonets, the young kingdom has lived a relatively peaceful existence. Especially when compared ether the Romans, or Romania's former master Hungary. Perhaps, in the future the young kingdom will find itself in some ideological conflict. But, for now the Romanian Kingdom, and her Russian King live in peace.
