I'd want a dog - they aren't called man's best friend for no reason!

Cat.

Means I don't have to go outside.

In before the "I thought we already had a thread about this!" post.

Cat. I never would have said that three years ago, but our formerly stray cat has changed that.

what was your cat like?

i'm considering getting a pet, but i can't decide between cat and dog.

He's loving, loyal, always wants to be where the family is, playful, and quite humorous. He came here as a kitten though, so I can't guarantee this with other cats. Also, there is almost always someone around, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Other good things about cats: Don't have to go outside, they're quiet, they don't try to eat all the food in their bowls all at one time, they're small and light which makes them easy to carry, and they usually don't bite. (Ours likes to be rough and playfully chews on hands, though.) Oh, and they can take care of mice issues. :)

I was a "cat person" for 20 years of my adult life, up until 2008 when I got my doggie goggie. I cannot now imagine myself without her in my life. But my cats I feel the same about. So I guess I am both. My dog is more affectionate, but I acknowledge the mastery of the felines on planet earth and would never consider being without one of them as well, my just and true overlords.

Since "both" was not an option, I voted that I like polls

Both! But dogs require more space than I currently have, at least the kind of dogs I'd like.

Strictly speaking, my 700sq ft apartment is big enough for a large dog, provided we walk it twice a day. I'm just not comfortable confining a large dog here though.

Dog. I have no beef with cats in general, though I don't particularly like my cat.

It's possible that I'm biased because I have a crappy cat, and I've always had dogs. Also, I don't care for yapper-type dogs, I want a dog that can kick someone's ass. Dogs can go outside with you. Cats are generally stuck in the house, and they can't kick anyone's ass. (Except maybe a small child, but small children don't need their asses kicked.)

There have been dozens.

Dog person, but only just. Cats are pretty damn cool mang.

I am not an animal person. I get along well with both dogs and cats, I just don't have any desire to share my house with them.

However, I married an animal person. So we have two dogs and a cat, at last count. We've had as many as two of each.

Your cat sounds like a dog!
My experience of cats is that they either ignore you and don't want to interact (so what's the point?) or they interrupt you when you're busy and/or scratch and bite when feeling playful. They destroy your furniture and can't be trained easily.

Dogs are generous, loving, fun, trustworthy and a bit more effort. But since having a pet is some effort, you may as well put a bit more in to get something good out rather than go to all that effort in exchange for damaged furniture and bleeding hands.

Dogs seem to be more responsive/reactive than cats, and seem to have more explicit personality. I used to not like dogs, but then I got one. I imagine a cat would be quite good too, but I doubt it would be the same. It would be more like a moving piece of furniture or an accessory than a family member.

A pet dinosaur would kick so much more ass than a cat or dog. It turns out that velociraptors were actually a lot smaller than portrayed in Jurassic Park, so a pet raptor would be quite manageable, but a "Beware of raptor" sign on one's front yard would still be a more effective deterrent against burglars than a moat, electric fence, ADT alarm system, pit bull, and shotgun combined.

Dog.

I've had both before, but when we had kittens, they were CRAZY!!!! The dogs that we had were more gentle, but we had to sell them (my mom HATES dogs).

I have no use for pets that have pretensions far beyond what they are. A dog knows his place and also wouldn't walk over my keyboard.

What they are, my dear nucular missile, are the Lords and Masters of Time, the Universe, and all existence. In other words, your better.

I absolutely adore cats, and they know it and respond with nothing but the utmost indifference. I can't help but love them for that.
See? Kan gets it.
