Ben Carson - The pyramids were built by Joseph to store grain...

Never mind the Great Pyramid predates Joseph by a few centuries.

Chris Matthews rips Carson - "Everyone in the world knows that King Tut and the rest of them began building their pyramids from the time of their youths as way stations for deliverance after death"

The Great Pyramid predates King Tut by even more centuries, he was buried in the Valley of the Kings

Well, if Joseph existed at all, he would possibly have served Akhenaten, who was actually Tutankhamun's father. Then again, as I recall Bible history, the Pyramids were built a mere century after the Great Flood, so that was an awful lot of work for a tiny number of people.

From the current Carson talking points, I think the Pyramids were built by gay marriage and Jesus shoud have carried a gun.

Pretty sure the internal space of the Pyramids had very little internal space because the Egyptians did not yet invent roof architecture. Kinda insane when you think about the amount of manpower and resources that went into the Pyramids if it was meant to store such a small amount of grain.

Ben Carson's bizarre theory about the pyramids, explained

"My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids in order to store grain," he said. "And all the archaeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs' graves. But you know, it would have to be something awfully big, if you stop and think about it. And I don't think it would just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain."

This is totally unsupported by the historical and archaeological evidence

Despite this, Carson told CBS News on Wednesday that he still believes his idea to be true: "It's still my belief, yes."

Carson told a story that would reflect his faith — and that's where the pyramid story comes in. In the Old Testament, Joseph rises to become a top aide to an Egyptian pharaoh after being sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers. At one point, the pharaoh has a dream vision that Egypt will fall into a great famine, and Joseph advises the pharaoh to store a lot of grain — a move that eventually helps Egyptians survive.

Carson defended his views on the pyramids to reporters on Wednesday, stating, "The pyramids were made in a way that they had hermetically sealed compartments. You wouldn't need hermetically sealed compartments for a sepulcher. You would need that if you were trying to preserve grain for a long period of time."

the story of Joseph is supposedly set in the time of Egypt's Middle Kingdom, five centuries after the pyramids of Giza were built.

Because Aliens !

Carson also argued that the advanced engineering the pyramids required can be explained by divine intervention. "And various of scientists have said, 'Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that's how' — you know, it doesn't require an alien being when God is with you." (For the record, scientists do not believe that aliens taught the Egyptians how to build the pyramids.)

Because everyone knows that a giant pile of solid stone with some twisty narrow passages in it is the best way to build a warehouse.

Epic fail

Archaeologists To Ben Carson: Ancient Egyptians Wrote Down Why The Pyramids Were Built

We know what the pyramids were built for because the ancient Egyptians tell us what they were built for (see, for example, the Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts).

There will always be science deniers, there will always be people swayed by pseudoarchaeology, and there will always be people who believe what they want no matter the facts.

When I first saw this new story, I thought: hey, Ben Carson has played Civilization III!

Well Joseph was ahead of his time as evidenced by this historical documentary.

And that's how the pyramids were built!

I dunno, it was cooler?

Clearly, building the Pyramids resulted into a time and space dispersion, resulting into John Locke visiting your civilization, telling you about the social contract and other important things.

CivIII is canon. IV and V don't matter :yup:

And iirc the pyramids are a massive granary in civ1 and civ2 as well :D

One more reason to conquer Solun.

I figure there's a huge difference between misspeaking and going to lengths in explaining what you mean.

So does everyone who isn't desperately trying to make Carson out as something other than an idiot savant. Normally, "it ain't brain surgery" means something is simple. With Carson it means he knows nothing about it.

I don't know how Carson is so the following may not really apply:

It is not at all uncommon for surgeons to be quite problematic in their views/life outside of the surgery business. For example the late chief heart-surgeon in this city (and country, if not region) was quite a miserable figure with loads of annoying views. Yet he was always accepted as an amazing surgeon.

What, the Pyramids aren't free granaries in every city? My life is a lie

*sniff* An inferior production, according to some of the audience members who saw the Red Deer College Arts Centre production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I was working on the front of house crew at the time, and overheard some of them comparing our production to the Donny Osmond one they'd seen in Edmonton, and decided that ours was better. But in truth, the very best one I ever saw was Central Alberta Theatre's production, back in 1978.

It was actually this play that led me to start researching Egyptian history, since I wanted to know if there was any truth to this story. Turns out it was just one story among the rest in the Old Testament, no evidence to support it... but I did learn quite a bit and have continued on with my reading in this area.

I guess this Ben Carson person never considered the notion that the pyramids were sealed to prevent looting.
