THE HAUSA

What is Civ of the Week?

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization features full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders with slightly more unique attitudes (they're not simply a copy of another leader), a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy!

Statistics and Information for the Hausa:

Description: The Hausa are a large and affluent ethnicity living in West Africa, mainly in northern Nigeria. They are one of the largest ethnic groups in all West Africa. Originally from the east, in Sudan, they had over centuries migrated in modern-day northern Nigeria by the middle of the 1st millennium CE. Several city-states and chiefdoms were set up, and by the turn of the millennium, the Hausa were becoming an important political and economic power in the region.

By around 1200 CE, the Hausa leaders converted to Islam, and the Hausa region was fully integrated into the lucrative trans-Saharan trade. Because of their strategic location in between the savannah states of Mali, Kanem-Bornu, etc. and between the tribes of the jungles to the south, such as the Yoruba or Benin, the Hausa became one of the most economically influential in the region, competing with the more well-known Mali and Kanem-Bornu in the markets.

Even when the northern kingdoms such as Mali and Songhai fell, the Hausa still survived. However, one weakness that had always remained with the Hausa was that their various cities and chiefdoms were always divided. This was to change with the coming of Usman dan Fodio, an Islamic scholar from the Fula tribe. Although the Fula were not the same peoples as the Hausa, they were quite influenced and even assimilated into the Hausa culture anyways, similarly to the Macedonians in Ancient Greek and the Cantonese in China.

Usman dan Fodio, believing that the Hausa rulers had become corrupt, and that they also were not adhering strictly enough to the precepts of Islam, began what is known as the Fulani Jihad around the turn of the 19th century. The Jihad did more than restore a stronger religious prescence in the Hausa city-states. It united the Hausa lands for the first time in history, and even expanded the political power of the Hausa into neighborhooding regions. The state that Usman dan Fodio founded would be known as the Sokoto Caliphate, and for a hundred years, up until the turn of the 20th century, when it would be conquered by European powers, it would dominate West Africa.

The Hausa today have a powerful prescence in Nigeria. Hausa culture, especially music, has influenced that of other West African cultures and of modern Nigerian music. The Hausa language is one of the most common languages in the region, and used to some degree as a Lingua Franca. The Hausa are likely to remain a strong entity in the region for years to come.

I'm wondering why you didn't make Ekmek's Amina Zazzua leader...

Is this "project" being spearheaded by you, cybrxkhan? Just wondering if you would take suggestions. Don't want to throw salt in your game, just been itching for the "Dominican civ" in the request thread and there doesn't seem to be much interest in the idea I guess (trust me, I'm not surprised ).

Amina's a she.

I'm wondering why you didn't make Ekmek's Amina Zazzua leader...

To be honest, I was not surprised that someone asked this, as I already did see Ekmek's pretty decent LH. However, I do have a few reasons why I did not make Amina the leader:

- Firstly, I thought the LH was too caucasian, like a female Lawrence of Arabia. I am quite sure that Amina was a native Hausa, and thus would have had, well, looked less caucasian. Of course, I don't think it would have been too hard for me to reskin his LH, but I was too lazy to (I have a schedule, too), and, furthermore, I have more reasons.

- The Hausa will actually be making an appearance in my main project, World of Legends, to be replacing the Parthian civilization that was in there previously. Amina will be featuring in WoL, but instead as a LH, as a "hero" unit for the Hausa civilization.

- I chose Usman dan Fodio over Amina because I perceived him as a more famous and important leader, and also more interesting in my opinion - it is not too often we see a mere scholar rise to create one of the largest empires in the region. Amina, in my opinion, was not as interesting and vibrant a leader; the only "interesting" thing about her was that she was a queen, and I don't want to include leaders just because of their gender.

- There was also a lot more information available on Usman dan Fodio than Amina, and for convenience's sake, I chose Usman.

- Not that I didn't think Ekmek's LH was bad, either. I just thought the CivGold leaderhead, specifically the African one featured here, was more interesting.

Though this is not to say I do not like the choice of Amina; I also had a slight problem with Usman as he technically is not ethnically Hausa, but Fula (though as I stated in my OP, the Fula were pretty much Hausa anyhow). However, Amina will feature as a hero unit in WoL, so I think that does her enough justice.

Also, not that I didn't think Ekmek's wasn't bad. Amina just didn't seem to work out for me.

Hope that explains it! :D

Which "project" are you talking about? World of Legends or Civ of the Week?

If you're talking about WoL, then any civ suggestions will probably be useless at this point, as the list of civilizations to be added are pretty much finalized. If you're talking about Civ of the Week, however, I will reluctantly say that I generally do not take civilization requests, as I prefer to do civilizations I like because I dont have that much time to do everything.

If it makes you feel better, it is not too terrible difficult to make your own civilizations, and there are a few good tutorials in the forums that can probably help you out.

Ekmek made a black one.

Ekmek made a black one.

I just quickly checked that, and to my utter shock, you're right - must have slipped my mind that there were two versions. Anyhow, there's still the other reasons listed above. :D

This is such an awesome civ. Great work! I love that you pay attention to these little civs.

Thanks. The Hausa, however, are in my opinion important enough that they'll earn a place in WoL however. :D

By "little" I mean "Sid Meier didn't encounter them on his "History of Europe" book he used for the civ list." ;)

I would love to use this civ in the MechaMod... but every civ there has 2 uus, and i'm at a blank.

A Sokoto Jihadi wouldn't be too bad of an idea. Another possibility is an archer (replacing the longbowman), except with poison arrows. Archers armed with poisoned arrows were often used by the savannah empires. However, I don't know what to call these, other than "Poison Arrow Archers", which sounds kind of stupid anyhow.

when I go into BTS to play as the Hausa or the Anglo-saxans, neither of them are there. Do i have to edit something in their files?

^You'll have to make sure that you extract the zip to the right file. This file should be in something similar to this (depending on how you installed your game the folders may be different):

Program Files/Firaxis games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Beyond the Sword/Mods

Basically, make sure this thing is in the BtS mods folder first (and not the custom folder). Usually that'd solve the problem if there was one.
